Actually there's probably even more reason for germany to not be as patriotic. Germany has been around longer than the U.S. but they were always more of a tribal region. They weren't really a unified country until after the U.S. had become a country, and don't forget weren't one country again until 1989. Having different flags come and go for them possibly wouldn't give them the same feeling waving it as does Americans when we wave our flags. (sorry for the history lesson)

As for the whole non-patriotic Germany thing I believe that's a holdover from the post WWII era. Germany wasn't allowed to have an army, amongst many other things for fear of having a German nationalistic resurgance. Those sentiments are probably held over until the present day.

Sorry for my late comment.

I am English. And I feel for america, what happened was tragic. But not only that i feel for all the other nationalities that died in the terror attack. But what i must say is that everyone must remember people grieve in there own way. Some men and women break down and cry, others swallow hard and carry on. People talk of changing the world, picking up litter, being nice. I agree with this, but lets face it.. who here really does that...No one.. unless you pay them to do so. I see the waving of the flag (right now in england it's "Racist" to show the english flag) and the speeches on attack of freedom... this is just to touch the hearts and raise the spirits of the broken wings left behind by the unlawful carnage. I will remember 11th Sep 2001 and it will be marked down in history as one of the majour events since the turn of the century. And i'm sure there is more to come. But lets also be thankfull with the amount of lives that were saved.. How many men/women went home that night, grasping their loved ones crying with relief that they are able to see their families again and watch their children grow, but also having to face with the horror of the loss of friends/colleges/companions. Buildings & landmarks can always be rebuilt.. hearts can not.

altough it's now sept, 12th I want to say something too.

first of all: my toughts are for the relatives and the guys who knew the victims. THEY suffer, and we should be quiet and give them the best wishes.

the thing with the flag: I think I'll never understand americans, but actually I've never been there yet. so tell me, why are most of you that patriotic? i just don't get it :/
Imagine I would "wave a flag"... I'm from germany

and to carnage. i agree with him that we shouldn't talk that much, but do something. but i have to admit that i don't buy food fot children in africa as well... :( after all i don't really know why! So let's improve the world with small things... be nice to the guys on the servers, even if they're from china, russia, irak etc and maybe send your old jeans to afrika instead of throwing them away

have a nice day

It seems to me that in a local article, it shows Bush as a sort of traitor, for supplying our doom. Long time ago he supplied bombs to Hussein blah blah blah

I hate the news.

First off I'd liked to reiterate some of the statements already made. All Americans shouldn't be held accountable for the opinions of the American media. It has been a growing trend for our media exploit anything they can in their quest for ratings. Unfortunately the tragedy of Sept. 11th has been no exception. I have found that for me the best thing to do is just leave the television turned off. I would also like to say that I find this new found patriotism(flag waving as you call it) unnerving. A year and two days ago you could have walked through my town and count maybe 15 flags. Now every house waves the red ,white, and blue. I agree with Carnage that this money would have been better spent helping others in need. On to my next point. I believe Compassion. Passion=suffering Com, prefix =with. Some Americans may not care about people in other countries, and yes some don't even think about the fact that other countries have been dealing with terrorism for many years. I for one however do feel for all the peoples of the world, regardless of their country of origin, who's lives have been affected by all the senseless violence that seems to plague our species in these dark times. And lastly Big Ben wasn't attacked, nor was the Eiffel tower, nor any other countries national monuments. And until they are you will never know the fear of uncertainty that all Americans must have felt that day. I live just 20 miles from a nuclear power plant and when I heard of the attacks on the radio I was a little more than worried. Furthermore, if it was any other country that was attacked on that fateful day you can bet your sweet asses the USA would have been there to help no questions asked. Ok I've ranted enough. Take care and God bless.

Carnage is right that waving a flag around doesn't really accomplish anything for other people. But its more a sign of unity for us. The United states is not like a lot of countries since we don't all come from the same the same part of the world or share one cultural heritage that goes back 500+ years. What unites us is our ideals and we show our unity with the symbols of our country like the flag. And I saw a commercial today about how on 9/11 the terrorists sought to change America forever, and they succeeded. It showed video of a street and homes all with flags on them. We're not united by common ancestory, cultural, or religious beliefs, its our idea of America that unites us in times such as these. The Star Spangled Banner didn't start getting played at sporting events until after pearl harbor. I haven't heard anyone ever call that stupid, So a lot of people wave the flag, you don't want to that's fine, but you'll probably get a lot of looks if you don't show respect during the banner at your next sporting event

personally i think that waveing a flag shows your american spirit, our country, new americans, adn old americans, and every american in between is united under the banner that is the stars and stripes. and i personally will never forget that day. not becuase i had a relative inthe building, becuase i didnt, but becuase it is the single largest loss of life resulting from a terrorist attack in recourded history. I will never forge twhat those terrorists did to america, and they wont either, becuase they will have the star spangled banner (all 3 verses of it) branded onto their buttoks once we catch them, if i have any thing to do with it.

WAVING A FLAG AROUND AND SAYING WE WON'T FORGET WON'T HELP!!!!!!!!! STUPID STUPID STUPID PEOPLE!!!! How about showing how good this country is by not buying a flag but by buying some kid some clothes in africa, contributing money for a cure for cancer, or frigging go outside and pick up some trash. LAZY PEOPLE HANG FLAGS

The whole flag waving American CNN/TV media circus/concerts/touchdown for freedom nonsense I can do without. This should be a time for mourning and rememberance, not patting ourselves on the back saying what a great nation we are. Let the dead rest, please.

INO & Preadator I can understand your position. Just remember that what you see on the media in no way reflects the thoughts and feelings of all Americans.

Today is a day of grieving and I am sorry for anyone that lost anyone one year ago or ever in their own personal view of what a tragedy is. And if you're tired of it and don't want to hear about it anymore, there is a simple way to do that. Don't read the posts like these on websites, don't watch cnn or the other programs more than likely having 24 hours of the stuff (I know I won't do that since it seems like a ratings grab and the networks to tell people HOW they should grieve, its more of a personal thing). No one is truly forcing you to look at the stuff. And if Big Ben or any other landmark had a hijacked plane flown into it causing 3,000 lives to be lost, there would be grieving and sadness for that as well.

I knew someone who died in the trade centers. I wasn't too close to him, he was my uncle's best friend, but I met him once or twice and I know his kids pretty well. It really helps me put it into perspective the amount of sadness I felt that week was too big to describe, and I wasn't even related to this man. I can only hope that it wasn't too much worse for those directly affected by this tragedy. When you think about the fact that there were 3000 other people who were killed as well and that many other people had to go through what I went through but to a much larger degree it really makes it stick out and saddens me that the human race can't try to make something better instead of trying to destroy ourselves.

I apoligise for my recent behaviour on irc, but frankly i jus wanna stay neutral and forget - all the 9/11 stuff within the last 24-48 hrs has been beatin me up...(alongside other things...)

Because they killed over 3,000 people... and destroyed a major landmark of not only America but democracy and capitalism (stuff that, I'm assuming, they have where you live)... not to mention that people of other nations died as well. I agree it's sad that when terrorism happens in other countries most people don't notice, but this isn't just some minor accident... It destroyed a big part of one of the world's major cities. I have a feeling if they had taken out Big Ben in London or the Eiffel Tower in Paris we'd be commemorating today as well.
