Knight and Trainer structure revamped -doobie - Apr 19 05:01am

This won't apply to the vast majority of you, but I figure I should announce it anyway. The Council, after serious deliberations and analysis of the past few months, has decided to revamp the structure and responsibilities of the Knights and Trainers. The contents of this revamp can be found here (note, this revamp was written directly for the Knights and Trainers, so when it says "you", that's who it's referring to I also recommend you download the file and open it in a program that does wordwrapping. Browsers seem to butcher the formatting). I will post a permanent post in the comments with Frequently Asked Questions intended to clarify the changes and, well, questions you might have. This is a new chance for the Academy, a chance to shed some dead weight that has been dragging us down and preventing us from being even better than we are now. As always, VIVA LA ACADEMIA!

note: this FAQ was originally posted in the restricted access forums, so any "you's", "our's", and "we's" refers to either the Knights and trainers or the Council, depending on the context of the statement

Q: What should we do about trials until Virtue finishes the new knight trial?
A: Continue using the current trial for the batch of trials that need to be done now, only instead of using the numerical values (aka must win 3 out of 5 gun duels, etc), instead observe the whole trial and make an analysis based on their skill AND potential, not on whether they can pwn 3 top level JATs

Q: Why are the LT and LK ranks gone?
A: To elaborate on the reasons given in the text file, we feel there are "too many cooks in the kitchen". The decision making powers have been spread too thin and we feel that by bringing all decisions back under the umbrella of the council it will allow you all to focus on not only teaching and server patrol but HAVING fun, which is something that has been missing a lot lately.

Q: Did Exar and FaDed's performance in their jobs instigate this change?
A: No, not at all. In fact, we feel that Exar and FaDed have been doing a fantastic job in the roles we've given them and considering the difficulties that they've faced. The fact of the matter is, we feel that the LT and LK jobs are simply no longer needed, no matter who is currently filling their jobs. The Council thanks FaDed and Exar for their hard work and can honestly say that we are extremely proud of the work they did and hope that they can do as much good work as "regular" JATs once again. Remember, this place isn't about personal glory, it's about the community

Q: This sucks, why are you taking most of our power away?
A: We're not, we're just refocusing your power. When we created the role of Knight, we always envisioned it as someone who could help the trainers keep the peace on the servers while serving under their wings and learning the ropes about teaching. We never intended for the Knights to have as much power as some of you thought you did (and lets be honest, the Knights never really have had much direct power, despite what some Knights have thought in the past. The Knights power always has rested in their character, honor, and input). Same thing goes for the trainers. Trainers were always intended to be teachers, to recommend additions to the upper ranks, and to provide input to the Council when needed. Lately Trainers have seemed to think that they have a right to have direct input on every little decision that's made. While we understand that this is your academy too, you must all understand that every organization has to have a leader or set of leaders (aka board of directors), that it's not like we're going to start making decisions blindly that hurt the Academy. Believe it or not, but the council loves the Academy just as much if not more than you do and will do anything to make sure it's always improving. So don't look at this in the selfish terms of "I'm losing my say", look at this in terms of "Now my say will have a much more meaning." In fact, in some ways you're gaining more powers, since you're focusing on smaller subjects and can invest more of your energy there instead of having it spread all over the ridiculous political scene this place has become. Politics has torn us apart, and it is our goal to get rid of the politics so we can become a unit functioning at full efficiency again.

Q: What defines "active"?
A: There's no numerical value of "activeness". We're not going to say, "You have to spend 50 hours a week on IRC, 10 hours a week on servers, plus your classes, plus a minimum of 20 forum posts." That's dumb. What we will do is keep track of who's on IRC, who's on the servers, who's on the forums, and who's teaching the classes. It's a subjective thing, but generally if you're around, doing your job, and, if you're a Trainer, teaching your required classes, you're active.

Q: What do I do if I wasn't certified for JK3? Can I teach JK3 classes now?
A: That depends. Talk to the council and we'll figure out what you can and can't do. We would rather you not teach JK3 classes if you such at the game of course, but hopefully there's a way for everyone to teach what they know, no matter what game.

Q: What's up with the Trainer trial? That's all they have to do? I had to do a really hard trial, it's not fair!
A: Life's not fair, things change, get over it . Seriously, there's been so many different types of trials here that we all can't sit here and complain about what was the policy 6 months ago. Plus, we figure if a Knight has made it far enough to be up for a trainer trial, he or she has proven their skill and now only needs to prove that they're a competent teacher. Part of the trial is teaching a class that will actually be taught once the promotion occurs, so it requires the Knight doing the trial to know their stuff and be prepared.

Q: does this mean that knights cant have thier own class anymore?
A: I don't see a problem with it. Just get a JAT to create it for you like usual. If a JAT has no problem with you holding the off class or 2 then I don't either. We would prefer that the JAK be supervised by a JAT during his or her class though.
edit by doobie: as DJ said, we would prefer that a JAT attend the classes run by Knights, but if a JAT feels you're ready to teach a class by yourself (aka you're going to be trialed for trainer soon), he or she can put the class up and let the knight handle it all by theirselves

Q: im assuming you are going to take away frivolous admin powers from knights, such as teleport. what cmds will we or wont we have anymore?
A: The word of the day is KISS (Keep it simple stupid). I think we should leave it as is. Let's change it if we see a need to.

daid: i'm not going to go into details, but basically what has happened is that the JAK+ ranks have turned into a political and management position rather than pure teaching/recognition positions. the council never intended for this to happen, and if you talk to someone who's been around for long enough, they'll tell you that this is the way it was originally. we're just trying to get back to that. as for why the council has all the power... well, reread the section about the council at the beginning of the document. if we want to be efficient and successful, we can't have 30 people making the decisions... basically the JAKs and JATs are, as you put it, staffers in a company. This isn't a democracy and we never said it was... but you have to realize that the Council ALWAYS does things to improve the Academy, never for personal reasons (which is why it takes a unanimous vote for things to pass the council). Just relax, the JAKs and JATs still have all the power they need to do their jobs.

Squibit: reread the question in the permanent post about JAKs teaching classes... they can still teach them, we just want a JAT to attend the first class or two to make sure that the things are running the way they should, and we would PREFER a JAT to be at all JAK classes... but we don't require it.

This probably applies to ALL JAKs and i know it definatly applies to atleast 6

They are not gunna be there!

Everyone has the devotion, the activity, the capability (many other words ending in tion or ility)

to be trainers, their classes rock and requiring a JAT to be with them will most certainly mean atleast half must be cancelled.

Many many new JATs are on their way and JAKs are gunna drop,

IMO you should have kept JAKs unsuporvised teaching even if they are not about to become JAT

hi all!

I red the new rules and there are some questions popping in my mind.
Why do you think that is nessesary? If i red it right, all power is now given the Council. Shure, there are some preveligues for JAK and JAT, but the final decision is always given by the JAC. And i think thats no good process. Why do you NEED that power? As far as i can remember, i trusted all JAK+ and that didnt change in the past, even if there are some black sheeps. But, that new rules seems to me that you dont trust us. I didnt red any explenation WHY you need it that way, so please explain it.
The secont thing i dont like is the description of the JAK+ ranks. After you took over the power, its not more than a staffer in a company. Do you realy think they shoudnt be given some more responsibilities?

@Luke: laughing dont make it better. i sense that these rulechangings are are only the peak of a much bigger iceberg. and i realy like to know what is behind it.

greetings,
daid

Looks like good stuff, i'm a firm beliver in K.I.S.S. Getting back to having the "power" where it should rest, with the Council, is a good thing. If the decision making powers are spread too thin, then it seems like the council is the U.S. Congress taking an obscene amount of time to decide on something because you have to get the input of 60 people to do it. I'm all for order at the academy and control on the servers, but I don't want to have a "goof off" day with my buds, and have it anyalized by a ranked member who makes a hasty decision; then leaving anger and resentment towards that person. I'm not sure i'm putting this down right; in short. Good Job Guys!!!
