One of the points at our last meeting was that our map may need the council room and basement chopped off since they're unused & to save framerates. This was decided at the meeting, but is it really what the Academy wants? Post your thoughts on this please. |

is the lost temple actually underneath the rooms and stuff or does it kinda branch off from the academy? if it does, it could be moved underneath the main oart of the academy. then the respawn point could be in the basement and you jump out into the lobby room. _______________ Personal body guard to teh 1337 Jacen Aratan! i dont really know what my specs are, but they arent that bad i guess. i was thinkin that there could be a remodeled academy maps for the servers, and then a bunch of special maps for classes that would be changed for each class. like hux's movement map but more for each skill. _______________ Personal body guard to teh 1337 Jacen Aratan! first of all, i LIKE how the map looks.
but see, the first thing the guys do after respawn in the lost temple section is running over to the old parts! and THIS way is really too long, i think. i have two possible solutions: a) delete the respawn point. the addiational parts wont get used very often, but dont harm too much b) bring the lost temple section closer to the old parts. i REALLY like the balcony part of 2nd respawn. it's soooooo cool beside that things, i think the JA map is one of the best ever (close to ffa_bespin). don't spoil it with water (there is no swim animation!!!). the only thing i could imagine would be a mediation room or/and a bar... but that's just an idea. oh, and PLEASE, don't be offended derelict... but did you caulk everything? because i somehow get cliping errors at some parts of the map that COULD come from not caulking. would explain the droped framrate too... i hope i didn't scratch your mapper-honour now oh, almost forgot: AMD 500 MHz TNT 2 Ultra 32MB 256 MB PC-100 RAM between 10 and 15 frames. i tell ya, that SUCKS _______________ Aeth S'kray *June 2002 +September 2003 |

Yer thats a good idea from kalla, rotate loads of diffrent maps. When i first joined the academy i was in my element with the map it was so cool but as time progreses im getting border and border. 768 mb ram ATI Radeon 9000 Pro i run jk2 at 1280*1024, 32bit, details at max and i get an average of 70fps. no probs with that. yes! i agree with the faster doors idea. the big doors are annoying sometimes when you use speed or if your ping is a bit high, you bang into them before they open. and the idea of a 2nd matrix sounds good too! no more crowded dueling! i agree the basement is not used much... but instead of taking it out, maybe find a way to use it. for example, it's a great place to use for mine movement training. believe me! one last thing. NOOOO! Please don't change the map. It is awesome. I don't have any problems so I am being selfish. I have a quick question: Do those rooms slow down one's fps if that person is not in them? I'd love to know.
I love the "basement." Just the other day I was giving a tour that ended in the basement and then we ended up just hanging out and dueling there. Pretty soon everyone on the server was down there. It was like an after hours party in some hole in the wall nite club. I mean hole in the floor. I've never been to the counsil room though Oh yeah system specs: AMD Athlon XP 1600 256M RAM 32M VIDEO MEM. I have a Pentium III 800MHz, 256mb pc133 ram, and a Geforce2 GTS 64MB. I run in 800x600 with minimal details/textures. I could run the map with higher resolution and detail, but I keep settings low in case of crowded rooms. Framerates are fine for me in all the rooms except the spawn room. I don't know why that room would be slower than any others, but it is.
If I were to make changes, I would eliminate the spawn room and spawn people in the little antechamber between the spawn room and the old part of the map. The lost temple complex could be turned 90 degrees so that the hallway with the hole in the floor is where the spawn room is now. Alternatively there could be a new door in the side of the antechamber so that the lost temple stays in the same orientation. Whatever function the podium and obelisk in the spawn room were supposed to perform could be fulfilled by putting those in the bottom of the lost temple. Some people have asked for an area involving more jumping. I think it would be great for the pillar room to have more pillars of a variety of heights and surface areas so that people could duel while jumping all over them. |

I like your work Derelict, there are some things I would change about the map. I decided rather than spending any time whining about what I do and don't like, that I would put my money where my mouth is and offer up both some suggestions, and a map of my own for consideration.
I like the lost temple, it's the one room in the academy that seems to be style over substance. It's not totally practicle, but it give a nice break from function only rooms. Now on to my system specs: AMD Athlon 650 mhz 512 megs pc133 sdram 32 meg geforce 4 mmx card I don't recall the other specifcs at the moment. I see framerates as high as 60's when on the map, but also slowdowns that bring framerates down to under 20. Part of my problem is an older monitor with a lower refresh rate. In my own mapping experience I found that the big problem with my map wasnt the large rooms, it was the spikes in my spike room, they added a huge load to my system. I found that using the green slime from artus mine actually ran faster once all it's sequences loaded. For some reason I also see a significant drop in frame rate when in the courtyard. I haven't been able to pin down a reason for that. One other thing that comes to mind is the color of the light in the courtyard, it comes over my monitor with a kind of blue hue that is hard on my eyes for some reason, giving the courtyard sort of an unreal look. The last thing that I can think of is the layout. If people were playing ffa or tffa on the map, it would be a great layout, but as a school and training center the map tends to take a little to long to get around from one room to another. I noticed that the JAT's tend to use the teleport feature of the JA mod to get around the map more quickly. Good for them Those are my things with the map at this point. I hope that those are helpful to you in your work. Lastly, since this is up here I have a suggestion. Like I said earlier, I decided to put my money where my mouth is and make a map for the academy, I know some of the other guys are working on maps too. I'd love to see us students get the opportunity to have our maps put into a sort of rotation, perhaps change the academy map once a month, so that everybody's map gets used, and everybody that puts forth the effort can get some feedback on improving their designs. I think a map rotation like that might help to keep the academy fresh. I think that varying the maps would perhaps offer up environmental changes to refresh player skills. I think you can play too long on one map, and get so used to it that you have trouble using other maps. _______________ Death is only the beginning. |

Pools are not funny like nc said (i think it was nc) there are many aspects of the game that we cannont train in well due to certain locations. And by pool i didnt mean somewhere to just lounge around there are much things to learn about movement in water as there is on ground. _______________ - CoRRUPTioN |

Hey all.
I brought this topic up through DJ because I'm very perplexed about this whole situation with the map. Let me explain... Few months ago, people started complaining about the map size; it being too small for the growing JA (student wise) so I asked dozens and dozens of people of what they would like to see. The got what they asked for, sans an extra courtyard, which now in retrospect I'm glad I did not add into the current build of the JA map! Few weeks following of the v2 release I spent some time on the servers just observing and taking part in the fun. It was during this time that I had many people come up to me and tell me how much they loved it and how the extra room/space was very much appreciated. Not ONCE did I hear any complaints about peoples frames, I had complaints about lag in "matrix" room but hey, if you get 13-15 people dueling there, you're bound to get a frame hit. Another thing I'd like to address is the "build a bigger courtyard!!" deal. Some of you whine about the frames outside in the courtyard yet you want a much larger one!? I don't understand this logic. Thank god I didn't invest the extra time into building that second one like I planned. Weapons training issue is very easy to address, the Jedi Academy tutors people for saber duels. It has been like this since the beginning, THIS is why you don't see elaborate weapon training rooms etc. One thing DJ forgot to say in this post is for people to list their computer specs. I would like to know your pc specs, it will help me in the building and optimizing process. Many of you probably fear that I'm pissed off because all my work is being reverted back to the old size of the JA, well don't! My main concern is for the people (according to my personal experience in the servers and through numerous e-mails) that have no problems running the map with moderate to high frames who enjoy the extra rooms, because I'd hate to see the majority get screwed over because a few people still run Pentium 90s... and then face an angry mob. I would also like to add that the lost temple and council room were not added just to be "fancy." They were added because they provide A LOT of room for everyone and mainly for training purposes. Someone mentioned adding rooms where you can practice force jumps etc etc. This is WHY these HUGE areas were added, practice there, oh and about the not being able to jump through the hole in the floor from the temple, that takes practice too! Please, I encourage all those people that spoke to me directly on the servers and through e-mails to voice your opinions on this issue, I'd hate to take away these areas from you guys. My system specs: 1.2 Gig AMD Athy 256 Ram ATI Rad. 8500 (had Gforce2 GTS 64 meg with similar results) JK2 Settings: 1280x1024 32 bit all options MAXED OUT I get solid 85 fps inside the JA map. Drops to 70-75 in courtyard. Compared to today's systems, my rig is not a gaming monster. Thank you. Oh and one last thing, if you're trying to be cute and funny, posting things like add pools, bars, secret hideouts, rocket areans, etc. I would like you to hold off on that, I'm looking for serious replys. -DC _______________ I build the walls that keep you within! |

Something like the pillar/platform room in the jedicouncil map without a fatal drop would be useful.
The basement as you put it is pretty but pretty redundant also. I have only been there a couple of times. |

I think the space could be better used for training purposes... There are still many areas of the game still missing a room of their own. These rooms are both very impressive, but they do lack in use somewhat... If Dom is up to the task, I say make more useful rooms in their place. If we just erase those rooms, we may as well use the old map. Anywho, that's my opinion. |

The lost temple (guess that's what you call it) and the pillar room are the only two rooms that my framerate is at it's highest. I use the basement to warmup and pillar to duel, considering there's someone else in there. As for matrix, you can usually see me behind the observation glass, because when I duel in matrix, I usually am killed by lag. So, I say something's gotta go, but, then again, I get to install me new graphics card this weekend, so, you can also count me neutral. If it stays, so be it. If it goes, we'll just have to get used to it. But anyway, GL on your decision. Wheee _______________ Captain Barkeep. |
