Martial Arts...

Hey guys, i'm just wanting some opinions here...

I've been thinking of taking up a martial art, and I hear different things from different people. I heard Kempo Karate is good, but Judo is most "pure", and that Taekwon-Do covers everything. My main choice at the moment is going to Rick Young's Black Belt Academy, where he teaches a mix of Gung Fu, Muaythai, Jeet-Kune-Do, etc...Help!!! :)

the competition judo is basically ju-jitsu, with different rules. EG, the fight starts with a grab, and if you get an ippon in throwing, the fights over. in ju-jitsu (aki ju-jitsu... the one that ive done) there are three stages. standup- punching and kicking, throwing, and grappling. if you get an ippon (a perfect punch/kick, perfect throw, and a tapout) then you win the match

Yeah, as I practise things, they're becoming second nature.

The great thing is,
Practice those moves , then practice some more until it becomes a second nature to you so you use the techniques in a reflex. You get punched? Wham, in a few seconds you have him on the ground with his arm ready to get snapped.

I took TKD for a while when I was a kid. It's a *sport*. NEVER ever ever use it to fight unless you want to make your opponent fall over dazzled by all the pretty kicks you can do. :)

Anyone have a reccomendation on what would be good for getting back into things. I've become MUCH unathletic since getting hardcore into computers and would love to take this stuff up again.

JJ, i know about ur situation, i've experienced the same thing. It's very simple, all u gotta do is to look in ur heart what it is that u prefer in different fighting arts. Find the very thing that u extract from them and let that guide u.

eg: I saw the movie 'The Perfect Weapon' once and i realized that the speedstriking technique was the thing that had always interested me the most. Not so much the kicks. Since 'speedstriking' is central in kempo, well, the choice had become very simple. :)

I would say try out a few till you find one that fits, and don't limit yourself to just one style. I go to alot of open style meets with my dad and those are really good. But if you are going to go with one then TKD is a god starting style if it is a good teacher. It has a god basic stance and a variety of kicks and punches, but it is kinda weak on grapples, but what can you do. Its like in jk2, you shouldn't use just red, use blue and yellow too, nothing is stoping you. Fight a grappler and grappel a fighter, I don't know how that makes sense because it is the same thing backwords and it can't work both ways, but that is the saying.

Ive heard alot of people say that Tae-kwan-do isnt all that usefull in real fights. The kicks are too high which makes for a weak defence.

I myself have done judo for 5 years( which i found boring ) and im now doing jiu-jitsu.

In my opinion jiu-jitsu is way better than those offensive martial arts because if you get them onto the ground, they're screwed and you're not, their kicks arent gonna help em then. :)

But in the end it all depends on the martial artist himself. Ninpo/Ninjitsu are great martial arts as well though, if you have a chance of taking those classes, do it. Its one of the most lethal ones there is.

personally if ur beginner take up something basic first then go for something that requires more skill
I do kickbxing and kung fu but i started doing karate first then judo then tai chi but kickboxing is my fav there is not structured style of fighting in it every fighter is unique.
