Every year on the 25 April Australian's and New Zealander's the world over commemorate Anzac Day. What is Anzac Day, on the morning of 25 April 1915 soldiers from the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (the ANZACs) landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula on what's now called Anzac cove. After landing and discovering they had been droped at the wrong position by the Royal Navy, found instead of flat beach they faced steep cliffs that were constantly under bombarded from heavy enemy fire, with a dug in, well organised, well armed, large Turkish Army determined to defend their country. After 8 months and 8000 dead with little to no ground gained, it was decided by the British high command that the campaign had failed. Under the cover of night the ANZAC's withdrew to an awaiting fleet without the Turks being any the wiser. The first Anzac Day dawn service was held on April 25 1923 and has continued ever since to mark the day where we remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifise in the name of peace. The ANZAC story reminds us of the pointless futility of war. But it is a day to remember those who served our countries and the world in the cause of peace and freedom. They risked, and too often lost their lives so that we could live in peace. My thanks and respect goes to all service men and women, past and present. Keep us safe, uphold what you believe is right.
