Are the rising gas prices affecting you?

People at work have been telling me that within a week gas prices in Michigan will be over 3.00/gallon USD.

Many of my friends who are just students and working like 10 hours a week, have pretty much given up on ever leaving the city they go to college in.

My friend just got married so when I drove to his wedding it cost me over $60.00 for gas thier and back.

Are more people here driving less? Riding thier bike or walking places? Using public transportation? Switching to better fuel economy or hybrid vehicles?

Last I looked in Michigan pretty much everywhere around the Detroit area gas is around $3.15/gal for regular unleaded.

On semi-related note, lets here it for Detroit again, according to the news last night, Detroit now has the highest poverty rate of any city in the U.S. with 37% of detroit residents living below the poverty level. I'm sure gas costing $4/gallon is really going help that situation....

Even here in Holland the gas prices are higher than normal. All because of what happened in the US, so it also effects the EU countries.
I heared that the netherlands is the country with the highest gas prices anywhere in the world!
Well, I can't drive yet, so I'm good :P

Man, I put $42 worth in my Camry yesterday. There was a time when I couldn't FIT $42 worth of gas in that car. (I've only owned it for 2-3 years.)

Honestly though, the recent changes in weather have been somewhat upsetting. I remember when I was young, skipping back to the last book of the Bible and asking my mother what it was about. It was the first I ever worried about such a thing, but it has stuck with me since.

But, today is another day. Tomorrow can be just the same.

Also remember a couple of things.

Not only has this taken a hit to about a quarter of US oil supply, but it is also labor day weekend coming up. This is a time that prices do normally spike, and then start dropping afterwards. Because of the worry about there not being any gas, people are rushing to buy the gas and probably taking a few extra cans along too. If you've ever taken an economics class you'll know that the way to decrease demand is to raise the price.

Good note Ulic, I'm keeping that one in mind.

Mom's friend of a friend etc told them at work today she was pulling in and they started switching etc. They ended up getting the cheaper price, but the point of the matter was, they DID change it during the flow of traffic. Interesting, yet scary...

Well, I had tuned up my old moped again. Only paid $20 for that thing from my cousin. Works like a charm, much much better than driving a car around. And that'll work for some time. I just don't have a commute, only a 5-10min commute.

Other than that, just have to budget a bit differently then. Cut back on some other things, which I should be doing anyways. We're still at 2.79 here. I still get great MPG to my car, I'm glad I invested in that cold air intake a few months ago, is paying for itself now with the improved gas milage.

Though I had my doubts it will stay around too long. Reserve are being opened temporarily, and the regulations are being lowered, so the gas that doesn't meet the summer emmisions standards (but meets the fall, etc.) is now usable, which opens up even more gas.

NY Market for wholesale gas had it pegged at $2.47 today. So $3.00? You know who's gouging you for the profits. That's 17% in profits, at $3 a gallon. It is $2.90 in the wholesale markets for Louisiana.

Although, reasonably, they aim for about 15-20% in profits.

Also know that they cannot change the price more than once a day, according to the US Weights and Measures, and cannot change the price while you are waiting in line. If they change the price when you are in line, they have to give you their lowest advertised price (what you saw when pulling in). It's just illegal to change the price you pay while waiting in line to gas up.

Just some consumer knowledge.

I don't want to stir up any kind of international argument, but you really can't compare prices between nations... We're all set up completely different.

America is often considered spoiled, but it's the way our economy evolved. We're not a very efficient people, more over-the-top than anything. We all have jobs and other engagements that drag us many, many miles away from our homes and do not of any such luxury as public transportation everywhere. (I live 13 miles from the nearest town and the only bus that comes by is a school bus.)

My point is, we can't help the situation we're in, so it's getting to be a strain on a lot of us now. The majority of Americans are in heavy debt as it is and some are barely scraping by. (Myself included.)

Anywho, carry on. Oh, and best wishes to the survivors of the incident. I can't imagine losing my whole world like that.

A new development in my area of the USA(The Mid-atlantic area, for those who dont know). Gas prices have risen to about $2.70-$3.00 a gallon. I also just heard that some gas stations are shutting down because of no fuel. I have a feeling that Hurricane Katrina is part of the reason for these sudden shut downs. Hopefully this will change for the better soon! *Key word: Hopefully!*:(

EDIT: Also, send your thoughts and prayers to those down in the Gulf Coast. They are having a very rough time, thanks to the Hurricane.:(

well, personally I haven't been affected much. I'm eighteen years old myself, but I don't have a car, nor do I have a license.

Should I have one of these, I expect I'll only use the car to drive my girlfriend home ... but only because there's no buses in her vicinity.

If I go somewhere, I go on foot, I take the bike, or I take public transportation (the bus usually).
I don't expect to use much of the car in the future either.

My higher-grade-education-school will be right at a buss-stop, and I can probably even take up a job right in the town where I live. If so, I'll only need a bike to get to work.
And if me and my future family (wife, kids, ...) need to go on holidays, we'll be taking the buss and train, or plane.
I don't think I'll ever need a car.

at least I hope not ...

... no need to be insultive :). Even for them, the prices are rising. How would they know about our prices if we don't tell them?
If all of a sudden they have to pay double for something, they'll complain, even if we have to pay triple for it.
They have a right to complain, just as much as we do ... :P

Another reason why prices are so high, is because we are under the thumb of the people we buy it of of. They can raise their prices for what ever they want. The problem is being dependent on it period. Here we are so technically advanced(by our standards at least) and we still depend on the same fuel we were hundreds of years ago. There ARE other fuel sources out there that we can tap into. Non polluting, safe, cheap and efficient. I think we are being made to depend on a fuel that is making a select few rich. I myself drive as little as possible. I'm a home-body anyway, so it doesn't bother me.

I'm glad this thread popped up. My uncle is always coming up with Ideas and inventions. He recently came up with a GREAT one! I honestly and truely think it could change the way people use energy period. When his patent comes back, I'll fill ya in.

Oh yeah this is interesting also.

Another reason prices can go up.

That's not why Orion. Prices aren't increasing by close to the amount the dollar is fluctuating.

Accounting for inflation, gas still costs Americans less than it cost in the 70's or earlier. And the reasons gas prices are high is for several reasons.

Foreign demand: China has huge and increasing demands for oil now so we are competing with them for a lot of oil. If you remember in the late 90's when gas was down around $1/gallon, part of that reason was because the asian economy took a huge dive.

US Refinery capacity: There haven't been any new oil refineries built in the US for at least a decade. We're at almost full capacity.

More oil: The last big oil find was up in Alaska back in the 70's. Almost all other countries are at their maximum production capacity. You want more oil, go tell the environmentalist to go suck on a tail pipe and advocate drilling in ANWAR and building of those evil polluting refineries. Face it if we had been able to drill in ANWAR when they first wanted to we probably wouldn't be feeling the pinch we do now.

Hurricanes: Whenever a big one comes through the gulf we need to shut down and evacuate the oil rigs out in the gulf.

We're still paying less than the rest of the world for our gas too.
