Security Alert!!!! -cHoSeN oNe - May 20 06:17pm

Have you downloaded applications such as Kazaa? If you have, chances are its running spyware.

Here is a little article on it from PC Magazine

What can you do about it?

Get Spybot now!!!

Totally free, it scans your system and gets rid of those memory eating, cookie reading, spyware. I scanned my system this morning and cleaned a lot of it off...This is a must download if you want to keep your network and PC safe.

Thanx Chosen!!!

I found like 60-some odd spywarez!!! I got rid of them and had no trouble at all running Morpheus. You might wanna try that instead of Kazzaa or Kazzaa-lite.

If I got this program, would it stop KaZaA from working? Or just remove the spyware?

Holy *#(@*...I'm sorry to resort to that kind of language, but Jesus Cristo...man, I knew there was something to Kazaa...when I used SpyBot, it told me I had like 50 different spywares running. I've just cleaned out my computer, and this is all because of you. Thank you guys at the JA. This only proves how much more we are than a gaming community.

My advice...don't use Zone Alarm. It's not really as much as it claimed to be.

java, zone alarm, I've learned is pretty bad. It's better than nothing but some guys with the... erhem... "right" knowledge told me it's way too easy to hack. IF you're starting a firewall, why not pay 50 bucks and get something really safe? I say Norten rules :)

I've seen a demo of SpyBot, and in its list of "spyware" that it removed, almost every item was simply a cookie. Cookies are _not_ spyware, but if you don't like them you can disable them in your browser. The simple truth is that it's really hard to get spyware onto the computer of someone who knows what he's doing.

Zone Alarm serves a couple of more important functions than SpyBot. Firstly, is makes you "port invisible" to those bozos who go around looking for open network ports to try to hack into peoples' machines. I'm not aware of any way anyone could access my hard drive remotely, but Windows seems to have a neverending supply of hacker-friendly "features" with new ones being discovered every day, so I play it safe and keep the ports closed.

The second thing Zone Alarm does is prevent _any_ application from connecting to the Internet without your permission. It doesn't wait for you to "clean" your hard drive of nasty stuff; the instant anything opens a port you find out about it. If it's a program you've never heard of, you just say no, I don't give my permission for that program to open a port. If it's something you do want you can give it permission to access the 'Net just once or always (your choice, and you can go back and change your mind of course).

I was going to original post it in the forums, but I don't think it would have received enough attention as it deserves. Besides, we have to keep safe from people hacking into the Matrix.

The Matrix? The Matrix is everywhere. It is all around us. Even now in this very room. You can see it when you look out your window. Or when you turn on your television. You can feel it when you go to work. When you go to Church. When you pay your taxes. It is the world that has been pulled over your eyes to blind you from the truth.

Hey, I've tried that out, haven't found many problems.

Those problems that are there, if I remove them, the program doesn't like me very much.

Solution? I have a purchased copy of ZoneAlarm Pro. I use it to keep spyware from accessing the web, and works decently at that as well. So the spyware is there, it just can't connect to the internet. Tricky, but you can get around spyware.

Then again, if all you guys stopped the spyware, how the hell are we going to figure out the habits of teenage Star Wars fans? Do you know how valuable that information is? Gah! This is a matter of preserving national security while maintaining the national interests! :P

Heh. But really, just find whatever combo works for you. I use ZoneAlarm, check things with AdAware every so often, and I have some purchased McAfee stuff to help out too. If you're going to sniff out spyware, use more than one program. They will all miss something. I use a registry cleaner also, to make sure that the program is entirely removed. But whatever works for you.
