Connecting to the Academy Radio station will require you to have a media player that supports streaming on Ogg Vorbis Encoding.

Some recommended players are:
Winamp - Windows
foobar2000 - Windows
Zinf - Windows/Linux
XMMS - Linux

-If you want to run JA Radio on Windows Media Player, you will need to download the Illiminable Ogg Directshow Filters. Be sure Media Player is off when you do this.-

Usually clicking on the link at the top of this comment will get you on the stream with no problems, but if that doesn't work then paste 216.234.234.202:8000 into your player's Play URL feature (on all supported players). Be sure your player supports Ogg Vorbis!

Be sure to join us in #ja-radio on Quakenet to talk to the DJs, make requests, and get information about the songs and artists. Be civil in the channel and remember if you don't like what's playing just turn off the music. Don't flame the DJs.

My player won't connect! What gives?
Make sure your firewall (software or hardware) isn't blocking port 8000. Also JA Radio doesn't transmit 24/7; there are dead times. This means you just won't hear anything and it can appear that your not connecting to the server (Winamp will even give an error even though it's connected). Run into the IRC channel and see what the status of the stream is.

I keep having to buffer the stream!
You might not have enough availble bandwidth to keep up with the stream. Try to cut back on other downloads happening. Otherwise you might not have a good enough connection to the server or just flat out don't have enough bandwidth. It's also possible that your experiancing packetloss somewhere along the way and it's disturbing your connection.

Why is there a delay between when the DJ does/says something and when I hear it?
It's the nature of the beast. He's broadcasting from his place to the server, and then the server is broadcasting to you. So through all the conversions and geography a little delay is understandable.

Can I be a DJ?
If we let every person with a few songs and a mic be a DJ, it would be chaos. So the first answer is no. However if your really feel you've got something to add to the system, send an e-mail to virtue@thejediacademy.net and explain why you'd be a good DJ for the JA.

I think JA Radio is awesome and I want to record it to send to all my friends, is this ok?
No.

No. We're serious: do NOT do this! There are legal reasons why you don't want to record an internet radio broadcast. It's bad both for you and the JA.

What about rebroadcasting JA Radio to another server? Can I do that?
Nope, please do not do that either. In fact go ahead and disconnect from JA Radio right now because you are scary. JA Radio is not to be duplicated anywhere else without permission.

I totally relate! I had to bring this quote up to the top of the comments chain once again.. I hope people REALLY have a good look at this idea.. I mean, sure Rock is the majority on most radio stations worldwide, rock is probably also the most liked genre of music in the JA.. But nevertheless, usually radios play all sort of music, I mean does it really destroy the idea of a netradio if someone would play let's say techo/electric, or maybe hiphop for 2 hours per week, having around 2-3 listeners(which is normal

) who really like it.. I mean that's still 2 more listeners who might join in on more occasions? isn't it..

I mean the radio is quiet most of the day my time, and then later on I believe the JAmericans(

) have it on and do quite good.. But GMT+2 time and the radio is quiet until around 8-9pm..

Let's just hope we can work something out..

I really would like to see the radio become much more popular. The kind of thing people tune in and listen to when they play on the JA servers for example. And maybe even we could someday go so big, we could have Roan or someone else read the news a couple of times when on-air..? But I believe that is probably never happening, since the news flow isn't that big..

Anyway, I understand that this is something that the guys running the radio have to deal with, I just hope that this post doesn't get a bad welcome. I'm sure you have given stuff like this a thought, and if you haven't then, and only then I say you should.. I like the radio as it is, and if you don't want to change it then fine by me.. I'm not complaining, just trying to be a part of this in any way possible, even just as the idea-dummy..

Some good news: for those of you who are complaining that streaming the music while playing the game lags you, I have a solution. Today I'm changing the server over from the old mp3 format to the new and very cool Ogg Vorbis format. What does this mean? Well it means that you'll get about the same (high) quality, but we'll use much less of your bandwidth (half of what was before in some cases)! This is also great for DJs who live in areas where their upload rates to the server are limited. So yay!

Thank you Atarius for youre negativity and stepping on the efforts and accomplishments of others. As I often say in my irc chan, "You don't like it, GTFO." No one makes you listen it to or visit the chan. If you have constructive criticism then I'm sure they'd be happy to take input but if you just want to complain go do it somewhere else.

And no, I don't think "Waaaa they banned me" or "You didn't take my advice" is constructive.

Kinda lame imo actually.. I join the channel, finally thought something I could be organizing or even helping since I've been DJ:ing onthe 2 biggest netradios in Finland.. I get excited, just to be put down by someone who doesn't think people can have ideas, just straight forward "leave it to the people organizing it" sure ok, but I can't even discuss in the channel about anything? geez.. what kind of uptight place is this again?
