Hmm from what I knew the 1st smiley was 1st proposed by a fellow named Kevin MacKenzie on April 12, 1979. He posted to MsgGroup (the 1st sort of mailing list system, developed in 1975) saying that there was a "loss of meaning" in text messaging systems & proposed adding further punctuation to emphasize points.... I believe he spelled the 1st smiley as:
