JA Demo released -doobie - Sep 06 02:52am

I'm not sure if this is SUPPOSED to be out yet, but it is... head on over to AOL's download center (AOL, bleh), and get the new Jedi Academy Demo. I haven't tried it yet, so check the comments for this news post for people to explain what's in the demo. The next phase in the Jedi Academy's history is almost here!

This is my first post and I look forward to joining everyone with JA!

Am I the only one that loves Dual Sabers? With one Green and a blue in my hands let the games begin. I'm getting great starting a duel with with one lit (middle mouse button) and in mid-battle hitting the stance change (middle mouse button) finishing with the spinning move (W+Space+Mouse1).

Also running up walls and grabbing and leaping off them, WOW. It is fun to jump from column to column in the Jedi Tomb without touching the ground. Oh yeah and the force leap is nice.

So has anyone tried to play the game using a Gamepad Pro (a clone of a PS2 controller) yet? It's obviously designed for a keyboard, but if it's coming out on PS2, there must be corresponding buttons on the controller. Any suggestions? I've randomly assigned important tasks to buttons, but still use the keyboard and mouse to move around... I just pick up the controller when it's time for a lightsaber duel. :D I think it has some great potential, I just feel kinda held back the way I have it set up now ... (Though I suppose I should quit being lazy and just Google how people set up their controllers for JKO. I'm such a frickin' padawan) Hey, this site rocks!

Okay, I give up. WTF do I do after I defeat the boss on the tomb level? I used force sense to see the symbols on the walls on either side of the coffin. I used push and pull on both of them. I pushed and pulled the stone thingies set into the walls below the symbols. Nothin'. ;p

I like the new specials--the sabre staff spin combos are cool, especially the way you can control exactly where you move and what direction you face even while doing a complex kata--but there should be more of them. Maybe I'm just missing them, but there should sophisticated Force-sabre combo specials.

LittleBigMouth, if you turn on force "sense" you can actually see how much health your enemies have left... so that's much better than seeing the saber burns coz they disappear after a while.

WOW! Damn, I can't wait for the full version! I'm really diggin' the sabre staff, just gotta learn the moves. It was very choppy, but JK2 is a bit choppy as well. Anyone know how much it's gonna be? I would guess in the $40-50 range. That means I might have to wait 'til X-mas to get it.:(

LOL @ Ulic! I probably would have done the same thing!:D

LittleBigMouth, just hit the key to change your sabre stance. Sabre staff apparently has only one stance, so changing stances alternates between staff and "regular" mode.

I am such a Star Wars addict.

I can get the demo from the office (have a Cable modem), but not at home (no cable modem).
So how to get this home, with no CD Burner or other ways?

"borrow" the hard drive. You heard me right.

Oooooh, the demo tomb level is money! :D The biggest noticeable difference for me is you can see the damage you're doing to foes... The more you hit say, a sith, the more orange-and-black-saber-burned he becomes, so you can actually tell if you're close to finishing the job. Same goes for yourself, too

Did anyone else notice that you can use the staff saber as a single saber? I started with the saber in hand, off. Then I right mouse clicked to throw it, and it ignited and came back as a single blade. The only way I could figure out to get the double again was to shut off the saber and turn it on again. And I couldn't throw it as a double saber. My blue girlie would just kick when I right mouse clicked with both blades out. Kinda weird...

Now that I've flown through the demo with glee, I have to go back and find all the secrets... ;)

in the release you get the choice between dual and staff after you're "proved" yourself (i won't say any more about it)... it's about 2/3 the way into the game

Okay, I've played it.

I'm satisfied with it as an incremental improvement over JO, but I was really, really, really hoping that sabre duels would be more like the duels in the movies and less hack and slash. I was hoping for a general-purpose telekenetic Force power too.

Is there any way to turn off the visual distortion that accompanies Force Push and Pull? I know, the graphics guys thought it was cool, but it really breaks my Star Wars imersion, makes it look less like Star Wars and more like an arcade game.

Also, one of my beefs with the JO single-player campaign was that there wasn't enough interaction with the environment. Yes, you could push buttons to open doors, and here and there was an object you could move or a section of wall you could destroy, but that was about it. Well, at least in the demo, there's even less interaction with the environment in JA!

Another environment beef I had with JO that seems at least as bad in JA is the high number of things that cannot be damaged by a lightsabre. _Very_ un-Star Wars-ish.

In the demo they just give you the option for dual sabres or sabre-staff right up front, and that's cool because the demo is supposed to showcase cool stuff. It seems to me, though, that those things are really hard-core and should be special abilities that are really hard to acquire. Does anyone know if that will be the case in the release?
