JA Radio - we need your input!

Ok, first off, a few things that are going on right now:

- We are in the process of recruiting more DJs.
- An "on-air" notifier type thing is being worked on and will hopefully be worked into the site with DJ_Sith's blessings.
- A formal schedule is being worked on and will be released once we have more DJs and everything is worked out.
- A temporary and tentative schedule of shows is up here.

Now, since we are trying to make this a "by the students, for the students" kind of thing, we need your help. Tell us what you would want to see from us. What would be cool to have? What are we doing wrong? Any suggestions/comments/remarks are welcome.

More specifically, tell us what you would like to hear on JA-radio, when you would like to hear it, and how often. In addition, any ideas you may have that may help us in any way. Anything really.

Open discussion. No ideas are too dumb or too complicated. Let's hear it.

You're right on the money Cas.

My original plan for JA Radio was to create a site exactly as you described at radio.thejediacademy.net. It was to have the DJs, the shows, a schedule that is updatable by the DJs so it becomes a system that runs itself. Also I was going to use the SQL integration of our broadcasting software to allow people to make requests through the website, and it would show up in our software.

The only problem is I don't have the ability to upload things to the webserver anymore. So someone else is gonna have to pick up this torch and run with it. It's going to require backing of a JAC and a considerable amount of his time.

I was thinking about this whole JA Radio thing.

How hard (read: time-consuming) would it be to create an "official" website for the radio?

Things included could be the regular DJ profiles, which would include some sort of info on what they like to play etc. In addition to this, there could be a separate section for the shows themselves, since some DJs host more than one. Also, this website could contain an updatable schedule, in which each DJ could update their info, thus requiring some sort of login sequence.

The thing with JA Radio, IMO, at the moment is that though being a great concept, it needs a LOT of organising. An official schedule is being made, and that's a good start, but I think the scope should be enlargened, for example via the website I'm talking about. This way, listeners could have easy access to the schedule and DJ profiles, which in my opinion are the bare rudiments of any radio station.

Also, this would dispel some of the chaos surrounding the radio at the moment, since right now it's consists basically of shows (Which is good) and during the no-show periods its a bunch of people playing through their playlists in an irrational manner (Which is bad, and to which I also must admit subscribing).

How about it?

For those of you who want to be DJs, there is no real official way to apply yet other than e-mailing Virtue, but this is my suggestion to you.

Write an e-mail to Virtue and in it describe these things:

A. Why you want to be a JA DJ (short paragraph).
B. Any experience you have with DJ'ing.
C. How much music (attaching your entire playlist would be nice - winamp has a feature that turns it into an html document).
D. What kind of content you would offer.

You also want to have mIRC, be active in the chatroom, and also be active in Teamspeak.

Once again not the 'official' application process, but if I was writing him I'd include that info.

I think someone should play some Dragonforce , Metallica, I also think decade shows would be good like 80s rock etc. would be good. I also think more talking through skype etc. would be good one night i was listeing late and motrec and ozcozz and a couple of other were just talking and it was very funny.
But i think the best thing to do would to have like a comedy hour with stand up and funny songs etc. that would be GREAT

Considering our community is based off Star Wars, we could hear some great John Williams music, here and there. Classical music in small doses is good too. :)

Don't emphasize on heavy metal and rock only.
Also do other styles of music, like R&B, Blues, Jazz you know...
Here in Holland we have some really awesome radio DJ's (commercial), they do things like telephone terror. Just go call a random person and mess with their minds... :P :empire:

I think it's moving in that direction. Virue is adding DJs that have other tastes in music to help diversify the radio. And some of us are doing special format shows like comedy and such.

As for telephone pranks, we'll have to think of some way to apply it to the JA. I don't think me just calling up random folks around here is gonna fly :P.

hmmm to say something more...
i think djs after 3 or 4 songs should say something like...
if you turned radio on only now im aaaaa
and you are listening to ja radio. (or something like that).
aaaaa - djs name.

ofcourse depends on djs style but still i think telling everyone whos is dj at that moment more often would be useful ;)

radio volume. sometimes volume is just too high :/ i remember when there was chat with virtue, roan , mo and *cough* granny ...
all of speakers had different volume...
roan speakin silently (volume up) and ROAR
virtue is speaking load and clear (volume down).

That was because Virtue was broadcasting his conversation on Skype. It was being fed through his speakers back into his microphone. Very amateurish and improvised. :P Should be better when we do it officially.
