Okay, what are some good ideas for JK3 refinements/additions to the Holocron?

Some ideas:
-Dual Saber/Staff
-Siege mode tactics, map overview, etc.
-CTF map overviews, tactics, demos, advice on making a team, drills, etc.
-More detailed force powers section?

I'm probably in the best position to provide a map of the new map, as I have been drawing design pics since we started the project, so I volunteer to make a map of the new map! :D

Hopefully, FaDed won't change TOO much, so its a fairly quick trick to put it together. If I take too long with it though, someone else can feel free to do it. :D

Good idea
I constantly find myself telling people that the matrix is on the right...(It took me about 3 weeks to learn that myself :))

How about a printable map for finding your way around the Academy? After the new map is made, someone could surely construct a map of the map (LOL) so that the new students won't be TOTALLY lost.

Another suggestion - a few basic exercises that can be done by yourself...
:)

e.g. The Matrix Room Continuous Jump (MRCJ)exercise (don't know any maps with suitable similar posts for the MRCJ;)). You must continuously jump on all four posts WITHOUT landing or stopping...hold jump down! You must use air control, not a quick run.

You can work up to this exercise by using simple progressions.

1) Jump form one pillar to another, you may stop as long as you like.

2) The same, but you may stop for 2 seconds.

3) Half a second.

4) No stop.

**************

The RDFA distance exercise.

1) Back to a wall.
2) RDFA.
3) Turn on the spot and look at the wall...mentally mark the distance.
4) Continuously jump to another wall. DO NO put your back to it. Walk the last bit. When you get to what you think is the right distance, RDFA.
5) Note the mark on the wall...is it there at all? If not, too far away. If so, did you stab right in to the hilt, or even push into the wall with your body? If so, too close.
6) Rinse and Repeat.

One for Duals and Butterflys. :)

1) Using a level with a non-lethal drop:eek:...and one that is easy to get back up The pit in JAmap v1.4 is ideal.
2) Butterfly along the edges, using the turns to stay on. Duals can also use a combo straight after, trying to turn their attacks outwards while staying up...not easy.
Another useful version of this is just with jumping (hops) ...v.difficult to control.

If you use acrobatic side-flips, then note that you can trun in mid flip. It doesn't change direction of movement, just facing. Try it with flip-fun!:D

I'm sure the JATs have many up their greasy sleeves ...yuk!:)

CREDITS!
I don't know who the MRCJ one is by, but the RDFA one was taught to me by NFF.
The BFly one, simple as it is, is mine, AFAIK...

Hehe. If there are good terms for the things I described that are being used, then sure...but the ones I posted were pretty arbitrary. Just made up (apart from the Eternal Assfighter, LOL).:D:D:D

I was suggesting more a play-guide, so that when Student435 says, 'Man, I really have problems against THIS type of player,' they have some physical reference. It would promote a variation in tactics, and the concept that there is not such thing as an unbeatable move.

LOL, I suppose we would have to carefully choose the descriptions if this was done, as we'd start using these names instead...:P:P Perhaps Buttmonkey is better than the naughty 'A' word.

;)

EDIT:// And a technical section would b pretty good. Perhaps a couple of more common video setups, etc.? What Anti-Alias setting I should use if I have a Radeon 9000 etc.?

Maybe those terms would fit better in the dictionary? I dunno. :D

Maybe we could compile a resource list for the Holocron... Like links to common drivers, Direct X, all the necessary things like that. (Maybe part of a troubleshooting section?) We could also put up a hardware requirements list for JK2 and JK3. For all those new to the games. :D

Yeah, I know (kinda, LOL).

But as an amendment to the console page....

Another thing, how about a brief description of certain stereotypes of players, with strengths/weaknesses of the style and how to beat them.

Some examples.

v1.2 Assfighter - Walks around backwards trying to use one-hit Light backstabs to kill, sometimes using pull first, then spinning 180 degrees. - STR: It can throw an opponent, seeing an enemy continually vertical slashing away from you.... WEAK: Very easy to see coming, especially as they don't realise that they are two patches and one sequel too late... HOW TO BEAT: Most ways will win...wide sweeping Heavy slashes are effective, especially when circle strafing.

And some more serious examples:

Butterfly Bunny: (someone else who knows more about this should write this...my thoughts are a bit limited on the subject...I personally use dual spin combos while circling round during the final pause, but it ain't the best thing to do:()

Bouncing Betty: A flying attacker. Will bound around the fighting area, annoying the enemy like hell and choosing the right moment to strike. Variations include the Avid Acrobat (*cough* ME *cough*), who will often use a bounce after a cartwheel attack to move into you (ineffectually). - STR: Erratic movement can force an opponent to try too hard, and make sloppy mistakes. WEAK: Erratic movements can be VERY difficult for the Betty to judge too. Skilled Betties can quite easily seem to get around this problem, and slice through your defence with well-timed aerial attacks. Remember that it can be difficult for an enemy to judge where you roll to, especially when they are in midair. A curved roll-to-stab can be good, although hard to judge.(Q - I can't remember...can you jump again after an aerial attack, if you land halfway during the attack and it hasn't finished, or must you wait for the attack to end?)

Combo Queen - Will always use the maximum amount of strikes in a combo. Especially noticable in Heavy stance, this style can be particularly difficult to beat if you do not know about the combo system/numbers. WAY TO BEAT: Combo Queens are vulnerable in the period after the combo has ended (if applicable...), especially with Heavy users. Take it easy, and remember to count. Because of the slower movement during a combo, aerial attacks can be easier to judge, but careful you don't get your legs sliced before you can hit in the face...Sideways Slashing Combo Queens (SSCQs;)) can be countered with rolls, particularly rolling stabs.
**************************************

It should be emphasised taht there is nothing 'wrong' with using these styles - a good player should be able to use all when the situation deems it necessary...but that any single style of play is inherently limiting...keep the enemy guessing:D

Will add some more, and adapt them if you want;)

I'm talking about server-side stuff, not like cg_dismember 1 or something... Like ghoul2 saber combat, sabertracesaberfirst and things like that, which change the way saber combat works... They can really throw you on a public server, unless you're used to them or prepared somehow. :D

LOL - In addition to the cvar section, adding how to link binds together (";";) in the console commands would be useful, unless you are wanting to prevent abuse on that front.

Are there any changes from the JO console/cfg system? A lot of people, me included, have simply transferred their config (or in my case, all 3 of them;)) to JA. Could this cause problems?...if not then just an updating of the console guide is needed.

Also, a list of all the keys, not just commands. It's irritating when I don't know the name for, for example, the keypad insert key. I do now;), but often people want to know how to bind stuff, and it's not just the commands that can cause problems. Even the simple ones like enter are sometimes given different names ('return' in this case). I remember having difficulties when I was trying to bind all the hud removal/text removal '!' toggles to one key, so that I could use screenies quickly in combat...

lol

Let me repackage my last idea.

Maybe we should have a section mentioning:

a)Some optional/commonly used cvars
b)What they do when activated
c)What they affect in the game and how

This would clue some students into what may be throwing them off on a public server that is set up slightly different from our own.

Also, perhaps we should have a more extensive section on alternate game modes, such as Siege. Raven released a Siege guide, but I'm sure they missed something, which we can add in our own guide.

More ideas as they come. :D

Actually Khalek, the table of differences could probably be quite helpful. :D

One problem with going over sabering and the like: Raven has added EVEN MORE optional cvars... So, like ghoul2 saber collision, there are actually several different ways sabers will react in JK3. Kinda stupid, kinda irritating. I wish Raven would have just "made up their minds" and stuck with one system, so all servers would be alike. Then they could patch and repatch for default settings and the modding community could take over on alternate settings.

But that brings me to the idea... Maybe some of these alternative cvars should be mentioned, so that students realize how different dueling may be. (I hope you all understand this, I really don't want to hunt cvar descriptions and all that right now.) :D
