R2D2 is now on the JA Hall Of Fame for his outstanding efforts as both a Jedi Instructor, and the Co-Leader of the Jedi Academy Aurochs (JAA).
R2 was part of the team directly responsible for reviving the Aurochs after the unfortunate resignation of many of the team's older members. We thank you very much for all you've done for us, R2. Yeah, I've played it for a while - mostly while talking to Maher about all kinds of things on Skype. I'm a bit disappointed about how grindy the game actually is, but as long as you have good company, it's not all that bad. I tried to get in touch with a few of the JA's players, mostly yourself, Laz and a few others, but timezones and sporadic activity made that difficult. The JA guild is at least somewhat populated though - there's almost always at least 4-6 people online on Red Eclipse, so that's kinda ok, although I haven't played with anyone but Maher really.

I gotcha, it sounds like something I could have done. Unfortunately I might have overextended my availability from the get go here.
My original thoughts were to be with my main group of friends (3th, JP, Motrec, etc) from the JA. They are going to be on a PVP Server. I had the idea to be there and also be on the JA servers. I'm sure you know that trying to split your time between characters on mmos and servers usually doesn't bode well (it's possible to do, but tough, and you need a lot of time, which I don't have So I'm going to end on this note, I'll be making a character in the JA server and would like to join the Jedi Covenant so I have a character and a connection to the JA on the JA US PVE Server, but my initial focus on things will be with JP and the gang on their PVP server. My apologies for the back and forth here, I wanted to make this decision pre-gaming so that way you guys can have your roles and such picked out for those that will be dedicated to the PVE server. I'm always available for chat via email or through our posts here, write me if you have any further questions or comments. Thanks for understanding R2 and I hope you guys kick some butt out there! _______________ Be honorable, be friendly, be trustworthy. Show respect to all whom you meet. Hey there R2,

Hey R2!
Yeah, it's weird, it's not an "on-purpose" sort of thing, I've been going where the road takes me y'know? Gaming-wise once JKA died out, it's not that I didn't want to be around you guys/gals, I just had other real life stuff come up and my gaming took me in other places/directions. Mostly some RL friends and I have played and switched between EQ2 -> Battlefield Bad Company 2 -> Battlefield 3 where we're at now. In addition to this, after trying the SWTOR Beta weekend last weekend, I was sold on the game. So the first group I think of when it comes to Star Wars gaming is you guys so I "came home" As far as guilds go, I'm crazily trying to get people applying to TJA.net so different groups of people I know end up here. I'm more than likely to get my main in on the TJA US guild with a secondary in a PVP server (I've never really PVP'ed before but I have friends that are only going PVP so I wanted to give it a shot at least). We'll see what happens, hit me up if you have any other questions and I'd love to hear how you've been! _______________ Be honorable, be friendly, be trustworthy. Show respect to all whom you meet. yeah i'll definitely try out TOR when I get the chance but if i don't, I'll definitely play it when it comes out.
As far as finesse in wow pvp goes there's just more tools available to each class to counter each other (to give you an idea, My wow ui has 50 spells/macros all keybound where as the most keys i've seen in a tor video is 24). Also, an ability may not work all the time depending on the skills/class of the person you're playing against. To give you can example, I will talk about a mage's "ice block" ability and how few classes can interact with it. Iceblock allows the mage to entomb himself in a block of ice, immuning him all incoming damage. However, the ice block can be broken by a warrior's shattering throw or a priest's mass dispel. To counter this, the mage can cancel his block early and blink (which allows the mage to teleport 20 yards in the direction he is facing) to his teammate and run behind pillar to line of sight incoming damage and be healed up. If a priest is on the mage's team, the priest can life grip/leap of faith (which would pull the mage to the priest) the mage out of range and line of sight of the enemy's counters. Alternatively, the mage's teammates can prevent the counters by interrupting/cc'ing the opposing team during the mage's iceblock. If a rogue's on the mage's team, he can gouge/blind/stun/disarm the warrior during his shattering throw or gouge/blind/stun/kick the priest during his mass dispel. However, a warrior may anticipate this by fearing the rogue or cast throwdown on him (which throws the rogue to the ground) before casting shattering throw. A priest can also fear the rogue or make himself immune to the rogue's kick (a spell interrupt) by using inner focus during his mass dispel. Alternatively, the priest can simply make his mass dispels cast speed faster (as therefore less likely to be silenced/stunned) by using power infusion (which makes him cast 20% faster). These are just a few things a few classes can do in relation to how they can react to a mage's iceblock. Some classes can simple do nothing against it. For example a paladin/shaman/druid/hunter/warlock/mage can't really do anything to counter the iceblock ability itself. Alternatively, a rogue can limit the usefulness of iceblock by casting smoke bomb (which prevents the mage from being targetable inside the smoke bomb for 5 seconds) ontop of the mage's iceblock to prevent the mage from being healed up. Also, a Deathknight can make use of a mage's iceblock by casting dark simulacrum (which copy's the target's next spell) to copy the iceblock so he can use it later as an extra defensive cooldown. Also, simple things matter too. Just like in jka, being able to move your character better while performing your abilities gives you a competitive advantage. If you can move well, you'll be better able to kite, run into, around, and behind stuff. All of these things matter because you'll be better able to mitigate damage (for example players can only attack or parry/block in front of them and most spells can only be casted on players in your line of sight. This is just to give you an idea of how wow pvp is like. By finesse I mean there are just more skills, spells, and therefore strategies/teamwork needed to succeed at the higher levels. There are far more things I didn't talk about like positioning, map dependent adjustments, team compositions/synergy, trinketing, cc chaining and diminishing returns that is really important for successful pvp. i'm speaking from watching tor videos and reviews from other people who are experienced with competitive arenas/pvp in WoW.
pvp in tor is very plain. it is mostly just spamming damage and some crowd control. there is not a lot of countering or reaction based abilities that allows you to out-think someone or win by finesse. inevitably when a game is designed like that winning and losing will come down do who can do the most damage until it becomes unhealable. Open world pvp will not be fun for me at all. I pvp to play against other players under fair conditions. What I imagine open world pvp would be is whichever side has the most people will probably win. And i'm really tired of getting killed 1 v 5 and getting spawn-camped, emoted, t-bagged. I don't wanna lose to people simply cuz they have more friends that have nothing better to do. In addition, the gameplay just doesn't look very fluid. I dunno if this is because the game design is clunky or the youtube video quality sucks or the person controlling the character is inept but the fluidity that i'm used to from playing jka and wow is just not there. all in all, tor is prolly a fine game. it's sw's. it has good voice acting. it has alot of storyline options. it's a new game for the academy members to play. But ultimately, it's just not a game that I want to devote too much time to because I wanna play something that requires skill. This comment was edited by Sauce on Nov 15 2011 08:51pm. |

i dunno man. i want to play it but i only really like pvp and tor's pvp is objectively terrible.
i'd play it just so i can play with old ja friends but i don't know how long i'd stick around or if we'll even be able to play on the same server and at the same times. for sure tor brings a new opportunity to revitalize the ja, but i can't help but feel that it won't. /sadface. maybe it's time to move on! |
