I was going to stay out of this discussion, but I've looked at the entries, and it has really put my mind in motion. My vote's for number 3, but I also think we should hold off on adopting a logo until we're sure. I think number 3 looks very classy and is the kind of image we should project, but I'm not completely satisfied with any of them. Years ago there was a controversial movie called The Man with the Golden Arm that had a very clever logo. A little background--in those days the Hollywood Production Code said that certain topics were unacceptable for movies, one of those topics being drug addiction. The HPC was not law, just a set of guidelines to which all the major studios had agreed. This movie was about a heroin addict, and the "golden arm" referred both to his job as, I believe, a blackjack dealer and also to the fact that his arm, into which he injected heroin, was a gold mine to his dealer. The movie actually moved Hollywood to change the production code to say that, presented tastefully, drug addiction was an acceptable topic for a movie. Anyway, the logo for this film was a stark, stylized and rather disturbing image of an arm and hand, and the arm was "jagged" like a bolt of lightning, as though badly broken in the middle. The symbolism was not that the arm was broken but that the man himself was badly broken, the arm symbolizing his habit. Once word of the controversial film got around, many movie theaters showing it did not even put the name of the movie on the marquis the way every theater, then and now, does with every movie. They just put the logo, and everybody knew what movie it was. This was the first movie ever where that happened. The marketers did a fantastic job of marrying the logo to the idea of the film in the minds of audiences, and that's what can be done with a good logo. Now before you ask where I'm going with this: No, I'm not suggesting we adopt some horrifying image symbolizing my addiction to playing JK3 until two O'Clock in the morning. But it does make me think of a few things... Firstly, our logo does not have to be self-explanatory. In fact, most successful logos are not. Most art forms are best if they stand alone on their own merits, if each work is self-explanatory. When I read a novel, for example, I shouldn't have to know anything about the author's life to appreciate the book, nor even know who the author is. It should stand on it's own. A logo is different. The logo for The Man with the Golden Arm packed a lot of symbolism and emotion into a very simple, compact design...but if you didn't know what it is, you wouldn't know what it is. One had to have seen the advertising that featured the logo prominently. You'd recognize the Pepsi logo instantly, but if you were from Mars and didn't know what Pepsi is, the logo by itself would mean nothing to you. Many really great, successful logos have not been self-explanatory at all, but rather the image is married to what it symbolizes through familiarity and repeated association. Five out of five of the JA logo entries actually contain the words "Jedi Academy," as though to explain what they are. Unnecessary, and also cumbersome. Elegance means simplicity. My personal favorite would be something like #3, only without all the words and without the URL. No, you wouldn't know what it is if you didn't already know what the JA is, but that's actually okay. Put it all over the web site and on anything at all JA-related, marry the image to the JA in the mind of the observer. The logo should be compact but interesting to the eye. The Golden Arm logo packed a wallop in a very simple design. I like the graphical part of #3 because it's compact, simple and conveys the idea of the JA as a place that has class. I really like the lettering and the URL and think we should use it, just don't make it part of the logo. Keep it simple. I'm not comfortable with the black square. Obviously the cool black/white thing with the letters requires something in the background, but the blocky shape is jarring to the eye in contrast to the smooth, flowing, elegant script letters. This is where I get uncomfortable because I know Tido put a lot of thought into this, and I really do like it and don't want feel like I'm meddling in someone else's creative process. But I'm going to suggest a minor modification as a direction to move in. The diagonals kind of flow with the slant of the letters, and it adds a sort of illusory depth. And my humblest of appologies to Tido if I'm stepping on your toes. Advertisers have long known that a little mystery is actually a good way to get and keep people's attention. Like the Golden Arm logo on theater marquis, a simple, compact and elegant logo for the JA will be instantly recognized by those "in the know" even when it appears in isolation, while at the same time people who don't know what it is will be curious and ask what is that. We don't need the lettering, nor the URL in the logo. _______________ My signature is only one line. You're welcome. |

I'm new here and don't intend to step on toes, but I think we should extend the time and explore other possibilities. The current logos are decent, but need refinement in my opinion. Since this is a forum, you take my opinion for just that. Here are my observations... 1.)What is being conveyed...? The text is secondary. The focal point is a huge bat-like image. What do the lines signify on the bat? The JA is a nice solution, but is overshadowed by the imagery. 2.) Supplies information, but does not convey the theme of the JA. 3.) Elegant, Corporate - targets a different crowd. 4.) Clean & Simple (good), text readability could use improvement. The shape is nice, but does not drive the message. 5.) This is a cliche (Pro-Sports, Karate, etc), we need original. The old english type does not work. Where this one does succeed is the tagline, “The Place for Jedi Training” - good branding solution.
