Well luck has failed me again and it seems I am now on possibly my second motherboard failure. I won't know for sure though until I can get to another box and test the components.

Basically I opened up the box to blow around for dust and unplugged power and IDE cables. Put everything back together and...nothing. Screen doesn't show a thing, no beep, no boot. Fans turn on, LEDs on the mobo turn on, HDD spins up, even the gfx card gets warm like usual. But the comp just stalls there and doesn't even wake the monitor up out of its sleep mode.

Anyways so I'll be MIA for a while as I get this resolved (either by fixing this or just building a new computer). I'll drop in and check up on stuff as much as I can.

eh, yeh you can always upgrade RAM thats true, but you can often buy sticks of it in pairs for a good discount on buying two. But AMD boards usually don't benifit from paired ram, so I dunno.

I really just wanted to say: :( your computer is broke, :) you fixed it (go dads!) see ya soon buddy ;)

go for a good mobo (socket 939, or itll be obsolete as you buy it), 512 ram (1gb has relatively little benefit, esp if youre on a budget, just get a good solid single stick, corsair, crucial are good solid buys), get a hitachi 7k250 HDD, PATA, SATA has no benefit in its current revision. reuse everything except maybe the psu. 250 is very very small, look at cases, some come with psus, aim for 350 or better. steel cases cost less, all you need is a standard atx one, just get something which has decent airflow.

i totally agree about getting a top notch mobo, you can build on top of it for years to come hopefully. ram though, i think you need more than 512, with as many proggies as we like to run at the same time as playing JA, the more ram the better IMO. in some ways i would argue more important than the vid-card (you've been happy with those graphics for this long right?!?! :P) because the ram is gonna make everything smooth running together, IRC, MSN, TS, JA, etc. the vid card is only gonna keep your FPS up in JA. that's about it for my recommendations.

on a personal note i splurged on an SATA Raptor drive because i like the 4 second system boot time. as much as i power my pc up and down it's nice. (in retrospect i should have gone for the big ones, but oh well. i wanted budget AND performance :P)

edit: where are you then you goon!?!? get on irc or ts or something! ;)

Crazy. So my old man and I are talking on the phone, and for shats and giggles he says 'Hey take out the processor and put it back in again!' 'O-tay.'

Well whadda you know, the damn thing cranks up like nothing ever happened. W.T.F. lol. Anyways so I'm backing everything up like mad fully expecting a meteorite to come crashing through the roof and taking the damn thing out. Now the only thing outta whack is my dad walking around with this goofy grin like he's the Dali Lama of computers. Still gonna keep going with the replacement PC plan as I need one anyways, but for the moment Tido is back in the saddle!

If your budget is really that tight, skip it, but if you can at all afford it, get 2x512 MB sticks of whatever your mobo supports. I've seen XP SP2, fully tweaked gaming machine, no unnecessary junk running, eat up 1 GB of RAM and another 1.5 GB of swap in just one evening of LANning.

Sorry to hear that man. :( And if you are making your own comp, I suggest the AMD 64. I have heard 3000+ is good. I currently have the 3500+ and it rocks. Good luck bro.

Most cases I've seen completely satisfy my needs for drive bays. 3/4 1/2 is fine, and room for 2-3 HDDs is fine. Just about every case I've looked at meets this without any problems.

power supplies that come with cases tend to be fine, they dont have any nice features, ut they do the job and are cheap, you can always replace it if you need to at a future date. what else do you need as regarding drive bays etc?

I guess we can start with a case. Stardard ATX sounds fine to me. $ is priority but I'm all about bang for the buck. The problem with most cheap things is they are worth only about what you paid for them. I'm really not into the asthetics of cases or anything like that. I just want it to have good airflow, maybe a fan or 2 (or the ability to add them later), and not force me to dig around the back for USB2.0 or w/e.

Ok so I'll take some more pain and shoot for a new power supply. 350 minimum eh? Where in the wattage would 'practical' fall? 400, 450? Also I've heard that most powersupplies that come with cases are a bad idea, is this true?

send over a budget and ill knock up a list if you like.

Well I was hoping to be in a slightly better $ situation when it came time to build a new comp, but I guess I don't have that luxury.

So basically the project is going to be build the new comp in stages with everything I can from the old comp.

Old Comp (Dell 8100):
Intel P4 1300 Mhz
Completely unknown and bizare mobo (which is probably broken)
256mb PC-800-45 DDR RAM
Maxor 40gb 7200rpm HDD (IDE)
GeForce2MX 32MB PCI Express Card
Samson DVD/CD-R/RW/CD-ROM Drive
Dell 3.5 Floppy Drive
Dell 250Watt Power Supply
SB Live! Value Sound Card (PCI)
Dell 56k Modem (PCI) - hardly used

This will be my first @ home build job, so it should be quite the learning experiance. Just wish it wasn't so hurried now :(.

This is what I'm hoping to get away with:
New Mobo (Asus? AV/8?)
New Processor (AMD? 64? 3000+?)
New Case (something that does NOT look like it was on Star Trek, front ports = cool and cool = cool, cheap = cool)
Possibly new RAM (cause of the new mobo, PC800 isn't exactly top-notch, so probably a gig of what the mobo supports)
Current 250W power supply
Current 40g IDE HDD (but hope to upgrade to a nicer SATA in the future)
Current Optical Drive Combo
Current Sound Card
Current GFX Card (the GeForce2 struggles, I hope to get something much nicer soon but right now it's not a priority)

This way I could get a working computer back, be on my way to a nicer one, but do the whole upgrade thing in strides. Thoughts? Suggestions? Insults?
