What do *you* want to see from the JA?

solitude
For those who have been hiding in a hole for the last 4 years, the Jedi Knight series is dead. We will keep hosting JK3 servers for the forseeable future, but there is no denying that JK3 has run its course, and there is no JK4 on the horizon.

The Force Unleashed is not the game we have been waiting for. Holding out for JK4 would be foolish optimism at this point.

This leaves us with a problem - where do we go from here?

I'm throwing this out to the community. This will be in no way binding or indicative of what we will do, but I *do* want to gather feedback from you guys.

What do you want to see from us?

- a SWGEmu server?
- a TOR (The Old Republic) community?

Any, and all, *sensible* suggestions will be considered.

Post with your ideas and reasoning. Be as thorough as you can.

but realistically, It should be really well-planned thing before anything could actually start?

and I think nobody has time to take such a responsibility for now? not in two or three years... anyhow...

Just thought I should pop up with couple of cents from a long forgotten guy. *coughs*

As long as this community 'will' stay alive. And will most then likely due to its great members. Then as I believe most said. New stuff for the win.

So yea. Go go go TJA.

-Oy. And no Harsh comments on me. Just checked up cause I missed ya guys. So yea. I pay the drinks. Laz. Save some for us tho-

P.S. Mount and Blade Warband Multiplayer anyone? Pretty sure there will be a Star Wars Mod for that game coming out soon enough.

I should post a small clarification.

There is not a 1:1 mapping of "game servers" to "physical servers".

As it stands, there is currently *one* physical server. This single physical server runs all the game servers. This was true with the previous hosting that we had.

Running fewer game servers would not actually save anyone any money, as we are just hosting from a single dedicated box.

Hope that clears things up for anyone that was confused.

Yer thats true about css and tf2 but you never know unless you try the Academy could do lots with css like Star wars maps models ect... but if JA does i could provide some servers for css and tf2 i'm Extremely Qualified of seting up servers for css and tf2 and i would be also to provide them aswell :)

Yer we could have divisions going on here. maybe and idea

Example; The jedi academy division, the KoToR Division, Xwing, and maybe bring some other games in like Counter-Strike Source, Team Fortress 2 ect...

like try to open the community up to more games (star wars games and to all other games)

You know what I think you should do? Over the next month, meticulously monitor the servers and in particular, how much activity there is on them. Does the JA really need multiple JK3 servers? Probably not. Whoever is shelling out the money for these servers is awesome and has the gratitude of everyone, I'm sure, but is also flat out wasting their cash.

One JK3 server, that's all we need.

As for TOR, I had discussed this with DJ a couple of times. I think we could continue the "academy" role in the community by providing a place for people to meet other TOR players, be a resource for guides, walkthroughs, etc. I'd also like to see JAT's and JAK's (or equivalent in the future) guide new players through starting areas, and generally be around in whatever server (If there are indeed multiple servers in TOR) to provide assistance to JA members (and of course, non JA members who would then be stunned at how helpful you guys are and join the site!)

Just my two cents. JKA is awesome and if my computer didn't blow so hard, I'd still be playing it.

Now that we have new servers: Get online and play on them.

If you want to preserve JK3 in TJA, then hop on those servers and create activity. This will be enough to sparkle others to come back as well.

I have lived through similar scenarios quite a few times. But as long as someone is willing to be online, they will spark some interest in the rest of the community. We just need to go active on the servers, that's all.

And be it for 10 minutes, just to get in touch with the people for a little bit. Will help already.

With that said, let's get back to what we are here for: playing JK3 in a friendly and respectful atmosphere :)

cheers,

Hey!

Personally, I agree with Kaldor and Hugo, and, as a result, will not let go of JKA so fast as well, for I have played this game for several years and enjoyed it very much.

A lot of JAs are still pretty active. You can spot them here and there, confronting at Base and Ja+ servers, meeting them everywhere.

In my eyes, first of all, it is necessary to try to preserve JKA. Of course, new games can be considered. And then time will show.

BUT...have no fear FOR KENWAN IS HERE!

Seriously speaking though, I think (like everyone else) that it is an absolute crying shame that Lucasarts couldn't even create JK4. There is a HUGE fanbase out there for this game, sales would have been astronomical and furthermore, the 'extended play' on the game - i.e. 'expansion packs' etc could have added extra life to the game like they had for JK3 (this). I just cannot understand why they decided to call it a day on this series...

everything that has a beginning has an end. as far as jka is concerned, the game is nearing its end. consequently, the academy, as a place of instruction, is also coming to a close.

i for one will always have fond memories of this place regardless of whether people will stick around.

When I was a student? I didn't bother how pro-active JA.net was... I just played and I spent good times with people, who played this game...

It doesn't need to be something major, just something creative... You have servers, just do something with them... FFAing, I take it, somebody doesn't like it, then find people who want to play differently!

If I liked and enjoyed something, I just did it... within the limits of JA.net's rules, ofcourse...

and I never waited JAK+ to hold something for me if I clearly saw that they were busy with something... I never asked JAK+ work for me 24/7 because I was bored... Still as a student of JA.net, where ever I went, I proudly presented myself as a member of JA.net community... I never asked myself "What JA.net has done for me?" due to I allready respected so much this community and the people who have worked years for it... It was enough to me to be part of something, but I got so much more because I understood eventually how things worked on JA.net and I'm still wondering why other people just doesn't get it, It took few days from me to figure it out... :D

For the sake, I have been inactive for years now... But whenever I become active, I always find the people with whom I enjoy to play the JK3/JK2...

The community is old, and fantastic, but without something pro active which will go out there and grab those few active players by the balls and get them back playing, the numbers will unfortunately continue to dwindle.

There were a few people including myself who had ideas on how to increase activity in this place but at the time the ideas were quickly shelved and forgotten, which is why I stopped bothering.

I just hope something crops up soon, because there are so many people here, and it would be a shame to just all go our seperate ways.

Hugo's comments are still too black&white for my taste...He's missing some points... for example: JA.net is the oldest freaking community in whole history of JK! It is still running and finding ways to survive! This is freaking living thing which has switched generations and generations, over and over again... and We still find a new and trustworthy people to run things decently...

Question is how come it has failed? Do anybody really understand the main points of a good community? Do anybody really understand the whole aspect of JK series because there are really as much aspects as people are playing the JK games?

I understand this much, I have found my answers from JA.net... and I always bet on those who have the most experience, so I don't need to re-learn everything...

JA.net is freaking beautiful living monster... people! deal with it... because It isn't going to die...

JK3 is still fine. Of course the random gamers will leave after some time. But if you passive nabs made some time to join in like once a week for a change it will be fine. Just get over the fact that there's no newbloods for you guys to 'teach' anymore and fux around with (to feel good about yourselfs and feed your e-penis). Imo if you needed a large amount of random players to teach and chat around with, to enjoy the game and not get bored.. Then you're not a JK3 worthy player and are not loyal to this game. Just join some rpg clan or w/e then. Go play TOR, yeah create some servers. ...

Nice strawman.

Quote:
People in general will come and go. And the mainstream gamers will leave JK3. Fuxed up podhead gamers will leave bored, due to a lack of self-reflection and active thinking / the need to fight against other podheads and declare their own penisses as being GOD-like compared to everyone else, or ragequit and return. So, now actually is the time that you all should start gaming at a decent level.

JK3 gaming is well past it's peak, as the ESL scene shows.

What kind of elitist bullshit is this? This is exactly the kind of crap people spout to "feel good about themselves and feed their e-penis".

Quote:

Another strawman. JK3 servers will stay open for as long as we can support them. This doesn't stop us from supporting other games.

Either way you'll have to break through the current idle-ness. But imo introducing another game is just an escape from what you all messed up.

*shrug* If you think we messed up, that's your choice. But to deny that JK3 is a dead or dying game is stupid beyond comprehension.

Also, it would be unfair of me if I didn't defend the staff though. I completely accept we all could have done more, but there are things that we did do also that it would be unfair of me to dismiss.

In fairness we (myself included) ran loads of classes for what was very few staff ever since the purge. Ever since then we have had very few trainers and myself and the few other JATs have dedicated a lot of time to just covering the very basics but also trying to cover a good variety of them. Sometimes we managed to cover Red Stance and Blue Stance as well and we also tried to cover other saber styles and advanced saber styles but unfortunately that became harder the longer time went on and eventually we only had yellow classes again.

The answer is of course to recruit more staff. This was a hard task for a year or so and after then we were all less active. Still, we eventually started doing it more. When we realised we needed more staff to teach more classes and replace JAK, we toggled a lot of people and that was why our staff base grew significantly a while back.

The staff have always worked very hard and you couldn't appreciate the amount of trouble myself and other staff have had to deal with on the servers and in the JA in general. I've sorted out more problems than I could ever describe to you guys and you'd be surprised at some of the things that have gone on and all you guys have seen is just a peaceful server as a result of it.

The staff have always and will always work very well together and as a team to solve problems that arise in the academy and to improve it.

After we got a new staff base we didn't really get any new classes and people retired. What did happen though was the staff worked hard to bring you lots of events, from weekly events to the ones that were posted on the forums and the things that happened on the servers.

We also have tried to recruit new article writers but admittedly they always get inactive.

Yes, there's certainly much more we could have done and we certainly discussed a lot of those things for sure. But I think that with the staff activity being fairly low at times and it being difficult to change some things without an active Jedi Council, it didn't really work out as well as it could have.

Still, for much of the time there have been active Jedi Knights and Trainers on the servers and events run regularly by various of our staff past and present and we have kept the JA running, peaceful, trouble-free and taught so many people and that won't stop either.

Currently we have had Solitude and Kaelis to run the servers, DJ to run the site, Lirael to sort out the applications, Knights and Trainers playing on the servers, solitude has kept the news flowing, we've tried to keep events happening and recruit new article writers and right now we are working on a new website. Given, most of the staff have real lives and are busy and maybe the academy could do better, but all I will say is that they certainly haven't done nothing and to be honest I think that if we move to another game we'll do what we can to keep the support for JK2 and JKA while also forming a good structure whatever other game or games we decide to support as well.

There's more we could do, there's even more we should do but that is really beyond the ability of several staff members, but more than anything there is a lot we HAVE DONE to make this such a great place so I don't in any way mean to detract from that. :)

Definitely and the JA will always support it, but it's also 7 years old and there seems little likelihood of a new game. Apart from that, personally, I think that there's no real reason why the JA should not be an academy for other Star Wars games as well.

Quote:

I think it was the consequence of the purge and the bad luck we had with the server problems in 2005. What little staff were left after the inactivity it caused got busy and that was it for TJA more or less.

Quote:
And now ur stuck

Yeah I think a lot of staff have got busy or not solved the problem, and doesn't help that the JA isn't democratic.

Quote:
even calling JK3 dead ..

JK3 certainly isn't dead and there are certainly things the JA can be doing to keep itself active too.

Quote:
As said before, imo the real game only starts when it 'dies'. Then the real players should emerge.

Don't know about that. People just play games when they feel like playing them. :P I certainly haven't uninstalled the game though and still play it and have done since it was released.

Quote:
So now ask yourself what to do: change, play now and then with a smaller amount of people, open up and live.

Agree.

Quote:
Or let it die

We'll still support it, how well we support it depends what our busy, undemocratic leadership decides on!

Don't get me wrong by the way, I have full confidence that some good things will happen for the JK3 community in TJA, despite some of the staff having busy lives and it not being quite a democracy. :)

Quote:
because you feel like you need a large amount of peoples to chat around with

Again, the game will still be supported and adapted to for the fewer players, but I guess there is an element among some people at the JA that they want a bigger community with more people.

Quote:
Either way you'll have to break through the current idle-ness.

Leave that to me...

Quote:
But imo introducing another game is just an escape from what you all messed up.

I think that rather it's another chance; because it'll motivate the staff to get active again and also give us the opportunity to recruit new staff and perhaps re-evaluate our structure to get it better this time. It's easier to change things with a more active staff and the motivation of a more active community.

Also people from said new game may decide to try out this old game.

I agree with much of what you said, but I still think it would be good to teach a wider variety of Star Wars games in addition to Jedi Knight.
