I'm not so sure, mace is my favorite character but i've always wondered if he really did beat palpatine or if the whole fight was a set up by palpatine to turn anakin over to the dark side. i mean after all palpatine did give yoda a good run for his money. |

Mace would have killed Palpatine. He should have just stabbed him, rather than declaring "I AM GOING TO END THIS.....ONCE.....AND FOR ALL.......!" before doing a wind up. Mace does rock, but his apparent love for the dramatic kinda screwed him over. Very upsetting lol. It's hard to argue with Sam Jackson though. |

Its easy to say that with hindsight, however i'm sure the Masters did not feel it was wise to give in to the adolescant demands of the latest Jedi Prodigy in their midsts. If Palpatine had not started Anakin really questioning them, and not made him really desire the Mastership then things would again: have been different. Mace made mistakes, blind mistakes, however if not for Palpatine then thoses mistakes would not have been possible to make, or would not have mattered as much. Its possible Palpatines entire plan would have ended right there because if Anakin had seen him acting truly evil then he would have been less inclined to side with him. However if Palps had not recorded Mace saying "we're here to arrest you" and such, he would have not had much to present to the senate to prove the Jedi were traitors.

If mace had agreed to this, I believe the following would have happened:
Palpatine would have convinced Anakin that the Jedi were planning to slay him later, as soon as he had lived up his usefulness.
