Aurochs Aurochs Aurochs -Cuthalion - Apr 21 08:45pm
The main purpose of the interview is to try and raise awareness about the competitive branch of the Jedi Academy. The Jedi Academy Aurochs are an established team and have been competing for quite some time, and offer classes taught by Vision and Piccolo on basic and advanced Team Free For All methods, which are helpful to all. I managed to speak to them recently about Rock, Roll and most importantly AUROCHS!

Firstly how long have you been playing JKA?

Piccolo: I started playing JKA Multiplayer at the beginning of 2006 in a JA+ Romanian community where I learned the basics of the game. I really enjoyed the game and in one year there wasn't any competition left for me there so I moved to the base mod of the game (December 2007) when I joined thejediacademy.net

Vision: I first played JKA when it was released, but only Single Player. I got back to it around summer 2005 and started playing multiplayer, so that would be roughly 4 years.

What has kept you playing JKA instead of moving on to other games?

Piccolo: I used to play a lot of games back in the days but nowadays JKA is the only game I still play online. Joining the JAA and playing non-poke had a determinable effect on me but I guess the fact that I always liked the Star Wars Universe helped too.

Vision: The whole concept of saber combat is something I found (and still find) very unique. Also, being a part of the JAA made JKA such a great experience that I simply couldn't quit.

Who was the most influential player when you were first starting out as a JKA fledgling?

Piccolo: Well back in my JA+ days there was Zeal who was one (and still is) of the best JKA Romanian players but I started playing base with the thought of joining the JAA after I saw the Masta's Revelations 4 Frag Movie.

Vision: Hmm, there were many people who influenced me back then. I think I was most impressed by Masta and Dark (aka The ThinG). I remember watching demos of them, trying to learn a thing or two.

Are the Aurochs still recruiting?

Yes, we're always looking for new talents.

The classes seem to have been postponed recently, when or will these start up again?

Some of us are really busy with their exams recently, so the classes will start again when we get more time. This should be the case in the summer.

How long have the Aurochs been around / active?

The Aurochs were originally a Hydroball team. Later the name carried over to the first TFFA squad, that was sometime around 2003 I think. Since then we had our ups and downs with activity, and the team was remodelled a few times as well. There is a good article about our history here.

How many active Aurochs are there?

At the moment we have 10 active Aurochs: Elminster, Comma, Kain, Trey, Vision, Piccolo, Lok, Komence, Fullmetal and Sauce. You can find our roster here.

How often is there Auroch training?

We train when we get the chance, mostly in the evenings when we organize a match or have our own practice sessions.

Are there any activities you do or use for team building exercises?

We don't have any special activities for that purpose, we've never had problems with our team spirit anyway. I think that's because we always stay in touch. We try to play together as much as possible, weather we play a serious match or just mess around. IRC is a great help as well.

When you train do you offer advice / constructive criticisms, or are all Aurochs of a standard where general training isn’t required?

It’s already kind of hard to play non-poke in the ESL since all teams use wiggled swings which give them the upper advantage. We must rely on team work so training is essential for us. We always try out different tactics and give each other tips since we all have different styles.

How or what would you recommend people who are relatively inexperienced do to gain more experience in TFFA and general saber skills in general?

Most people who apply for the JAA have the same old problem: too much 1on1 which is wrong. In order to play this game type you must rely on team work, backstabs, switching opponents after you hit them and of course in-game communication (we mostly use binds like “Watch Out” or “He’s Low” etc). Also, keep in mind what 3th said about TFFA "It's not about the frags, it's about not dying. Score a hit and don't get hit. The frags come in due time." You can try out this stuff on the JAA Home Server Jaktorow (84.244.138.10:27960, default password “rochs”) or on different public TFFA servers. Signup at our forums if you have further questions.

For all the more inexperienced members out there, how are the Aurochs structured? What I mean by this is, are their trials to join the Auroch team? Is there an Auroch Team Captain?

Yes, in order to make it to the team you must face our trials. You can find out more about our trial system here and here.

That is all the information we can give you since the rest is secret.
About the 2nd part of the question, yes, we do have a Team Captain which is Vision but there are no ranks within the JAA. Some of us have special tasks that help the team to be better organized.

How are the Aurochs matches structured? I.e. are you playing in some form of League? Or are the matches randomly arranged? Or is there another method, perhaps more secretive….?

The JAA currently is signed in the ESL TDM Ladder with our 2nd Team – Meet The Spartans and we are playing approximately 4 matches/week. This is our practice team where we try different strategies, different lineups and tactics until we can sign in the main JAA Team.

I recently spoke to FullMetal / Angel D’Kana who mentioned a CTF team, is this a new idea, or one which was forgotten and has been revived?

There is a rumor that a new ESL CTF League is going to take place so this is why we asked our CTF Team Captain, Fullmetal, to recruit members for the team. I don’t know more about this, hopefully we’ll have some news the following week.

Apart from playing JKA, what other games do you play and what do you get up to in your spare time?

Piccolo: Not too many games to be honest, occasionally I like playing new single-player games and watch movies and TV series. My final exams are coming in June and I spend a lot of time studying at the moment, I don't really have so much free time

Vision: Apart from JKA, I'm a big Final Fantasy fan and recently I played a few co-op shooters. Guild Wars was also a game that caught my interest for a while, but I had to quit because my real life became too demanding. In my spare time, when it's not being occupied by social activities and school, I like to play guitar, watch/play football (Barca ftw!), watch some movies, TV series (gotta love House) and anime.

So there you have it. Needless to say, looks the TFFA is still a very active game-type and could certainly help anyone improve on their sabering skills, as well as meeting some cool people on the way. As such ,it is an activity I shall be taking part in a lot more often.

Good Luck guys!
