Martial Arts...

Hey guys, i'm just wanting some opinions here...

I've been thinking of taking up a martial art, and I hear different things from different people. I heard Kempo Karate is good, but Judo is most "pure", and that Taekwon-Do covers everything. My main choice at the moment is going to Rick Young's Black Belt Academy, where he teaches a mix of Gung Fu, Muaythai, Jeet-Kune-Do, etc...Help!!! :)

Corran your legs are not that much longer than your arms. Only by a few inches. There are many ways to kick someone with very little space. Not all kicks go to the upper body and you don't have to run and jump to kick someone in the head. My favorite place to kick is the knee-cap. It will bring any size opponent down and they’re not getting back up very quickly, if at all.

tae kwon do and jujitsu are also good, you do lots of grips.
tae kwon do got kinda boring, too much kicking, not enough punching.

i mean honestly, how are you meant to kick someone when you have no room to do so?

i'm doing judo at the moment but i also did things like Ninpo, kungfu and stuff

ninpo is something based on a fast knock out of your oponent, so it's not much real practicing, but if you're getting better you'll fight with very scary wappons and stuff so thats kinda fun

kunfu is nice but you've to do moves that are really painful for urself, things like the split, you also need to try very hard to become better, your sensei really wants much of you

then judo it's sometimes a bit constricting but i like it a lot, especcially when you learn the moves to get somebodys bloodflow or breathflow out, another great thing about judo is that you'll learn a lot of things for on the ground (almost 70% of all fights are on the ground in real life) so that's kidna handy

so i like judo the most but it's your decision, kungfu is painfull (i think) ninpo is something you are noot alowed to use, also not at echoter most of the time and judo is something you can practice always

o yes...i also did tae kwando and ju jiutsu but that sucks i think

As a paintballer, I'm partial to firepower. I always loved that scene in Indiana Jones where he shot the guy waving the swords. :)

Well, Mr. Loser :P I'd start by finding a good academy to train at. I, myself, attended the Fencing Academy of Philadelphia. But, if you'd rather just jump up and start stabbing people, get yourself a foil, a mask, a glove (it hurts like a mother if you get hit in the thumb...you start bleeding everywhere ;)), a vest, and a plastron (underarm protector-this is also needed so that your exposed side has a bit extra padding.) Later on, if you want, you can get electric equipment, but that drives the dollar amount up a bit :P

I’m partial to Tae Kwon Do and Ju-Jitsu myself. I’m a 5th Degree Black Belt Master. Tae Kwon Do capitalizes on using the power of your legs and feet more that your arms and hands, but all parts of your body are used to defend, attack, or counter-attack. I would say it’s 70% lower-body and 30% upper-body. If you like jumping and kicking a lot then Tae Kwon Do is for you. Tae Kwon Do uses your body’s power and techniques you have learned to control your opponent. Even a defensive move like blocking can be considered an offensive move if done with power and the correct technique.

Ju-Jitsu is a softer art form (using your opponents movement against him) than Tae Kwon Do (greater force against your opponent), but not as soft as Kung Fu. It uses a lot of circler movements like Aikido and throws like Judo. I would say it’s 50% lower-body and 50% upper-body. A good balance between offensive and defensive moves. If you like to throw your opponent and learn how not to get hurt as much if you fall down on the street, then Ju-Jitsu or Judo are good arts to learn.

As in all Martial Arts it takes commitment and mental discipline to master. Remember boredom is a sign of mental weakness and a lack of commitment.

Look for a competent instructor and see how he/she teaches their class. If you like what you see, ask them some questions after class. Most important is to have fun as you learn. Keep a positive mental attitude and practice a lot.

If you have anymore questions and would like to get into more details, just ask me.

I'm going to go to a Judo class this coming Monday, to see how I do. If it doesn't work out, to it's time for some Kempo Karate!

BTW, Carve...didn't you leave man? :P

I AM flexible, by the way...surely doing the Van Dam lift speaks for that :P (elevated splits, making a sort of bridge, and doing barbell or dumbell curls :P)...I can kick a guy I know, who is 6'8" in the head...so yeah, I don't think that's going to be a problem. I'm only like 200lbs, which is, considering how much bodybuilding I do, quite little.

By the way Carve..."UFC grappling" covers alot of martial arts...UFC is MMA (Mixed martial arts). Everything from karate, to judo, to wrestling, to sombo wrestling, to hapkido, to gung fu, to kung fu...*shuts up*

to back aeth's words about fighting on the ground, why don't you take up wrestling? that's on the ground, it's alright for big guys too and you already like to watch wrestling so it might also be fun to actually do it :)

JumpinJedi is a big guy. Weight-training the way JJ does is counterproductive to standard martial arts. Either do boxing, UFC-style grappling, or kickboxing (your best option).
You'll probably have to lose about 40+lbs of muscle to do a martial art effectively, but the abovementioned focus more on power and strength than flexibility etc.

I did some teak-won do or however you spell it ;) It got boring after some time. 3/4 of the lessons we were stretching and doing stuff to get more agile. May be a good thing, but it's boring as hell. And we only did some fights against the air. Combos and stuff. Only every now and then we trained with humans.

There are two choices. You either do martial arts to actually fight, to actually be able to knock somebody down, whatever. Or you do it as a way of life, some kind of medidation/religion stuff.

From what I've heared, Judo is trying to use the enemys power as his disadvanatge. Like doding a hit and pulling his arm and let him fall down. Karate is mostly hand figting. Teak won do uses a lot of kicks.
There are so many variations... i'd just try out :)

Oh, and btw. Statistiks show tat about 75% of all serious fights happen on the ground. Maybe search for a martial art for ground fights? ^^

I do kickboxing.
It's a bit hard sometimes, but it's worth it; if someone throws a punch at me today I know how to get him in an armlock before he knows I've moved.

It's very usefull and very fun.

You know those stupid clothes? They're called "gees". A 'gee' is a really really reaaly offensive word in ireland or somewhere.

hehe...gee...

You gotta take Aikido. Very cool, uses the power of the other opponent to completely destroy him. (If you do it right) I broke a polse from a mugger with it.

I did Karate for 4months and I got to green belt adn within 3months of training I managed to do the splits which you need for 'kingeru' and 'washageru' (kicks) because if you can do the splits then you can kick over an adults head and accuratly aim. Very uncomfortable too! I also quit because I was bored.
But I've always wanted to try Judo...I've done a bit of it before and it was great fun, it's more physical than Karate and it's a lot more handy if you need it becuase you basically learn how to chuck people everywhere making sure that they are knocked out or on the floor!:D
One thing I have to say about Karate is that 'Sensaie'(don't know how you spell it!): 'Master' wnats a lot of commitment to Karate, they usually ask for you to practice sequences ('Katas')every night and practice doing the spilt every night too! You also have to learn a little Japanese here's a taster:
(This is the words the way your meant to say them not the correct spelling!)
itch - one
knee - two
san - three
she - four
go - five
row - six
seech - seven
hatch - eight
koo - nine
joo - ten

oos - yes/ok

Well you asked for help! lol
Good luck!:P
