How to Handle Lamers and Such

Thanks to Jacen Aratan, Katan, Motrec, and Virtue for their guidance in writing this.

It is a great thing that we have the JAK+ to keep the peace on the servers so we may go about our business and have fun. Unfortunately there are times when a JAK+ is not on the server, and someone has chosen to take advantage of their absence. In these situations the JAS/JAP are ‘on their own’ (but not really as we will see) to deal with the situation.

First off you should take this time to review the rules to refresh you on what situations require attention.

As JAS/JAP, we have no authority to discipline those who break the rules. Doing so could possibly put yourself in trouble if you make a mistake. It is fine to make friendly suggestions to other students about their conduct, but under no means should you scold or reprimand them. Your #1 goal when inappropriate situations arise is to avoid conflict. Leave the disciplinary job to the JAK+.

When you witness a rule being broken and the offender has no intention of changing his course of action (ie it wasn’t an accident, you ask him to stop and he continues, etc) then 2 things need to happen:

1. A student needs to take the role of capturing credible evidence (recorded demos, screenshots, condumps – this will be covered below) of the rules being broken.
2. A second student should get the attention of a JAK+ to come and handle the situation. If one is not in the server then that student should go to IRC and get a ranked member. Once a JAK+ arrives and begins to address the situation you should detach yourself from the situation and let the JAK+ handle it.

If you and the offender are the only ones in the server, you should stay to record their actions. Plead, don’t command that person to cease what they are doing, but continue to capture proof of their actions.

To record evidence your tools will be screenshot, condump, and recording demos.

screenshot: In your usual setup, make sure you have a button bound to the command ‘screenshot’ (ex: bind f12 screenshot) so that you may quickly take a picture of the action. Screenshots are saved as JPGs into your jk3 directory (usually under gamedata/reload/screenshots/ if you were playing on a JA server). If you need to take a picture of the console, pull it down (~), scroll to the part you need to capture (pg up/dwn), and then type ‘screenshot’ in the console. Don’t hesitate to take a lot of pictures – you can decide which ones are the most relevant later.

condump: This command takes all the information that is in your console (all the chats that have happened, all the events) and exports it to a TXT file. To use this, type in your console /condump <txtname> without the <>.

record: Recording a demo makes a DM26 file. Basically this is a file that can be loaded in jk3 and will play back your recording. To start recording a demo, type in your console /g_sync 1; record; g_sync 0 and to stop type /stoprecord (its very helpful to use a CFG script to do this).

Once you have collected all this, e-mail it to Aron or Buzz, or if you feel it is needed, another Council Member.

To get an e-mail address from someone’s profile: go to their profile and click the link of their username. That link is to their e-mail address.

Once you have done this you do not need to involve yourself in the situation any further. In fact it is in your best interest to avoid the situation as best as you can. Do not discuss the events with your fellow students, as that starts the rumor mill which is extremely unfair to the victims of it. Please avoid reporting your opinion – just state the facts.

It is terrible that anyone may get in trouble here. When it happens, it is very tragic and sad, but it is a necessity to ensure a functioning JA for the rest of us. By handling situations as illustrated above, you can ensure justice without escalading the problem.

demos are obviosly more solid evidence cause its easy to fake a screen shot of course I my self cant get demos to work. I personally believe in the honor word court system where you have witnesses, then of course you can have beeeping conspiracies where witneses lie and someone gets framed.. well than that just sucks.

Yeah, there is always a JAK+ in IRC. What you can do is hop into the channel, and type this:

/msg HK-47 amsay yourmessagehere

This sends a message to our private channel letting anyone in there see that a student requires assistance. This command isn't a toy though, so try not to use it unless it's an emergancy.:)

I think this needs to be updated, for example:

- emailing Aron probably won't get you anywhere, seeing as how he's retired now and all

- if you want to get a JAK+ in IRC quickly, there is a new command in R4 or HK-47, though Tido would be best to explain how that works

- um, I'm sure there are other things, given we just had the rules updated and the_academy_v2, though I can't think of any atm :P

Whats a lamer?

anyone who breaks this rule:
Quote:
There is absolutely NO fighting or agressive action unless agreed upon. If someone is attacking you against the rules, don't fight back. That simply lowers yourself to their level and further irritates the situation. Tempers rise, names are called, and bans are handed out when this happens, so take the high road. If someone is bothering you tell a staffmember. If it continues, report it to a staffmember, switch to spectator or take a break to calm down.

Along the same lines, it is not allowed to attack someone while they are typing (unless the typing icon appears while you are in the middle of an attack).

Generally, it means that you can't attack someone without asking him/her for permisson (a duel), and that you should be courteous (spelling?) out there on our servers to set a good example.
This article shows how you should handle such aggressive actions by some members.
(this rule does not apply to an all out FFA, such as is being held in the fortress from time to time, all the other rules still apply though)

I hope you were kidding.

We have a "rise above it and move on" philosophy here, if you try fighting back it will just build up and when an admin finaly does arrive you are aslikely to be kicked/banned as the original lamer
