Spring Cleaning at the Jedi Academy -DJ Sith - Mar 08 04:15pm

The most common complaint I get about the Jedi Academy is that "it's not like how it used to be". Instead of working on improving their skills, students nowadays concern themselves with class points, trials, and rank, and all the things that come along with that. It takes away from their capacity to learn. And it takes away from an Instructor's ability to teach.

We are dropping the concept of rank at the Jedi Academy. I know many of you were working toward getting up there, and I'm sorry for pulling the rug out from under all of you like this. Our goal here is to teach how to play the video game Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast, and to try to be a good part of the JKII gaming community, not personal advancement.

If you're looking for personal rank advancement: go join a clan. It's as simple as that. If you want to learn in an attitude neutral enviornment and to help your fellow players become better players then stay with us. We're going back towards being the open school that we were when we first opened.

The current Knights will stay as Knights, but the rold of a Knight is changing from a student rank to more of a separate job. For those who remember this they will serve in the old "Jedi In Training" role. They will serve to help keep the peace on the servers, and to assist in classes. The other students are having their rank converted to "student" (unless I can think of something else that sounds cool looking on a forum :)). Knights and above can still train Padawan. Knights will get selected in the exact same way they do now, minus the class points. They'll get recomended by a current JAT or JAC or staff member. They fill out an exam on the site, and take a trial on the server. Watch out though.. because this test is going to be rather in depth.. we've cooked up a real whopper that will test your skill and character. :)

The Jedi Mentor rank is leaving us as well. All Jedi Mentors are going down to the Jedi Instructor level. The Jedi Master rank is going to be given to our most senior instructors, who have been with us for quite some time and know how we work. You should be able to go to a Master with any question and expect to get a good answer.

Some of you will be dissapointed with this idea. I can't blame you. You've been working hard. And I'm proud of that, and proud of all of you. Keep working. Keep practicing. Help others learn. Now you can work and play without having to worry about all the overhead or if you have enough class points to do this or that or whatever.

To be honest, I'm the one who has been pushing for this for the longest time, first by creating "Fix the JA" (which is also responsible for the Open Session classes). I feel this the changes made will help >>STUDENT INTERACTIONS<< Because this is what the JA is meant for, so that you guys can learn whatcha need to, but not just at classes... EVERYWHERE

No points to lose. But if you sign up for a class it is still a good idea to unenroll if you think you can't make it. This will free up a slot for someone that can attend.

Still mixed feelings, to be fair I was going to take a trial tonight, but this will probabaly be better in the end. I would like to cast my vote for turning all the trial and trial prep classes into either new classes or more time options for current classes.

Will students still lost a point if they miss a class?

my 2 cents

sorry to keep this all going, and especially to bring the discussion of personal rank advancement and clans. but i just want you wall to know that my clan, TpS, sends it's members to the JA to improve their technique. granted, TpS has been around for a LONG time so we know what the hell we're doing, and granted not clans are like this, but i think it should be mentioned that a good number of the academy's best and most devoted students are in clans.

now i'm just wondering if there isn't going to be rank-restrticted classes, will there be some other way of letting students know that a class may be too advanced for them?

It's nice that the Academy is going to be the way it was when I first got here. I liked it better then. Kudos to the Administration on my behalf.

Before we had the ranking system as you knew it there were 5 ranks.. Student, Jedi In Training, Jedi Academy Trainer (Thats where we first got the name :)), Staff, and Administrator. The JIT's job was to be a JAT halper and fill in when one couldnt make class. If a m[erson failed his or her JAT trial we moved them to JIT so they could study up. The Knights will have duties roughly similar to those, but wil also the function of keeping the peace, etc.. ya know.. what knights do now. The JIT system was before we got to be as organised as we are now. Nowadays the JAT's have their own forums where we discuss who looks god for Knight and Instructor. the eligibility process should be alot smoother now than waaay back then.

Yay!!

Now I can stay after class for a while rather than assigning points for a half an hour! lol

Also, with so many trial classes and trial prep classes going down the tubes, JAT's should be able to cover a broader range of classes! :)

I am not saying it is a bad idea (i just had joined after the change, but before the points) so i don't know how the knights were aproved before the ranks, i didn;t even know if there were knights befroe the other ranks, i merely mean to say that while i like the good side i am worried a little about how the knights will be chosen, and that was all, I am here to learn above all else, the main reason i even tried to become a J-man was becasue of the Ranks limited Classes, so it does make me happy not to see the rank restriction.. i am just a paranoid pessimist who just hopes it will turn out better than he thinks it will and will trust the Councils choices.

*parades with his tag*
lol, thats a good expression! but insianic is right, it will be harder to seek for knights.
and older members who wont be JATs or JAKs wont get any recognition... which will MAYBE lead to their departure. i mean, you leave a school after your exams aswell, dont you? and what would the JA be without our oldies?!

but we'll see, i dont expect our oldies to leave just because they dont have an own rank. (heared me?! ;))

Reply to Insaniac's post:

You can't please everyone .. especially now that we're so big. If ALL you're here for is rank so you can parade a tag around the servers, then leave. Go join a clan. You'd fit in well with most of them.

If you want to expand your horizons with the game and help others out then stay. :)

"If you're looking for personal rank advancement: go join a clan." Amen to that, brother. It's definately for the best, though some might not see it now. I'm still going to work hard for knight, though everything's gonna be super-more-difficult. And the Joruney continues...

EDIT: Wonder what Doobie will say...

yeah, sounds good to me aswell. the ranks had no real point anyway (beside motivate). isnt it funny that something that should motivate is exaggerated so much that it becomes frustrating? a common problem of our society...

bah, i'm getting too phylosophical again, lol

this seems like a mixed blessing, there is the side that those who want to learn don't have to become a certain rank to attend a class (all the while hoping that the instructed doesn't decide to stop taht class)

then there is teh side taht you might not know who is truly ready tio become a knight. and otehr complications..

but i shall trust in the Council, and hope for the best.

I was aasked the question about the people that have current trials for Jedi Knight. Those trials will be adapted to the new (old? :)) system.

edit: this want my idea. I get told what's wrong with the JA on a near daily basis. :) Its one of the downsides of JAChood. This "personal advancement vs learning the game" or their derivatives were the biggest ones. I don't like seeing ppl get bummed out because they dont havbe enough points or whatever dumb reason. So what do we do? We cut away the things that hold us all down.
