Obviously I cannot do it by myself, but any of you who wish to take part in an idling experiment sign up on the thread below once we get the number we can formalise the ideas. The first result I have is fairly positive, and evenings are definitely the best time to do it.

The initial 2 hour idling sessions wielded small but positive results and I have posted it here.

Anyway, it's an idea i've had for a long time (Kaldor stole it) and now i'm finally doing something about it. If people sign up, prefer from both sides of the atlantic we should be be to get a better cross section of time, on the servers.

Thanks

Cuth

That depends on what you mean by level of control.

If you're talking about being able to do multi-swing combos, no.

You've got a few basic attacks, but you also have active blocking/parrying. So rather than being a JK/JA style joust-fest where you swing at each other while trying to dodge, you can instead just block your opponent if you time it right.

Or you can mount up and charge through them with a lance. Or shoot them with a bow/crossbow.

It's pretty darn fun. I picked it up on Steam over the holidays. I'm terrible at 1v1 in multiplayer but I do enjoy castle siege mode where I can load up my crossbow and defend from a distance while dodging incoming arrows. :D

Doesn't look like it has the same level of control as JKA though

A bit late to the party perhaps, but it sounds like some of you need to take a look at Mount & Blade: Warband.

Yeah, even a remotely cool sword fighting game would suffice as I am sure that people would immediatly start modding it and we will soon would have star wars content in it anyway.

I'd go as far as to say I'd prefer it if JKA was not a Star Wars game and was more realistic. I remember some servers years ago that had their entire clans made to use personal katanas, samurai skins, Japanese maps, etc and that was pretty cool.

I think what appealed to a lot of us in JKA is the fact that learning how to fight with the lightsaber was kind of like learning a martial art. Only, there was more than one style and it kept evolving and people kept figuring out different approaches and techniques.

Of course, Yawspeedjitsu ruined it all. :P

i kinda agree with Mike as well.
while JKA was always about hanging out with cool people, having random fun conversations and sometimes even serious debates about life (lolwat), but that was fun when TJA was active.

it was active because much more people actually enjoyed the game. its not just about any game however, jka had a pretty cool combat which you kinda had to learn in different way than in most games. i mean you dont really need any socialising to learn how to shoot a zombie in l4d right?

basically both of these things dont work without each other.

See, this is what gets me. I get that there's a core of guys who love JKA and still want to play it, and power to you all. But I mean, obviously in terms of the JA there's not a lot of activity, and you guys make it sound like if you want a small handful of people to come on a JA server you have to log into the server and twiddle your thumbs until someone turns up. That kind of sucks.

I mean, here's where I'm coming from; I've been playing the JK series since 2001, and started playing JKO with the JA in July 2002 or so. I've been playing JKO/JKA around here for nearly nine years. the JK series of games are fantastic and I've had countless hours of fun playing them with you guys, but it's not awesome enough to play for near on a decade.

With that said, I don't really fancy playing JKA anymore. I'd rather play a different game with you guys, and that's why I'm very excited for TOR. In the meantime, I'm not going to idle on a JKA server for an hour or two hoping that someone will turn up to play a game that I don't entirely enjoy anymore with me. :P

What Mike said.

Mike, I can absolutely see what you mean, and I am really looking forward to the release of TOR, as those people who are interested in gaming and were maybe once part of this community will play that instead, it’ll be pretty awesome having a very large and active player base, with people who we already know.

Many of the people who play this game and are part of this community have been playing it for what is the best part of a decade. It’s a long period of time in which to play 1 game, and obviously people will bore of the game or get frustrated with it (as I personally have), and stop playing, on a temporary or permanent basis. I have played other games with members of the community who have moved on. MB Universe was one, and it was good... for a time.... Star Wars Galaxies... which was also good... for a time. I also have the advantage of only playing this game for the last couple of years, and because, well, I’m not patient, I have the added bonus of not being very good. So on the servers there is always something for me to be doing, practicing, training, whatever. It is slightly sad that I came into this game so late, if I got into it earlier, I would have seen the academy in its prime. Full servers. active classes. hell active members... But still, I’m here now.

The point I’m getting at is this, this place is such a fun place to be, it drags you back in, it reminds you to have fun with your mates, albeit “cyber mates”. It’s great, and there are still people out there who want to play this game, they, like me, really like it and want it to live on a little longer. There are public servers which are still pretty full most of the time, which means some people want to play most of the time. What I’m trying to do is to demonstrate with tangible evidence that there are still people in the community who want to come online and a duel or hang out or whatever it is they want to do and with a few peoples help hopefully that will pay dividend. Also I have a few ideas which might temporarily raise activity, and am working on the few other things with some students who feel the same way about getting some new members here as well.

Anyway, sorry for the ramble, basically for those who don’t or haven’t played regularly for a long while because of opportunity cost or, well, you just played it enough back yonder year, if you fancy dusting of the ol’ lightsaber coming on the server and chopping a few people up please do. If you don’t want to, fine, but for those of us who do, even if you think we are being silly, let us get on and be silly. The word here is optimism... Let’s have some..

On the note, my dumplings are cooked, hopefully see you all shortly.

Mike, I am with you, I see your point and understand you well.

But please take note that Cuth tried to address people who complain about activity on our Academy servers - for what he provided a solution for: If you want to increase activity hop on the server and wait and idle a bit.

I totally understand that there are tons of people here who like the fellow members but are not too fancy to play the game anymore. I understand that you want to move on and play different things, be it left 4 dead, starcraft 2, minecraft, ff 14 or hello kitty island adventure...

in fact this is more or less a mere statistic for people you would still WANT to play the game but do not do so because they say that there is no activity.

but as i said, i understand your comment and for my part i am partly with you on your argument :)

Ooh, minecraft. It's a great game. Can't we get a (unofficial) minecraft server? It's really cheap.
