Sorry, got caught up in LotR fever for a sec. This post in in response to the comments made at http://academy.jediknightii.net/news_detail.php?f_id=219 concerning student/JAC relations...

Holy Jimminy Crickets Batman! Doobie made a big ol' post!

First off, Ulic, I know nothing I can say will make you shake off the emotional scars inflicted in the story you just told... but I can try. I know I'll get heaps of flack for saying this, but in the 7 or so months since this place has opened, your posts have done more to inspire me to keep this little spot on the net going. I never comprehended how much of an impact we have on people, providing an escape from reality and teaching "real life" lessons along with the latest DFA/pull/backsweep/0wn4ge j00 moves out there. I'll admit, I have a lot of doubts about continuing to work on this site... I've even considered (and even had a conversation with DJ, who seemed to share my feelings) early in our existance of shutting it down and saying "Well, that was fun," or stepping down and letting other people run the show (which a lot of people may think I've done). But there's a reason I haven't. I love this site. I've been with it longer than any of you (making me oldbie number 0!), it's my baby, and one of the most successful things I've ever done in my life. So I'm not going anywhere...

But along those same lines, it pains me to see all of the complaints and misgivings people have. I agree with DJ in that this place is no longer the Jedi Academy, but is now the Trial Academy. That pisses me off to no end. The trials were meant to be something fun for people to strive for, not for people to get obsessed, angry, and offended about. But they've not only done that, they've also worn down the Council and the JATs to the point where most of us don't remember what was fun about JK2 in the first place. I know all of you have noticed this, and it probably explains the negative vibes I get around here lately. Unfortunately I don't know what to do about it just yet.

However, I do know what to do about the "rift" between the JACs/JATs and the JASs. Email me, at an account I check obsessively, my school account. I've been loathe to give it out until now, but I feel it's the easiest way for people to directly contact me with concerns It's cdubois@bu.edu. I trust you all not to take advantage of it and send me crap that has nothing to do with anything, but if you have an honest concern, complaint, or just want to say hi, feel free to send me an email. I don't want our students to feel like they can't talk to us. For those of you who have talked to me in IRC, you know that I'm a pretty good-natured guy who enjoys a good laugh (especially at my own expense). So don't be afraid that I'm going to be offended by something you send me. Send it to me, I love criticism, it's the only way we can grow. You will, however, have to understand that I'm a full-time college student and so it may take some time to respond to your email, but I will respond.

This Academy, believe it or not, is a form of representative democracy. The Knights, JATs, Avalon, and Silent Whisper were chosen because DJ and I felt they represented the "good" of the Academy. Some of you may disagree; that's your choice. That's why we allow 99% of comments posted to stay posted, even if they're negative. We're not about censoring. However you all do need to remember that this isn't a country, this is a private institution. DJ and I are the leaders, followed by Silent Whisper, Avalon, and the JATs. We listen to input and put an extraordinary amount of it into practice, but we have minds of our own as well, ideas of our own, and plans for the Academy that may conflict with the ideas of others. In those cases our plans with be implemented. That's just the way it is, as draconian and fascist as it sounds. But trust me, we don't make any decisions lightly and without fully considering as many points of view as we can. We're trying to be everything to everyone, but it's impossible. Just bear with us. If you can't tell, this place is constantly evolving into something new and (hopefully) better. Sometimes we make bad decisions; be patient with those decisions. I feel that we've earned the right to take those chances, since without me and DJ at the beginning, and the rest of the Council and JATs since we opened, there would be no Academy. There is really no precedent for an Academy like this in the gaming world. We're forging our own new territory, and trying to enjoy ourselves along the way. We just hope you're enjoying the ride with us. Because believe it or not, you're a part of something semi-historic on the Internet. It may not make the front page of all the weekly newsmagazines like the Sims Online did, but we're in a similar (although smaller) world, building a new community and sustaining it. And I'm damn proud of it, blemishes and all.

Well, now that I've put you all to sleep with my rambling, hopefully you were awake enough to get at least a small insight into how the Council thinks... because although everything I've just said is with my own words, I'm positive the Council feels the exact same way I do. We're here for you, I promise. Just extend your hand to us and we'll shake it like good old friends.

well, this is unrelated to the current theme... but to most of what other people have been saying, I agree too. It applied to me for most of it as well :P
The day that the academy shuts down is the day that jedi knight has lost its appeal. When the academy shuts down, there wont be many places, for someone (like me) to go and train against other people, who all have their strengths and weaknesses, and not be scared about cheapmoves all the time.
Just recently, I went to another server (i was trying to play against dgviper) and i happened to come across a clan's server. One guy, who was recruiting, only used grip and the lunge! They'd grip me, shove me in the garbage container and try to squish me. Then, in any duel with them, they would only use the lunge!
now before I get too of topic, all that I am trying to say is, keep the academy alive - it provides a great place for people, of any skill, to play in, to learn, and to have fun.

On that note... Trials
I said it earlier, and I'll say it again. It does not matter what rank you are, it matters what you know. Unless something has changed, you do not gain any special benefit by becomming a jak, of a jman, or a learner. If your an Initiate, its cool to stay as one. If you are extremly desperate, e-mail some JATs or JACs(preferably JAT), and ask them to schedule a date for a trial. If they say NO, then NO! wait. Paitence is a virtue. If you must, go to Ulic's profile and read his comments on patience (im a horrible speller, just tell me how to spell it correctly and ill edit it, or if your a JAC edit it for me plz :P).
As doobie said, if you have any problems with anything, ANYTHING, e-mail him, or one of the JAC's. When in doubt, go to the IRC channel, and ask someone. Post it on their profiles, or e-mail them. Where can you find their addresses? If your logged in, scrol down to the bottom of the screen, what do you see?
my point exactly. Remember, this is a place to learn. Respect others, and they will respect you. One way to think of it;
Treat others how you would want them to treat you.
If you keep that in mind, the Academy will go far, and so will you.

Now, before i get too off topic, and before i just ramble on and you all fall asleep... WAKE UP!
now, thats all i have to say. If you get confused, read it again, then ask me what was i talking about? remember, if you have any Questions, Comments, Snide Remarks, Email one of the council members. May the Force be with you

I think part of that problem comes from students always wanting to go to DJ and Doobie. I think part of that comes from them being the first ones and Silent and avalon coming up in the ranks. Just by looking at the comments on their profiles students seem to ask dj and doobie about things more often. In my eyes they are all of equal say and just with different talents and tasks to perform

Ah well...I just think that you and DJ seem to have more influence over the decisions in the JA. Now I think of it, the student's don't have as much say as they should, but that's just my opinion. Perhaps we could have some opinion polls on the site?

JJ.... point well taken, and it's something to be worked on. However, the Council is pretty much equal, but just as in the movies Yoda and Mace Windu are the "leaders", so are DJ and I (I'm Yoda of course :))

Well massa, there is ONE thing I have to disagree with you on. That's the part about you and DJ being leaders, followed by the rest of the JACs.

Doesn't that completely defeat the purpose of a council ? You may as well bring back the JAL rank and give it to yourselves. At least you'll be letting people know that you are the leaders.

Isn't a council about equality, and discussing things, and coming to a decision ? Not "Massa and DJ tell the rest what to do". That's one of the faults in the JA today. You guys need to spread out the power, and I think things would be alot smoother around here.

Hey Guys.
Massa, that was incredibly well put and it really proved a point here. Especially about the part of the Academy turning into a Trial Academy. I mean really, the Academy was meant as a learning experience for JK2 and most of all, a place to have fun. Trials aren't everything, and it isn't a nessecity here in the Academy. They are simply there to test your mettle based on what you have learned and JATs/JACsm should/nt be constantly bothered, based on Huxley's post from a few days ago. Take it from me, when I first asked for a Learner trial after I felt I was ready, you never heard from me again until the JATs were willing to give them out. Enough from me was said, I'm out, Later.

Hey guys. Just want to add to the list. I joined the Academy very early and i'm very happy with it. Indeed there are some people with problems with respect and authoritie, but I love the Academy and I think that nearly all of the guys here do too. I also want to use this comment as a huge thanks to the JAC's and JAT's for realising this place. Especially DJ and doobie. You're great, even though I am allowed to go to the internet 5 hours a week, all the time is spend here. YOU ARE ALL TERRIFFIC (and good for my english). Thank you again. (hehe, made it short, I knew I could do it).

well doobie: I've never had one complaint about this JA yet, and I'm not going to. I know you guys have a hard time controlling this place, since I had some experience in this kind of shit as well. Any problem I had so far has been solved by simply waiting. I know everything will be solved in time.

This JA is by far the best and nicest thing that has ever happenede to me on the internet and in a game. I wanted to oin up in the very beginning, but it was full at the time. So, I joined up 3 months ago, and havnt been dissapointed since...

You guys are doing a great job! And about the ranks: I'll just wait till it is my time. I won't go bothering you guys with me wanting a higher rank. Patience is a good thing..

Iniquity, don't stop playing. As far as getting trials, it doesn't hurt to ask a JAT if there on a server. Just remember to always show respect when doing so. You only have to ask 1 time, politely, and I if they say no,well then wait for another time. As I said a higher rank isn't going to make you a better or more important player. We're going to respect you no matter what your rank(well at least I will, I can't speak for every one).

Also keep in mind that Aayla and Hux have a class set aside just for trials, cleverly named,Hux and Aayla Trial Class. Jacen, Skyler and LA Magra give trials on gamecity quite often as well.

In the mean time....
Study hard and test well
Good luck with your trials...

i dont agree that not playin is the best thing to do, since i have dueled wit you i c you have been playin for a while, you can 1)join the trial class, 2)find a time when 2 jat's or a Jak arent busy on the server. But either way, you dont have to stop playin. May the Force be With You

Alot of you dont know me, a few of you have seen me around, but havent really talked to me, but the few people i have gotten to meet and talk to are the reason i entered this academy. As me and my friends say, "You coo people." I dont have to deal with the pricks on the publics that find fun as beatin you in the cheapest possible way. All the people i have come in contact with are good honest people.
Ill copy the everyone else and say its not about rank, cause it isnt, i've been ready for my j-man trial for about a month now, and it just isnt that important that i get a trial, sure i will get one and want to be knight eventually, but its the fun i have just messin around on the servers that i enjoy, once and a while picking up new techniques from someone who owns you 10 times in a row, then you finally win a duel, maybe even start kickin there ass? but how to win a duel isnt all i found in the JA. Its the as many have said the life morals many, esp Ulic provide. His work on patience and not rushin for a trial should be practiced by everyone. In my personal opinion, trial should only be done durin the set class time, but that isnt here nor there. Important thing is remember is just a game, work hard, but dont get aggrevated when everything doesnt go your way. Good luck, Happy Holidays, and May the Force be With You.

Howdy friends, I just want to recount the story of a guy we all know, and love (well at least I love him). Sometime back in July our friend finally convinced his better half that JK2 was something he just couldn't live with out. You, see this friend of ours is a bit of what you would call a "Star Wars Geek",and since George Lucas never returned his calls about a part as a Jedi,he figured JK2 was the closest he'd ever get. So its about a week later, he's gone through the SP version of the game, and he decides to go online and try out this MP stuff. Keep in mind he has never played any game online before this. After 2 days of getting pulled and backstabbed to death he decides he's never going to play an online game again, at least not this one. So it's back to SP,for another 3(boring)days. Then he gets the urge to look for cheats, and ends up at a site called jediknightii.net. As he's looking through the links he see's a link that simply says Jedi Academy. Intrigued, he clicks on the link to find that it's actually a school for JK2. A school full of people like him. People that want to learn to play this game online, and do so in a fun, friendly, assfighter free environment. And hopefully people that may even have a little "Star Wars Geek" in them as well. He reads over the goals and rules of this school, and he likes what he sees. So its time to sign up. He clicks the sign up button, the anticipation is almost overwhelming, he waits 3 days for the page to load, lol...

And there it is "Sorry we are not accepting applications for students at this time please try again later....Noooooooo!!!

Over the next several days he checks the site religiously, and finally the post he had been waiting for "student applications are now open...Yea!!!

From the first day I entered the Academy I was in love with the place. What a fantastic idea. A community full of people with similar interest all working together to better develope their skills in a game they all obviously loved. I was immediately impressed with how quickly the people on the servers offered to help me on my first day. People like Jacen, Aayla, Haemon, Datheus, the list goes on and on, just made it a really fun place to be. Every one treated every me with a great deal of respect, and that's why I'm still here today. Those were the days, when the only ranks were student and trainers, and we all respected each other equally, and we all had FUN.

As far as the ranks go, it's the people that make the Academy great not their ranks. There is nothing more annoying then someone asking "what's your rank?". What dose it matter,it's just a title, it doesn't make me any better than any one else. If any one doesn't believe me just duel me sometime. I'm a Jman and I'd be willing to bet that most of the Learners and Initiates can put me down in a duel. (although that's all about to change, as I'm approaching the game with renewed vigor and dedication, and soon a decent connection) Don't get me wrong here I'm not saying the ranks are all together a bad thing. I just think we shouldn't put so much focus on rank alone.

In regards to a rift between the students and the staff, be it JAK, JAT, JAC, I don't see it. And if you feel there is one then you're probably the one creating it. I've never had a problem I felt I couldn't take to them. I've even been known to take some of my personal problems to some of them in my occasional drunken rants. I feel all these kids do a great job with this endeavor. They all give up plenty of time from their already full lives to give us a truly special and unique place to play and learn. Keep up the great work guys.

I know this place isn't perfect, and all the people here aren't perfect either. However you've got to admit it is a very special place, and it full of some pretty interesting people. I know I've met a few, I've made some friends along the way as well( at least as good a friends as you can be with some one you never really met), and I'm looking forward to making some more.

Wow, I really can say a whole lota nothin can't I =)
Thank you all for tolerating me, and giving me the opportunity to be part of something so unique.
I look forward to growing with you all, and Ill see y'all around.

As always
