“Sweetheart…” First Lieutenant Mike Nick Kiel’s mother coughed blood. Her black hijab stained at the torso with blood that gushed out of the wound running like a river down the linen cloth and collecting in a pool of blood her feet. An assassin’s crosshairs and been aiming for the teenaged Sunni Cybernetic Hunter but the boy’s mother had gotten in the way of the round that had been fired. Mike’s tears flooded from his emerald green eyes.
The First Lieutenant’s body was racked by spasms of grief-stricken sobs.
“Please don’t go mom!” wailed the Shadow Squad second-in-command, as he felt his mother’s face one last time. Her chocolate-colored skin was growing clammy and was blanching underneath the vial of night she wore, Black, the color of predatory animals such as the panther, a big cat that had once roamed the jungles of Earth. Black was the color of elite night fighting special ops. Mike’s mom had been one those.
Mike removed the veil of the hijab brushing back his mom’s straight black hair back gently as if he helping her comb it. Lieutenant Colonel Nancy Kiel words came out in gasps. The group of six soldiers that made up the Shadows gathered the injured women.
“All of you—” Lt. Col. Kiel’s chest heaved. “Do not give—“She seemed to be growing by minute as a result of blood loss. “Into hate, forgive the lost soldier that—“
“Don’t die mom. Don’t die!” Mike wailed. Mike’s Christian friend, who was also his commanding officer, knelt beside him placing his hands on the wound, pressing down firmly.
Due to Captain Sharroock’s quick thinking an hour later the torrent of blood had stopped. Captain Sharroock raised his hands they where soaked in blood. Sliding his hand long his right upper thigh the young soldier of god gripped the ice-cold handle of his kabar unsheathing the blade. First Lieutenant Kiel’s emerald eyes went wide; his mouth fell open he had not the slightest inkling what his friend was going to do. Captain Sharroock’s eyes met First Lieutenant Kiel’s. Captain Sharroock jabbed the thumb of his free hand over his shoulder toward the kitchen. Holding up his kabar Taav mimicked the turning of a knob with his free hand. He then placed the kabar over imaginary knob. Taav turned the knife over and over in his hand. Taav then placed the knife’s edge against his bare left arm.
First Lieutenant Kiel nodded his head, he understood. Captain Sharroock stood and with the echo of his combat boots striding quickly to the kitchen. Within a few minutes Taav returned the tip of his kabar glowing red-hot.
Mike’s mom lifted her head to look at the young that approached. Mike rose to his full height of eight-feet two inches tall. He pivoted on his heel and taking to steps left to clear the way for Taav. Taav crouched next to Nancy Kiel. Placing the piece of metal on the wound. Nancy gave a blood-curtailing shriek of pain that seemed to fill the whole house. Smoke curled its way up to the ceiling, the skin around the wound crackled, as it was burnt shut. As Taav rose he noticed Mike’s expression; eyes locked in place, jaw set, his brow wrinkled because of his jaw. Taav pointed to himself. Mike shook his head. He pulled his berretta out of its hip hostler with his right hand. He made a cutting mention across his neck with his left index finger. Taav glanced left, looking a window. Outside blackness, the curtain had been closed for the day, sealing off the sun’s light. The predator that had struck without warning was about to be cornered and eliminated by

other more lethal predators, nocturnal hunters whose most powerful weapon was their brain.
Captain Sharroock cleared the window with ease. Shattered glass crunched his booted feet. The Shadows second-in-command was all ready in a prown position.
“Hands where I can see them, now!” the foldable stock of First Lieutenant Kiel’s M-20A10 assault rifle was pressed hard against right shoulder.
“Get up… slowly” Kiel hissed, the red beam of light that was the weapon’s was aimed directly in between the now cowering but yet defiant creature. The being was short only five feet tall with charcoal grey skin and big black eyes.
“I had been aiming for you young soldier, enemy of my Lord Lucifer” the creature sneered, showing its pointed teeth.
“Dajaal worshiper I kill you because you have brought pain and suffering to my father’s house. Also know that I will find and wipe out your seed if they do not repent and become followers of Allah without resisting we devil dogs.”
“Satan will prevail!” shouted the sniper. The fire of anger smoldered in his eyes. “You all think that since your false religions have united that you are capable of destroying us all” the sniper cackled. First Lieutenant Kiel eyes narrowed, the creature could not see them because of the First Lieutenant’s helmet. Kiel pushed the M-20A10 with bayonet/kabar against the alien’s jugular vein.
“Hold your tongue snake, lest it speaks anymore blasphemies against the one true god!” “Hold my tongue, the puppet of false god says, you will not have the pleasure of taking Jortus Viper alive young leatherneck.” Jortus smiled, you are the son of a whore, you shall beg for death when my compatriots are torturing you, son of a whore.” Mike lost his temper at that moment hitting the bone thin living corpse with a sideways blow with the stock of weapon. The albino skin covered skeleton crumpled the ground.
Excuse me First Lieutenant Kiel sir, a komodo dragon-like alien stepped forward, as was common with Da’n’orens before they ate their next meal; Assaloth picked blackened decaying pieces of meat from between his serrated teeth, at hearing his squadmate’s thought communication Kiel up his hand for silence.
“I will end the cockroach’s life myself” Kiel’s chest heaved as sucked air into fill his lungs. Kiel did not need the extra oxygen he was hording as a consequence of exertion rather the intense anger that was trying to override Kiel’s natural distaste for sloppily killing an enemy.
Why should I not cut this creep apart? Kiel thought himself. Kiel closed his eyes; First Lieutenant Kiel saw what happened to his mom in his mind’s eye for second time. As she was gathering up plates the round had hit Mrs. Kiel in the abdomen. First Lt. Kiel saw his mom reach around from behind him to retrieve the plate her son had maliciously cleaned, two seconds later a translucent capsule, filled with white-hot plasma shattered the glass window in front of the dining room. Glass shards sprayed everywhere. The round kept moving traveled directly toward Kiel. Because the First Lieutenant was viewing this memory in slow motion, he seemingly had enough time to dodge the round. The reality of the situation was that the round had been moving at such a velocity that First Lt. Kiel had not the time to do so.
The second-In-Command of the Shadows felt something wet flowing down his side.
“Kama’sh watch this spineless creature until I get back.” First Lt. Kiel ordered. One of the seven foot tall reptilians march forward.
I will watch the living lunch for you sir. Bacteria infested drool dripped from the predator’s mouth as his forked tongue flicked out tasting the air.
“No eating Kama’sh” said Captain Sharroock as he walked toward the circle of marines. First Lt. Kiel walked the opposite way holding his hand firmly over his side.

“Are you alright, soldier?” Captain Sharroock exclaimed eyeing his friend’s wound. First Lt. Kiel took his hand off where he had been shot. There was a small hole only an inch wide and located in an area of fat on the First Lieutenant’s right side with a small amount of blood seeping out.
“Just a flesh wound sir” the First Lt. grunted. Captain Sharroock nodded, his green eyes meet First Lt Kiel’s blue.
“May I have word with you sir” The soldiers walked over to an area near the west wall of the house, well out of earshot of their squadmates. First Lt. Kiel leaned against the wall. “Sir with respect, I think—.” Taav was watching his squadmates guarding the prisoner.
“My answer is no Mike.” First Lt. Kiel’s mouth fell open. Captain Sharroock reached up with his left hand to scratch a dry spot on scalp. The captain’s helmet dissolved his skin, revealing dishwater blonde hair, cut to stubble on the sides and back with the hair little longer on the top.
“That sniper has attacked my family he deserves to die” Captain Sharroock answered matter-of-factly, “Do you think this easy for me, Mike?” Captain Sharroock reached for his flask tucked into a pocket on the left side of the armor protecting his chest. He unscrewed the lid, taking sip of water.
“God knows I agree with you Mike, but to kill this man without trying to gain intelligence that could be vital in the outcome of this conflict is very risk at best, foolhardy at most.” Captain Sharroock offered the flask to his friend; the First Lieutenant took the flask, tilting his head back. The clear, cool liquid fell from the overturned flask in the First Lt’s hand. A small portion of the soldier’s helmet soaked into his skin and went into his open mouth cascading down his throat, he handed the flask back to his commanding officer.
“Taav let me double tap this infidel, he’s nothing more than an underling of some bigger fish.” Taav crossed his arms over his chest, he held flask in his left hand.
“As I said before Mike,” There was a pause Captain Sharroock jerked his neck hard to the left, sounds of bones popping could clearly be heard. “Why should this man be killed before information can be extracted from him?” the First Lieutenant balled his fist to help himself contain his growing rage.
“Sir, can I Kill—“ The First Lt. closed his eyes for seconds, inhaling and exhaling slowly which did not seem to calm the enraged twenty year-old.
“—I can interrogate this sniper?” Taav put his right hand on his chin as he thought.
“Correct Mike.” With a metallic click the First Lt. detached his assault rifle from his back. He turned crouched and crept to a place wear he could get a clear shot at the sniper. Looking down the scope his rifle the First Lt. dropped to one knee took careful aim, putting the sight right on the sniper’s head.
“Mike, stand down.” The first Lt’s finger started to depress the rifle’s trigger. The first Lieutenant closed his right eye. At that moment all other events that were

happening in the world around the young soldier seemed to slow to crawl. All ambient noise; crickets chirping softly, the barking of dogs in the distance, and the shouts of his commanding officer fell away. The marine—the Cybernetic Hunter— the Shadow could only hear his own breathing, very slow almost nonexistent. The soldier’s finger squeezed the trigger even more, to where the gun would almost fire but yet.
Mike, don’t do it the First Lieutenant’s left arm relaxed, He knew that “voice”.
Mom.
Be the better man, my son. The First Lieutenant blinked as he took his finger off the assault rifle’s trigger.
Come to me, my little one. The First Lieutenant rose at hearing his mother’s call. Spinning on his heel First Lieutenant Kiel attached his assault rifle to his back, marching with Captain Sharroock to where his mother still lay.
“My son, you proved yourself the better man.” Kiel’s mother’s icy blue eyes revealed the tiny ember of life that was flickering still within her body that was slowly going out.
“Allah has blessed me with a loving husband, as well as strong and brave warrior son.” Kiel crouched leaning forward and kissing this mom on the forehead.
“I Love you, mom.”
“I am sorry Mike” Captain Sharroock placed a hand on his friend’s left shoulder.
“The scum bags that planned this will pay dearly” Mike clenched his fist, his jaw set, and his eyes ablaze with the fire of rage, Kiel felt a slight tug on his left leg, Kiel glanced down.
“Is mommy going to die?” asked a small figure that wore a headscarf and stood gripping with one of her minuscule arms a teddy bear. Tears were forming in her blue eyes. The little girl who was only four years of age reached up and gripped her brother’s left hand tightly as he was on his knees. Kiel could sense the muscle tremors that were being emitted by his younger sister’s scared body. Kiel picked his sister up by the waist when had let go of his hand.
“Mommy will be fine, Naomi” Even as he spoke the First Lt Kiel hoped that he would not be made a liar for the words he had spoken.
“Do you promise?” Naomi leaned her head against her brother’s shoulder. Kiel swallowed hard then answered in kind,
“Yes Naomi I promise”

The First Lieutenant leaned against the outside wall of the house, his left leg was folded backward pressing lightly lunarroidium reinforced brick wall. His oak-like were folded against his chest. The first rays of sunlight turned the sky pink.
“Mike?” Mike snapped to attention. Taav came into the first Lieutenant’s peripheral vision. The commanding officer of the Shadows stood a two inches behind and four feet the left of his second-in-command.
“As you were.” Mike’s body returned to the stance it had been in.
“Assalamu Alakum, Mike.” The First Lieutenant turned his head, put his arms at his sides then raised his right arm in a crisp American-style military salute.
“Semper Fidelis, sir.” Captain Sharroock returned the salute and responded, “Ooh rah!”
Captain Sharroock folded his arms oak-like arms across his chest.
“You almost disobeyed my order to stand down Mike.” The First Lt. glanced out his friend out of the corner of his eye. The First Lt. spoke with a tinge of anger in his voice,
“Why are doing to me my brother, I only wanted to protect my family your extended family,” the First Lt. pointed at his blood brother.
“Would you not do the same thing to protect your family.” Taav’s green eyes narrowed. For a moment the two eight feet tall Martian marines stared at each other.
“I would defend my family, just as any soldier would.” Taav shook his head in disgust.
“We the enemy still shooting?” Mike bit his lower lip, he was angry and the biting of his lower lip was all he could do to contain the rage that was bubbling up from deep inside himself.
“Sir my family was in danger.” Taav rebuked his second-in-command strongly.
“Damn it Mike, you’re your sinful pride will be the end of you, there was no more threat.” The First Lieutenant uncrossed his arms and balled his left fist, snorting as he did.
“The threat is alive sir” Mike spat the words.
