Obey the rules! -doobie - Feb 15 05:02pm

As many of you may notice, our rules are pretty out of date. They were originally written about a year and a half ago in five minutes by me after a particularly frustrating day, and so aren't really up to date with what is going on in the Academy now. But that's about to change. Two of our trusted knights, Hardwired and Fizz took it upon themselves to start rewriting and revamping the rules. Their hard work continues, but the Council has decided to appoint them to the role of Rules Revampers/Maintainers, to recognize their hard work and to encourage them to finish! Congrats gents, we expect some sweet new rules soon!

One law that doesn't server any purpose: It's forbidden to talk about our server's IP on the server list... but why? People can see our IP's on the Online Servers in both Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy, or using programs such as ASE.

I'd like to see the map-specific rules (for example, no guns in the temple) separated from the universal Academy rules. Map changes are one reason the rules are out of date, and separating out map-specific rules would guarantee that the core rules still make sense when the map changes. There might be a section in the general rules saying exactly what's allowed and disallowed in no-guns and guns-allowed areas, but have the map-specific sections of the code say what areas are no-guns areas.

I'd definitely like to see a section on the new map. Is the fort the only place guns are allowed? The bar has a sign that says "No blasters," which is simple enough, but some people interpret this to mean no dueling in the bar either, despite the complete absence of any written rule anywhere that says that. Until a JAK, JAT or JAC tells me otherwise I'm going to continue assuming that dueling is allowed anywhere unless the written rules say otherwise.

The rules should say exactly what the rules are for NPC spawning--how many, under what circumstances and anything else relevant. Right now the rules are transmitted by word of mouth. This is fine if I happen to be on when there's a JAK or JAT on who tells me the limit is six at once, but almost every night one person or another who is not of such rank starts telling everybody some rule about NPC spawning that contradicts what I've actually heard the JATs say. And for all I know a JAT may very well have been on ten minutes earlier and said precisely whatthe new rule is, but I'm skeptical when I hear wildly different and contradictory versions of the rules every night.

In the old temple map newcomers would often try to tell everybody that the courtyard was automatic FFA or that guns were allowed in the temple if 2 out of 15 people on the server agreed, or whatever, and because the real rule was actually stated explicitly in writing we could all tell them to go read the rules. It would be great to have the NPC spawning rules spelled out with such specificity.

I'm also sick of hearing people say that spawning one or two NPCs causes the server to lag. Without pointing any fingers, I'd just like to say that the people making this claim on the nights I've heard it were the only people on the server experiencing this so-called lag, so it was obviously they, and not the server, lagging. Their pings showed this to be the case. If there is a certain number of NPCs beyond which server performance degrades noticably (and I have it on good authority that point is anything more than about six), then the rules should take this into account and should say why the rule is this way.

Note to people who sometimes experience these problems: Pay attention to what doors are open when it happens. In the temple map there were area portal issues that caused a severe framerate drop when somebody opened the door to the Matrix room. I haven't played around with this map enough yet to know if there are similar issues, but if there are, perhaps they should be mentioned in the map-specific sections of the rules, just as a point of courtesy that area portal doors should be kept closed except when one is actually going in or out. Like Mom used to say when you kept opening the door in cold weather, "In or out. Don't just stand there." Again, I don't know if the new map has area portal issues, but it's something to keep in mind for this and any future maps.
