I retract my previous statement regarding the fickle nature of Marzellines heart. Listening to the very last part again, the whole setting would have wormed Jaquino to -such- a degree, no matter his presence or absence at the very end, that the whole scene would've just deteriorated into an atmosphere of utter sadness and despair. The german goes like "Wer ein solches Weib errungen, stimme mit unserem Jubel ein", which i translate as "whoever managed to acquire (such) a wife, attuneth his joy with ours", which is in itself horribly maddening if you have been dumped just a few days ago. Indeed, Schiller's original poem, from which the phrase derives, goes like this: "Wer ein holdes Weib errungen, mische seinen Jubel ein! [...] und wer's nie gekonnt, der stehle weinend sich aus diesem Bund." Which i freely translate as: "Whoever hath acquired a good wife, blend his joy (with ours)! [...] and (he) who never had been able to, (must) remove himself tearfully out of our band." I.e. a double-rejection for Jaquino, which only serves to rub salt into the wound, and adds insult to injury.
