Hey gang, one of our great PHP (and Java) goons JavaGuy has been working hard on his email server notify script thingamajigger. Check it out. This is perfect for you kids who are on the go and need to check up on our servers and is quite useful to boot!
Here's how it works: 1. Send an e-mail to notify-academy@sammckee.com. 2. If there is anyone playing on the KS, DJ or Gamecity server, you'll get a message back saying how many people are on each server. It doesn't check the classes-only server. 3. If there is no one playing, it will keep checking every sixty seconds for half an hour. If anyone else logs on during that time, you'll get an e-mail saying how many people are on each server. 4. If you send it another e-mail before the half hour is up, it just resets the timer to zero, and you get another half hour. 5. This is the really cool part, but I need more people to use it to find out if it has bugs or not: If nobody is on any of the Academy servers, but someone else is also in the notification queue, you'll get a message telling you that someone else is awaiting notification and wants to play, even though nobody is actually on. Try this with a cell phone that has text messaging. It's way cool to be able to go do something else while waiting to play and get paged when someone comes on. VERY cool, JavaGuy! |

For the record, the "meat" of this application is not in php but--what else?--Java.
I'm seeing a few SMTP errors in the log, and I'm wondering if it wasn't trying to send messages to multiple user at once. ;p I've added the "synchronized" keyword to the function that sends out the e-mail, which I should have thought to do in the first place. Thanks for everyone's patience if there are a few remaining bugs to be squashed. If this utility is popular enough, I might add features to let each user customize it to his own particular uses (for example, you might want to request notification for other servers and even for other Quake-engine games). _______________ My signature is only one line. erm...slight problem...i sent a blank e-mail (no subject and no text) through my hotmail account to the system and it hasn't e-maild me back yet. At the same time, i checked with qtracker to see who was on - 4 ppl on NL at the time.

Can you get pathfinder to send you an e-mail when someone logs in? I couldn't find such a feature in it.
What I was thinking when I wrote this is that I don't want to have to be at--or even near--my computer while I wait for notification. I want to be able to go upstairs to read or even down the block for a beer and have a message sent directly to my cell phone when someone logs on. This utility does precisely that if you have a cell phone with text messaging (most do nowadays). That's why I wrote this. _______________ My signature is only one line. You're welcome. |

Nice donne. It's not so easy to do something like that but..... Why inventing things a second time. I use pathfinder to see who is on the servers without login on the game. I've got every detail of the server updated permanently. When you double-click you can directly join that server too. Only point 5 is a new and very interesting thing.
