Janus' Staff Foundation Class: 2005 Edition
In order to pursue a more successful Staff Saber Career in your JA life, you need to start off with a solid foundation. Although simplistic in nature, for 8 weeks, students will undergo piece by piece of what you can do fighting with the Staff Saber. Every 2 weeks will introduce new aspects of the Staff and how to duel with it. This will conclude by putting the pieces together in the final 2 weeks.

SYLLABUS:
PART I: Wielding The Staff
Week 1 & 2 - Half and Full Animations (w/theory & discussion)
PART II: Using The Staff
Week 3 & 4 - Basic Combos and Preanimated Moves (w/theory & discussion)
PART III: When and When Not To Staff
Week 5 & 6 - Janus' Seven Deadly Staff Sins & Intro to Advanced Moves (w/theory & discussion)
FINALE: Putting It All Together
Week 7 & 8 - Final Exam (Culmination of Weeks 1 - 6)

If you'd like a jump on the knowledge or just learn more, please feel free to visit the Holocron, specifically the Staff section.

FAQ

Q:
Is the Final Exam Mandatory?
A:
The first run through, I meant it to be, but only a few showed up. This will be fixed by stating that the Final Exam is MANDATORY to receive passing marks for this course.

Q:
What if I miss a week?
A:
When the syllabus above states those topics will be discussed during those weeks of the term, I mean just that. If for some reason you can make it to week 1, but can't make it to week 2, the student will know the lessons for the part. IT IS ADVISED however that the student seek myself, or anyone else on the attendance list for that designated week to review and stay familiar with the lesson taught.

Final Remarks:
At the end of each lesson I will put on this thread the attendance class and what was covered. Any discussion, any remarks, everything and anything for a lesson will be put on here for all to view. I look forward to teaching this class and helping the future staffers of the JA out as much as I can. Please seek me out if you have any other questions.

3/29/2005 - Basic Combos Review and Preanimated Movements, Week 4

Attendance:
JKXIII
Zarith
Tigerclaw
Yellow 5
Dan
Desann

What We Did: Today for class, we started off with reviewing the 3 Basic Combos of a Staffer (listed in thread below), and we then moved onto the Preanimated Movements.

Preanimated Movements are defined as animations that a Staffer will do upon pressing the correct sequence of two directions while holding attack down. You start attacking and pressing a direction, keep attack held down and move into the next direction on the list. A Preanimated Movement will be two different directions. There are only a few Preanimated Movements programmed into this game, they are as follows:

First Direction/Second Direction
Starter/Finisher
Basic Attack(holding still),Right - Staffer performs the basic attack then spins saber around clockwise from upright to around the back and to upleft.
Up,Right - Moving forward with and overhead then spinning around clockwise from upright to around the back and to upleft.
Upright,Right - Striking to your Upright with a diagonal slash and then spinning around clockwise from upright to around the back and to upleft.

Downright,Right - Backward Upright slash into spinning the saber quickly around your waist animation.

Downleft,Upleft - Backward Upleft slash then moving forward and twirling the saber in a forward leap step counterclockwise into a Downleft diagonal slash.

Left,Upleft - Left sweeping slash across the front into a counterclockwise overhead twirl sweeping forward into a Downleft diagonal slash.

Next Week: Janus' Seven Sins Of A Staffer, Week 5

What We Did: Today for class, we went over the 3 Basic Combos of a Staffer and practiced them...TO DEATH!

Basic Combo 1: Hold Up, or Forward on your keyboard while alternating in a timed manner the Left and Right keys. You are alternating what looks like the Upleft and Upright Half Animations.

Basic Combo 2: Alternating Left and Right Half Animations in a timed manner. This is the Staffers version of the Scissors.

Basic Combo 3: Holding the Down or Backward key on the keyboard while alternating Left and Right. You will be executing the Downleft and Downright Half animations in a timed manner.

Great class everyone, see you next week!

3/15/2005 - Half and Full Animations, Week 2

Attendance:

What We Did: Class went over what exactly a Half Animation and Full Animation are. Half Animation is pressing a direction on the keyboard and pressing attack once. The saberist will then swing the saber once and stop. Full Animations are done by doing what you did for the Half Animation, but keeping the direction and attack pressed down. You'll repeat the swing, but in between you might have a "Filler" animation, which is distinctly unique to each direction. We then went over the different directions and practiced them. Below are the directions used for Half Animations and a jot of theory next to each. Notice the Basic Attack is included, but you hold still and don't move. The other 8 directions you are moving though. I recommend practicing by holding Shift on the keyboard down (defaulted to make you walk) to practice the movements of the Full Animations. Once you get it practiced enough, then take away Shift key and Run and practice it. Also note, any references to Basic Combo are for references when Weeks 3 and 4 start.

Half Animations & Theory

Basic Attack
Up+Attack(once)
Down+Attack(once)

For those 3 above, the saberist makes an arc of sort when swinging. Quick note is that it's good for aerial attacks, you'll catch their feet and do damage to them.

Up+Right+Attack(once)
Up+Left+Attack(once)

Making up the two pieces to Basic Combo #1, the Saberist will start by swinging from the opposite back of the direction pressed, and end up ending the swing with the direction pressed. For example, Janus swings the saber once to his Up+Right. The swing starts at the back and left and finishes with the saber pointing forward and right. Back = Down, Forward = Up.

Left+Attack(once)
Right+Attack(once)

Making up the two pieces to Basic Combo #2, these are side swipes. Great for using with someone coming at you with overhead swings.

Down+Right+Attack(once)
Down+Left+Attack(once)

Completing the 3 Basic Combos, these two directions make up Basic Combo #3. Saberist may use these swings for oncoming aerial attacks from the side. As with the versions moving from Back to Forward, Saberist will start swinging from Forward, and end up going Back, but with an angle to the swing. Example, Janus swings Down+Right+Attack, the staff starts at his forward and left, but will end with the saber down and right.

For pictures, I strongly recommend consulting the holocron article about staff saber to see what it will look like.

Full Animations & Theory

Repeating the swings, all of the Half Animations apply to these Full Animations in theory, I'll go through the "Fillers" in between as a sort of Theory.

Basic Attack
Up+Attack(held down)
Down+Attack(held down)

Holding these down gives the Saberist a bland repeat of the Half Animations. No fillers here, but you can give your best impression of a crazed staffer charging his opponent. Besides silly intmidation, not very useful.

Up+Right+Attack(held down)
Up+Left+Attack(held down)

Repeating one of the two swings listed above, the Saberist will head in that direction (unless steering with the keyboard and mouse). Both Fillers are sort of a skip jump sort of animation, but at varying speeds with each repeat of the swing. Again, walk the practice swings, then run the practice swings.

Left+Attack(held down)
Right+Attack(held down)

I feel the best use of "Fillers" come with the Left and Right Full Animations. Swinging Left over and over again produces a slow but strong waist-high swing that makes a protective circle around you. Right's Filler does a spin over your head and resets back to your waise. The saber in the meantime is active and cutting from head to waist on the way down. Great swings to be used for Full Animations.

Down+Right+Attack(held down)
Down+Left+Attack(held down)

For these Fillers, the Down+Right has you tossing your Saber in the air, catching it and repeating the swing. Sort of defensive, but not as effective as a Down+Left, which has a nice zig-zag over-the-head swing.

That's all she wrote on this one, again, email me or IM for questions you may have regarding any of the above or if ye like to get together for a private session to review.

Note to JA:

Class was posted thinking I can do this, bad news, I can't. Holidays + Work Schedule Shifting + Busy busy = No Janus Able To Support At The Present Time.

Furthermore, the class will start up again, under 2nd edition rules shortly after the new year begins. Moving to 3rd shift leaving me working 12am to 8am. What does that mean to you? Making a noon class time is probably not going to happen for me, because I'll be sleeping or in the process of going to sleep.

Motrec or any other JAT+ able to do so: I'm hoping things work out, but as of this time, I'd like this class removed from the schedule (I'd give it the DISABLED tag, but I want the schedule to look clean for classes actually happening. Thanks
