Martial Arts...

Hey guys, i'm just wanting some opinions here...

I've been thinking of taking up a martial art, and I hear different things from different people. I heard Kempo Karate is good, but Judo is most "pure", and that Taekwon-Do covers everything. My main choice at the moment is going to Rick Young's Black Belt Academy, where he teaches a mix of Gung Fu, Muaythai, Jeet-Kune-Do, etc...Help!!! :)

I'm going to go to a Judo class this coming Monday, to see how I do. If it doesn't work out, to it's time for some Kempo Karate!

BTW, Carve...didn't you leave man? :P

I AM flexible, by the way...surely doing the Van Dam lift speaks for that :P (elevated splits, making a sort of bridge, and doing barbell or dumbell curls :P)...I can kick a guy I know, who is 6'8" in the head...so yeah, I don't think that's going to be a problem. I'm only like 200lbs, which is, considering how much bodybuilding I do, quite little.

By the way Carve..."UFC grappling" covers alot of martial arts...UFC is MMA (Mixed martial arts). Everything from karate, to judo, to wrestling, to sombo wrestling, to hapkido, to gung fu, to kung fu...*shuts up*

to back aeth's words about fighting on the ground, why don't you take up wrestling? that's on the ground, it's alright for big guys too and you already like to watch wrestling so it might also be fun to actually do it :)

JumpinJedi is a big guy. Weight-training the way JJ does is counterproductive to standard martial arts. Either do boxing, UFC-style grappling, or kickboxing (your best option).
You'll probably have to lose about 40+lbs of muscle to do a martial art effectively, but the abovementioned focus more on power and strength than flexibility etc.

I did some teak-won do or however you spell it ;) It got boring after some time. 3/4 of the lessons we were stretching and doing stuff to get more agile. May be a good thing, but it's boring as hell. And we only did some fights against the air. Combos and stuff. Only every now and then we trained with humans.

There are two choices. You either do martial arts to actually fight, to actually be able to knock somebody down, whatever. Or you do it as a way of life, some kind of medidation/religion stuff.

From what I've heared, Judo is trying to use the enemys power as his disadvanatge. Like doding a hit and pulling his arm and let him fall down. Karate is mostly hand figting. Teak won do uses a lot of kicks.
There are so many variations... i'd just try out :)

Oh, and btw. Statistiks show tat about 75% of all serious fights happen on the ground. Maybe search for a martial art for ground fights? ^^

YOu should try Ju-Jitsu. THat really kicks it. And its pretty hard. But Taek Wondo really covers everything. Including Sticks and Swords

I do kickboxing.
It's a bit hard sometimes, but it's worth it; if someone throws a punch at me today I know how to get him in an armlock before he knows I've moved.

It's very usefull and very fun.

You know those stupid clothes? They're called "gees". A 'gee' is a really really reaaly offensive word in ireland or somewhere.

hehe...gee...

You gotta take Aikido. Very cool, uses the power of the other opponent to completely destroy him. (If you do it right) I broke a polse from a mugger with it.

I did Karate for 4months and I got to green belt adn within 3months of training I managed to do the splits which you need for 'kingeru' and 'washageru' (kicks) because if you can do the splits then you can kick over an adults head and accuratly aim. Very uncomfortable too! I also quit because I was bored.
But I've always wanted to try Judo...I've done a bit of it before and it was great fun, it's more physical than Karate and it's a lot more handy if you need it becuase you basically learn how to chuck people everywhere making sure that they are knocked out or on the floor!:D
One thing I have to say about Karate is that 'Sensaie'(don't know how you spell it!): 'Master' wnats a lot of commitment to Karate, they usually ask for you to practice sequences ('Katas')every night and practice doing the spilt every night too! You also have to learn a little Japanese here's a taster:
(This is the words the way your meant to say them not the correct spelling!)
itch - one
knee - two
san - three
she - four
go - five
row - six
seech - seven
hatch - eight
koo - nine
joo - ten

oos - yes/ok

Well you asked for help! lol
Good luck!:P

Hey! Now fencing is something that really 'tickes my fancy', as they say.
I've always figured it as being quite an expensive sport tho.
What sort of outlay would I have to make to get 'up and swinging', as it were?

If you can...JEET KUNE DO! :D I REALLY want to take Jeet Kune Do, because I have heard GREAT things about it. It's kind of a flexible style...maybe you can read up on it. Search Google or something, you'll find info. :)

Wanna know what my name means? Peralos Ale'Velkyrii: Perilous Drunken Angel, or PDA for short. :P
Perilous, because I'm bound to get into fights I can't win. Drunken, because ALE! Angel, because a valkyrie is basically an angel of Odin.
I'm here to send you to the afterlife, but I can't gurantee I'll be stable enough to win a fight. :D

I did Tae Kwon Do and got up to Bo-dan before we moved to England. Haven't done it since then. I did use it in a fight once, this kid came after me with a knife and about 4 cronies. Koriyo comes in handy for teaching you some useful moves.

I took up Karate for a while, but it bored me senseless. Dunno, maybe it was the instructors.
Also tried Tae Kwon Do and had waaaay more fun!
Sigh... but then, I got a job, working shifts and all that jazz, and had too little free time to continue.
Now I have the reflexes of a house brick, a belly, flabby man breasts and an addiction to cheese.

My advice is avoid cheese...:D

Yeah, Tae KwonDo is a fun martial arts. Once you get to black belt you learn how to defend yourself against guns and knives. But before that you learn to defend yourself against some grab attacks, like wrist and collar. You do forms(imaginery fight scenes) too which are pretty fun, some challenging as well. You also get to spar which is where you fake fight with equipment and stuff. As well as breaking boards :D Good luck JJ, I suggest Tae KwonDo, whatever you take will probably be just as good.

I took Tae Kwon Do for a couple years and loved it. We used to get together with a Gong Fu school for sparring classes, and they were pretty good. I've heard good things about Jeet Kune Do.
