Here's a friendly reminder to those of you who are US citizens of voting age: your vote counts! Voting for the candidate you believe in can never be a "wasted vote". * I want to see comments on this post tomorrow saying that you went out and fufilled your civic duties! This is a big election, and we need everyone's opinion on it so please hit those polls tomorrow! We now return you to your Jedi Academy already in progress... * A message for you in those states that lean heavily toward a particular candidate. |

That seems better than the punch card ballots too you know. If you accidentally punch the wrong hole in then you need to get a new card and start all over. I'm surprised all the junk punch cards haven't been dug up before claiming that they are uncounted votes thrown away by "insert political party/conspiracy here" to commit voter fraud. _______________ When you are going through Hell, keep going. -Sir Winston Churchill. Those who seek power and control of others, no matter the level, no matter the intentions, should never be given it. |

Quote: Herrera said she's heard stories from Democrats and Republicans. Doesn't sound too conspiratorial to me. Sounds like human error. This is the biggest non-story of the election season. Quote: people can alter the selections on their ballots, up to the point when they indicate they are finished and officially cast the ballot. So, voter checks the wrong box, fixes it, then when it finally reads as he wants he clicks "Okay." Maybe it takes him a couple tries to fix it. Human error? Or screen glitch? This is the silliest conspiracy theory I have ever heard. If it were the conspiracy Plo is trying to make it, then the screen would display properly, but the software would register the vote how the conspirators wanted, and nobody would be the wiser. It would have to be the ultimate inside job, too, as all the software engineers who worked on the machines would have to be in on the conspiracy, as would the entire test team and all of their project leads and managers, pretty much the whole company. Not believable. And the conspiracy theory assumes that these ingenious conspirators nonetheless thought it would be a good idea for the machine to display their trickery on the screen for the voters to see! Think about this. Just think, that's all I ask. Plus, these machines are rigorously tested by auditors once the engineers no longer have access to them--if the machines didn't tally the votes the way they're supposed to, one party or the other would cry foul. Duh. I didn't see anything at all in the article about Plo's claim that "it took computer engineers to come in and fix it after hours." Where did you get that, Plo? What I did see was that the voters who checked the wrong box fixed it themselves and then complained. The Democrats have to come up with these stories every time they get busted with a crack-for-voter-registration scheme. My personal favorite is Franklin county, right here in Ohio. Think you can get 90% of all the people 18 years old or older to register to vote? 99%? 100% even? The Democrats have done better than that in Franklin: There are 30,000 more registered voters in Franklin than there are adults in the whole county! Wow! When Republicans challenge these registrations, of course, they're accused of "intimidating voters," though how a fictitious person could be intimidated by anyone is beyond me. Letters sent to 37,000 voters to confirm their identities were returned undeliverable--no such address, yet most of them will stay on the voter rolls, and you better believe somebody will cast those votes. Now I have no doubt that there are some dishonest people in both parties. But the touch-screen conspiracy theory is just plain silly. I find it unsurprising that the woman who thought this a plausible theory had difficulty getting it to check the correct box. Kinda goes with the territory. (The county where I grew up was staunchly, overwhelmingly Republican, though I was not at the time. I knew a history teacher there who was himself as Conservative a Republican stalwart as ever you could meet...and every election he voted for one Communist. He said he wanted to know if the election judges were honest, and sure enough, election after election, he'd see exactly one vote for a Communist show up in the county results.) _______________ My signature is only one line. Wish I'd seen this thread earlier. Polls are long closed now. Sith, when we punch a ballot we do indeed vote for a candidate, but you are correct in that, for the Presidential race only, it's slightly more complicated in theory. I'll write up a thread on the electoral college some time. I'd like to point out something about the "wasted vote" thing... A lot of people in non-swing states don't bother to vote. After all, in the all-or-none system of electoral votes for each states, it doesn't make much sense to vote if you know your guy will lose in your state (if that's the only race you're interested in). Nor does it make much sense for a lot of people to vote if they know their guy will win whether they vote or not. In fact, historically voter turnouts have been high in states where it's close (I live in Ohio, and believe me it's been an exciting day here). But if you're not in a swing state, and if there is absolutely no doubt about which Presidential candidate will carry all your state's electoral votes whether you turn out or not, there are still two important reasons for you to vote anyway: 1. If your guy wins in the electoral college, it helps legitimize his Presidency if he also wins the popular vote nationwide. In 2000 lots of Bush supporters didn't bother to vote in Texas, for example, because the outcome there was never in doubt. But the result was that he lost the popular vote nationwide. 2. If your guy wins in the electoral college but loses the popular vote, you'll hear about it non-stop for the next four years! So get out and vote even if you're in a non-swing state. Too bad I didn't see this yesterday. But this advice will still apply four years from now. Oh, one more thing...Ignore the polls. Ignore the polls. Ignore the polls. All the exit polls were calling this election for Kerry all day. Guess what? Exit polls being horsecrap is not a new thing but a long-standing historical trend. They've never been a good predictor. Your magic 8-ball is more reliable. Remember that four years from now too, and don't let your candidate's standing in the exit polls (or any other poll) influence your decision to vote or not. _______________ My signature is only one line. voted Ulic, stop with the political wankery please. it's all over but the lawsuits now anyway edit: sithmaster, i assume you're talking about the electoral college. yes we vote for a candidate and who ever wins the popular vote for each state the dude in the electoral college casts his/her vote for that candidate. so in theory yes that person could change their vote to the other person but that's never happened to my knowledge. i hope that clears up our system a little more for you _______________ this is the internet, be serious damn it! Before anyone reads what I want to say next, I just want to make sure you don't think I'm telling you not to vote. Voting is good. I'm not a US citizen, but as far as I know, you vote for a representative of the candidate, and then that representative is "supposed" to vote for the candidate he announces. This system is completely corruptible. How do you know he really voted for the person he said he would? There are just financial agreements with the representatives so that the candidate the government agreed would become the leader. There's really no voting at all, as the people cannot elect anyone. _______________ Once I heard about something called "real life". Voted. Bush. And, the exciting part....I got to do the exit poll too, which allowed me to answer multiple choice questions on how I feel on Bush and how I feel on Kerry-who-by-the-way-served-in-Vietnam. You have to register to be able to vote? Seems a strange way of doing things.
