Help medical science without donating your brain! -doobie - Feb 26 11:40am

All you need to donate is your spare CPU cycles. Ulic Belouve, philanthropist extraordinaire, has set up a Folding@Home team for the JA to lend its CPUs to. What is Folding@Home? Funny you should ask:

"Folding@Home is a distributed computing project which studies protein folding, misfolding, aggregation, and related diseases. We use novel computational methods and large scale distributed computing, to simulate timescales thousands to millions of times longer than previously achieved. This has allowed us to simulate folding for the first time, and to now direct our approach to examine folding related disease."

So head on over to the Folding@Home site, download the client, and put 31419 as your team number and help the JA do something good for the world! You can check our team progress at this site, although it looks like it only updates every few hours with new members.

I've tried it running any program I have, including Jedi Knight II, and Splinter Cell (the PC version, much more detail than JKII). Never noticed a ding.

Anyways, we are definately increasing our rank in the league. We went from 5000 something, to 4000, to 3396, in really a little over 2 days. I know that 3396 is not a real competitive spot, but I just look at the increase and feel that you guys are doing a great job. I'll fix the banner/logo on that site once I can, but keep up the superb work.

This is very cool. I signed up my work computer. I very rarely need all my CPU power there.

It has been running for two days straight. Go JA go.

Been on it since sometime yesterday morning. I even managed to play JK2 while it was running without any visible loss in framerate. I do have a fast computer, and this might not be an option with alot of you. I do encourage everyone who's even curious about this to sign on and dedicate some power even for a short time during the day. An hour or two as you're chillin' in IRC, or while you're trying to catch up to Bubu in number of forum posts. Or just fire up winamp, open the display window, and stare at it hypnotically.

And don't forget to add the team number! I know you guys are competitive, so we want to get a good rank, get our name out there, and the JA becomes more popular, and maybe gets some money too! Yay!

Yes. You can shut the program off if you need a lot of CPU. In fact, I recommend doing so for CPU intensive programs, or JKII.

However, if you are like me and leave the computer on when you watch TV, go to class, browse the internet, or just do IRC...
...you really only use maybe 25% of your CPU, so the other 75% can go to a good cause.

And I've had this thing on for 5 hours now, and am at 18%, which shows you how large the computations are. But you can turn it off and resume, no problem. I switch it on and off whenever I am doing something important. But I will open a forum soon, so check over there if you have more questions.

Help out if you can! It doesn't slow down you computer that much, and gives you back whater CPU you need for yourself!

But if you have your comp on when you not around, those spare CPU cycles can really help!

And we get to leave our homepage and logo as part of our team stuff, so this'll help get our name out if we do a great job!

Edit: to elaborate a bit more, you give you CPU CYCLES to the cause, not your CPU.

If you open your task manager to look at performance, when this is on, you are always at 100% of your CPU usage. The idea is this:

[What you are doing]+[What folding@home does]=100%

Versus the normal equation:
[What you are doing]<100%

But you ALWAYS get priority for what you are doing, though I suggest that if you are doing CPU heavy stuff, you turn this off. But I am writin this, have Word open, as well as on IRC, and I haven't noticed a thing. It's business as usual, only now, by sitting my duff in front of the comp to talk JA stuff and eating Cheetos, I'm doing something good for medical studies.

And for those of you who leave your comp on when you go to class, even bigger bonus!

So, hope you guys sign up to help. It goes without saying, but I expect any Belouves to at least CONSIDER doing this, but I understand if ppl need their CPU cycles a lot.
