My Apology

Tido
This is what I posted moments ago on the Knight Forums, but my apology extends to the students as well. I'm so very sorry guys, I really don't know what to say other than what I say here. I don't want it to be a big mystery or w/e about what happened to me.

Quote:
I’ve written my fair share of posts now in the JA. None will be as hard to write or have as much thought put into it than this one. I have done something truly terrible and dishonorable, and I owe each one of you an apology.

While working with the IRC bots, I was trying to figure out how the logs worked and getting the bots to report the information needed for various tasks. One of the settings I experimented with was making the bot record a raw input/output of everything it saw. This made the log files of an enormous size, but that wasn’t the only thing wrong with them. When I read the log I saw this included actual written commands from the users, including their passwords when they auth’ed. I had never seen this before. The passwords for HK-47 are stored in what’s called Blowfish encryption to protect them. Yet here before me was a good friend’s (a JAT’s) password. I fixed the log output and archived the log away.

Roughly a week later I was talking with another good friend who is a JAT, and he was venting his frustrations about the Knight selection process on the JAT forums. Not understanding fully where he was coming from, curiosity ignited in the back of my head, and I began to wonder about that password. It tossed in my mind for awhile, and I succumbed and decided to see if it worked. It did…

It made me able to read the JAT forums. I was able to see what my friend had been frustrated about, and various other issues in debate there…issues I had no business knowing about. Instantly I knew I was guilty, but I had already bitten the apple. It reached its climax when a post appeared on the JAT forums about myself of a less than favorable nature. I was outraged at the post’s accusations against me and felt I was nothing that it described. Yet there I was breaking into the JAT forums; violating everyone’s trust in me and my integrity.

Later when I went to Virtue to confess what I had done, he asked me “What happened [to you]?” I’m not really sure. I had no intentions of doing anything of this sort, but then when the password was put in front of me I let my curiosity get the best of me. It was sly, deceitful, and dishonorable: things that sound so out of character for me. Yet it was me doing it. My desire to know what was happening overtook my principals, and I fell. I forgot about my friends, the trust put into me by them, and what kind of person I should be. I forgot everything. I don’t think I was power hungry. I don’t think I was hell-bent on rank. I think it was trivial curiosity and wanting to know. Doing something so tragic for something so meaningless – I don’t know if I’ll ever know why.

And so I owe each of you an apology. I have let you all down, I have betrayed you, and I have let down the JA. I have snuck around your backs for no reason better than being curious of what you were doing. I’m torn because I have now lost everyone’s trust, and I deserve no less. You each have given me so many great things and in return I do this. I am so very ashamed of it and I don’t deserve any of what you all have done for me.

I have gone to Virtue and confessed everything I did to him. The JAC have discussed it and Buzz and Virtue met with me this evening. They have decided that I am to be demoted to the rank of student. I will no longer be in control of the IRC bots, of the Aurochs (or their servers), of JA Radio, or any of the other projects I worked on here. I am to receive an official warning and never to be considered for a rank ever again. They were lenient. I should be permbanned on the spot but I guess the JAC decided to give me a little slack. I am not angry over their decision; they did the right thing. Of course I am crushed to no longer be a part of this team, but I am getting what I deserve. I am really going to miss it :(.

I hope you guys can forgive me, but it’s understandable if you cannot. I hope you will think well of me, but I can see why you’d spit on my name. I honestly have always and will always mean the very best for the JA. One of the JAC dismissed that notion. No….I…really…ment it. I really care a lot about the JA, and I poured my heart and soul into it. Ultimately that might have been what faulted me here in the end. My desire to be even more apart of what was going on may have moved me into darker areas.

In conclusion I want to thank each of you. This has been the best experience I’ve ever had online. I have learned not only tons about the game, but about being a leader, being a teacher, working as a team, new technologies I wasn’t familiar with, and many other aspects that aide me in my life. I have had so much fun with all of you, and I think you’re the best group of people I’ve ever seen on the internet. Each of you is an incredible person, and it has been an honor to say the least.

-Tido

Once again I am sorry to let all of you down, it was a damn rotten thing for me to do.

QuietGuardian expresses some valid points. I'll address them here.

Quote:
Tido accidentally put himself in an impossible situation when he discovered that passwords were logged while trying to learn and make things better.

That's hardly an impossible situation. If you find that for some reason you have access to clear text passwords you either ask your superiors what to do with them or delete these logs. There are plenty of ways to find out if these passwords are valid w/o sneaking about.

Quote:
I could see my self quite easily in this position and although I'd like to think I could have resisted looking, I am not so sure that I could have.

Tido was given access to some very sensitive portions of the academy. The stuff that JJ got demoted for is silly stuff (comparatively). The IRC channel and the website are the heart of the academy. Without either we won't be able to function as an organization. We place great trust in those we choose to handle these sensitive portions of the Academy, and we expect them to treat sensitive information responsibly.

Quote:
After I would have felt bad and owned up, this is what Tido did. He probably could have gotten away with this indefiantly had he wanted but he didn't and owned up and that takes a strong soul.

That is the reason why he's still in the Academy. I respect what Tido's done coming out like this, and he learned a whole lot about UNIX administration and the like, but administrators have to maintain a trust relationship with their users. If that trust is violated then we cannot keep that person as an admin.

Quote:
To demote one of the hardest working JAKs would be detrimental to the community, please find some other way.

I agree that he's one of the hardest working folks we have, but we cannot trust him with passwords anymore. I hope Tido will stay around. He's a great guy. He's done some good work here, he did good things for the Aurochs, and he's always fun to mess around with on TS. But due to these actions he can't be a Knight.

With all this said I'm locking the thread. If you have any questions you know where to find me.

Wow I have an enormous amount of respect for you for coming clean tido. I would have done the same in your shoes without a doubt, but I do have doubts whether I would have been able to admit it like you have done. It was just a typical human mistake, shame to see your punishments so harsh, but well done on coming clean for it.

wow man, to admist to this must have taken great strength of character.

We all make mistakes and do things which are wrong. curiosity is what makes us human, a desire to discover and understand and so u can understand why you did it (ive been overly curious myself on occasions, but the people involved have been kind enough to forgive me).

You have always been good to me, a friend and a person deserving of respect and trust.

What youve done in no way changes this, everyone makes mistakes. the difference is you came forward about yours and confessed while you could have kept it a secret which nobody ever discovered.

at the end of the day, all youve done here is still appreciated and we all respect you for it. we know that rank isnt a worry for a person like you. Dont let one mistake undo all the good youve done here.

That is for them to chose. In my eyes they are still and always will be my padawans. If they wish for me to continue to train them until they have reached a point where I can take them no further, then I will do so. If they wish to part from me and seek another master, then I understand and wish them well.

As for the other thing mentioned, Devlin, Dane, and Damon are some of the very best people I know here. I know put in the same situation they would not have made the same mistake I did. To look down apon my padawans for what I did would be very unfair to them.

Once a padawan always a padawan in my view.

Imagin If Master/padawan is like Father/son

What would happen to someone's children if the farther was punished for commiting a crime?
Would they suffer punishment as well? Of course not. Would they be disapointed in thier father? Of course. Would Thier farther no longer be thier farther? Of course not.

Tido and his padawans will (Edit: Should) have the exact same relationship they always have had, plus a variable amount of disapointment.

Squibit Of Belouve (proud padawan of the FiZZ)

Oh they can't wear the JAP tag anymore also, whoopty doo!

Edit: Just realised i didnt mention anything about Tido's situation itself.

The way I see it. If he weren't a Knight he couldnt have done this. Demotion back to student is a perfectly suitable punishment IMO. As to how we should treat him now, Exactly the same as any other student is treated... With the utmost respect and friendship.

I don't think Tido wanted this to happen.

I think he merely wanted to let everyone know the reasons why and not have to explain it to everyone over and over.

If anyone feels the need to speak out about this, a public place like this isn't the place for it. It won't help your case at all.

To Tido-
That took courage, and a strength of character that is rare in this medium of comunication and gaming. You have my respect.

I'm pretty much with Mike... he shouldn't have done it, but I think most people would have done it (presuming they didn't delete the log, of course)... curiousity is a strong thing... and hell, look at how much Mike and I got away with.. I've never even been talked to about anything, so I fail to see why he should be demoted AND get a warning... just think about it, please.

I have to agree with Mike there, I found tido to be a great knight, his done countless things for the JA, bots, and other things, I ask how meny other things has he done other than this 1 little thing, I know its probably not my right to say this, sure I'm no JAK+, but as mike said we are curious about things.

Ya ok Tido did wrong I know he did, but I still think demoting him and he not to be able to earn that right again, may be a little harsh, his never done anything wrong, in the eyes of anyone else who doesn't have access to the JAK+ forums or anything, I'm still shocked not just at what Tido did but more shocked at the punish ment.

I still forgive Tido, cus his a m8 and because I respect that he came forward and came clean, probably wasn't easy for him cus he loves being able to make JA better etc. As most do

We are only human, the best of us give in to temptation but it takes great strength of character to admit to doing something you know others that you care about will look unfavourable upon you. In my oppinion you have shown this strength of chatacter in your addmission to everyone here at the academy. I am saddened to hear that the powers that be intend to demote you, someone who has done a great deal not just for the Academy but the jk3 community as a whole. Could they not just limit your powers and implement some sort of probation period.
My other concern is for your Padawan's if your to be a JAS again what is to become of them ? are they to be punished as well ? I hope the Council take this in to consideration.
I for one accept your apology my friend and from the bottom of my heart forgive you your indiscretion and hope others can find it in there heart to do the same.

I admire the way you had the courage to owe up for it before they even had suspicions. Your apology looks sincere to me, so i'm fine with that. The only thing that does annoy me though is using your friends pass, however you said you found it accidentally so I guess that's not so bad.

But don't get too worked up over this, you messed up and it looks like you've learned from it. <3
