JKIII Strongly Rumored! -Loaf - Mar 30 04:20pm

Jedi Knight 3 is at 60%, and is planned for an Autumn(ish) release date! Here is the buzz from JKii.net:

You know those moments when a simple day is turned into pure excitement? That about sums up my feelings when I went to the mailbox today to grab my issue of Gamestar, Germany’s Number One gaming mag. So I take a look at the cover to see a female Twi’lek wielding two lightsabers! “What the hell” was naturally my first thought before I see the words next to it: Jedi Knight III Revealed. World Exclusive.

So, where to start?
Right, with the story. At the end of Jedi Knight II, Kyle saves Jan from Desann’s claws, and the galaxy from the Doomgiver. Six years later: Kyle is now an instructor at Luke Skywalker’s famous Jedi Academy. Thus, for the first time in the Dark Forces series, you don’t play as Kyle Katarn! Instead, you create a character for yourself. Create? Yes, similar to a role-playing game you choose your characters gender, race (Humans and Twi’leks are confirmed so far) face, hair cut and clothing! And the customization doesn’t end there: you also choose a saber handle, colour and whether you want to use one or two sabers! Later on, you will also get a Darth Maul-style double-bladed saber.

Talking of sabers: Raven Software is trying to put a lot more emphasis on the Jedi’s favourite weapon. While there will still be conventional weapons (even more than in JK II), the current estimate says that around 70% of the game will be spent using a saber. And those 70% look spectacular for sure: according to the article, it will be quite common to face of against several Dark Jedi at once. This is where a new feature of JK III comes into play: you can now combine your force powers! For example, you can fight one enemy with one of your sabres, and at the same time throw the other saber at the next foe! Of course, Raven is adding new force powers to keep the experience fresh for us long-time fans of the series. Other than in JK II, you will now once again be able to choose what skills to advance in one of three levels. And you can choose if you want to follow the path of the light or dark side! This being more than a little touch, Raven promises that the last few levels of the 30-hour campaign will be different for the two sides; same goes for the final cutscene.

Which brings me right to the next cool new feature: missions! For the first time ever in an action-game, you will be able to choose which mission to tackle next! There will be a few key mission you have to do at a certain time, but otherwise, you are free in your decisions. Gamestar expects you to spend the time between missions in the Jedi Academy, from where you start on your missions. As I said there will be key point missions, as well as boss fights and side trek missions will allow you to improve your character, and maybe even pure vehicle missions! While JK II placed several levels in the same location, JK III will mostly be one mission in one location. These locations will be a merry mix of places from the movies, books, comics and new stuff. Examples of locales you will visit during your quest are Tatooine and Hoth (including a little ride on a Taun-Taun!)! Raven promises that the levels will often be twice the size of their JK II counterparts, and filled with life: on Tatooine, you will have to fight of Tusken Raiders, which are busy hunting Jawas (poor little guys always get beat up)!

The game will once again use a heavily-modifed Quake 3 Team Arena engine, as well as all of Raven’s own enhancements to it! Despite its Age, the screenies sure look spectacular! The multi-player part will also be enhanced, and rumours speak of vehicular combat!

All I can say is "YAY!!"
Note: See the comments linked to this post for Hekx Noku's Screenshots.

Edit by doobie: Sorry Loaf, I had to edit the subject, the game hasn't actually been announced, just a butt ton of rumors going around... once we heard a confirmation from Raven or Lucasarts, THEN it can be "announced" (aka wait til E3)

I want confirmation of facts from the supreme overseers about this game. I want to see an official press release that says JK3 announced. I want to know what this game is all going to have in it, and when THEY plan to release it, not when its planned to be done. I didn't say that Raven was lieing about it. They're just making the game though, and just because they say its going to be like this doesn't mean that's how its going to be. And that doesn't change my opinion of it being a bad idea.

Haha, now you're kidding arent you? What DO you actually believe? If Raven said it's under construction, hell, it is! Why in the world should THEY lie?

Oh this isn't a matter of time to make the game. Its a matter of time the game comes out in relation to the original. My Biggest gripe with Playstation was that they just seemed to be pumping out games. There were 3 Crash Bandicoot games in only about 2 years. To me this looks like they're just trying to get more money. Just take JK2, throw in a few things that could have been put in an expansion pack, and instead make a whole new game. I don't really doubt you can make a game in a short amount of time. But what of the story and plot to go with the game. That is something that really could suffer from the timing.

Well, a lot of Star Wars games have sucked, so maybe JKIII will too, but I'm hopeful.

Let me just stress again that the number of months the project takes is irrelevant. I've seen projects of greater complexity cranked out in less time. It's a question of how much $$$$$$$ they're willing to put into it, and given the success of JKII I would expect them to invest a king's ransom.

Actually I saw that last night. So here's a different opinion. When a sequel comes out this fast, to me it seems rushed. It looks like "well since the first one was great let's crank out another one and make more cash." This also doesn't change the fact that there will now be 3 Star Wars games out in the near future. What of those that would have liked to have a change of pace from JK2 but would still have liked to get the next one. That's also $150 of merchandise right there if you want to get it. The game could be good and everything. But I think its stupid for them to be planning a release of a new one. Jk2 is only a year old. And there are still glitches that they should have fixed in it.

There is also still one last thing I await. Lucasarts confirmation. When that comes, we'll see how realistic everything said will be.

I'm just saying, The production of this game seems just way too fast for what the claims are that it will entail. 3 separate saber combats. Choice between light and darkside. Non linear levels. Does that seem like something that could all be planned out and approachin completion barely a year after the original came out in a completely new game?

As a veteran of many, many software projects, I can tell you that "XXX percent complete" is just something developers say. There's no real science to it, and those who say there is are the ones whose projects take the longest time and the most money to complete with the fewest features.

EDIT: I'd also add that, in addition to the "percent complete" being at best a guess, even if it were completely accurate the percentage of work complete has nothing to do with the time line. You can't "do the math" on how many months they've been working on it because you don't know how many people were working on it at any given time. I've been on projects that had four people working on them for the first six months (the requirements capture/design and architecture phase) and fifty people working on them for the following three months. Comparisons only work when they are apples-to-apples.

You know they do need concept art and a storyline even though they're using the same game engine. They need the artwork to create the models off of. And do the math. If they are 60% done. That means 40% remains. Even if you hold out till november being the last month that means they need to do 40% in 8 months. Doing basic math that means only 20 months to produce the game. 8 are still to come. So that means its been in development for a year already. A year ago Jedi Outcast was just out on the shelves, they hadn't even gotten a patch out yet I think. You do know that legitimate news agencies have been fooled before. Rumors run rampant about who's been casted in the Next Star Wars movie. It happens all the time.

This is definitely not real. A game is not 60% completed than just told to the public. You may want to believe that it could but it does not. :(
Tomorrow is April Fools Day too. I dont think it is a coincidence.

Allright: As you know might know I am from Germany and as a subscriber to the magazine I've got it this weekend.
First of all the magazine is not just any magazine, it's GameStar. It's the biggest mag in Germany with over 100000 readers and it's part of IDG publishing. They exist for 5 years and are very serious game-testers. It was one of the few ones who actually gave Black&White a bad review (although everyone else gave hyped best-marks). So much for the magazine and that it would fake. They would be 100% dead if they did.

Now they COULD have gotten wrong information. BUT their reports comes from a guy who actually visited Raven in the USA. They have an interview with Raven's boss and some pics of the guys there. They said they've actually PLAYED the game but due to LucasArts secrecy policy they weren't allowed to film. The magazine covers says worlexclusive btw, so it's really no wonder noone else has any info so far beside them. GameStar had several exclusive articles before, they have a good (international) reputation.

Some people wonder how they could do JK3 so fast but SWG or KOTR take that long. That question is quite simple: JK3 has not that much improovments. They still use (a boosted) Quake3 Engine, they only need to do new models, textures etc but they can built up on large parts of the code. Also they have experience with the engine now which usually speeds things up. JK2 was quite successfull but no addon came out. Why? Cause they started with JK3 at once, I would say. In fact one of the designers mentions in the article they were skeptic about the saber fights in the beginning. Only at the end they realised it turned out quite cool and maybe that's why they decided to do a JK2.5 as soon as possible ;) KOTR and SWG on the other hand have much more content. Role Plays like KOTR or Baldur's Gate are long to produce and have much code + content. Imagine all the item data, "force" spells etc. SWG is similar, it's an massive multiplayer game, it needs a lot of fixing and balancing. AND it needs a community which is ready to play when the game comes out. If they would announce SWG one month befoe it came out, half the amount of people would know about it ;)
If you will remeber right, JK2 was announce relative short aswell, it looks like it was a Raven trend to do so. And hey, if they say fall 2003 it does not mean it really comes out 2003. Think of Halo, Dukem Nukem Forever or WarCraft 3 ;)
Oh, almost forgot: 26 designers work on JK3. That's enough to proceed fast, isnt it?

Well, hope I have convinced you now... if you still don't believe, I have scanned the whole article. 7 pages, each 1600x2300. Each pic is about 2.5 Mb big which makes 17.5 MB in the end. If anyone has enough free space in his mail account, I can send them to you (www.gmx.net has 20 MB and is free).

Almost forgot: In the article they've included a link:
http://www.gamestar.de/reklawyks/secret-jk3/
After some time it turns into this
http://www.gamestar.de/reklawyks/secret-jk3/2.htm
"64% Health"? Looks like 64% done, huh? Yeah, strange why this is actually on the gamestar-server, but who knows?

Hehe, I would say they announce it this april. You still dont believe? Well, we will see ;)

EDIT: I have a smaller version now with pics at 800x1200 each. Makes about 2-3 MB total, free to mail :)

EDIT2: Even better, I have direct links to them ;)

Once again Nighty's burning with impatience.

I've been a gamer for quite some time now, but i had never been so excited as when i got the game: Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight!! U can imagine how i felt when i got hold of JK2!!

This is exactly what a person/dedicated gamer needs to put aside reality for a while and adding that extra bite to Life!

Thank u George Lucas and all the people who realized this for me and all the other true SW fans!!! Thank u...

This, sadly, is an april's fools joke. Every screenshot in there can be made with a modded jedi outcast plus some photoshop.

Plus, the last E3 convention was LAST YEAR this years hasnt happened yet. and to say the game is only 66% done but will be released in autumn?

umm no.
