Staff Foundation Class
Opening Statement: The foundation to anything that one wants to learn is the most important first step. The purpose of this course is to supply ALL the basic fundamentals to the Staff Saber. Students will have fun and learn in the process!
Topic: For each week, a certain topic will be covered in class. It should take roughly 30 mins to teach the topic, and the last 30 mins would be to practice the topic. The four topics would be the following:

Week 1 - Basic Animation Swings
Week 2 - Basic Combos
Week 3 - Preanimated Movements and Specials (aka The Seven Deadly Sins)
Week 4 - Final Exam

-Animations Swings will focus on the 8 cardinal directions along with attack being pressed once with a direction, and with attack being held down with a direction.

-Basic combos will go through the basic set of combos a staffer can use.

-Preanimated Movements works with the animations predefined for the Staffer and the combination of directions to execute them. The Specials are the keys pressed in conjunction with one another to execute the Specials.

-Final Exam puts it all together, and they get feedback from the instructor.

Extra Info: Punctuality is a must in order for everyone to get the most out of the class. At the end of each session, I will post who attended so that students may ask questions of what lessons were taught if they happen to miss but are still interested in learning. Showing up for all 4 sessions is a plus as well although to be eligible for the Final, you would need to show up for at least 2 out of the 3 classes. There are no Prerequisites for this class, all are welcome!

FAQ

Q: What if I miss a week but want to learn still?
A: Hunt myself or a class member down that attended the class. Myself or the attended class will look to help you out. Also, any of my Padawans will be able to assist you regarding any of the first three weeks you've missed.

Q: Do I automatically become a Padawan after completing the Final Exam of your Basic Class.
A: I've been asked by a few if that's all it took to become my Padawan. The answer is a firm No. My Padawans DID pass the class, but their personality and eagerness to learn and be honorable to those around them in the process is why they were chosen. Don't focus on being a Padawan, focus on learning and gaining the knowledge of the Staff saber.

*Special Thanks to Rin for typing up the notes for this class. Most of what you see below was from his notes with just a smidge of editing from my part. Thanks again Rin!*

What we covered: Preanimated Movements and Specials (aka the Seven Sins of a Staffer).

Preanimated Movements are preprogrammed animations that Lucasarts put in that are caused when a Staffer attacks with a certain direction, keeps attack held and as the first swing animation ends, moves into a different direction from the first (keeping the same direction held with attack = a Full Animation from week 1).

I used to teach Preanimated Movements as just that, but with this week I started something different by introducing the concept of Right Enders and Left Enders. Rin in his notes to me reminded me of how I taught it this way, and thus I think I'll keep it in here from now on when I teach this lesson.

With Preanimated Movements requiring 2 different directions to work, Right Enders are Preanimated Movements that start with a swing in one direction, and then end with a direction involving Right. The same can be said for Left Enders, with their Preanimated Movements ending with a Left.

Ultimately, there are two different Preanimated Movements for Right Enders, and two for Left Enders. There are however more ways to do one of the Right Enders, so it may seem Right has more Preanimated Movements, this is not the case when you see that the different ways of doing the one Right Ender result in the same animation. Enough jabber, here's how to do the Right Enders

Right Enders
BA(Basic Attack), Right
Up, Right
Down, Right
UpRight, Right

Whether you start with a standing still basic attack, up+attack, down+attack, or a diagonal upright+attack, keep attack held as those swings finish, and then move your movement keys to Right. Attack will then execute with Right the Preanimated Movement. For that group above, the staffer will spin back around clockwise and end with a right strafe swing.

DownRight, Right

The ever-so-famous diagonal right slash turns into a waisthigh behind the back spin of the staff around the staffer.

Left Enders
DownLeft, UpLeft

With the movement of a V like direction, the staffer will start out with a DownLeft diagonal swing. Keeping attack held and going into Upleft results in a Preanimated Movement of the staffer going onto one foot and spinning the staff high above the head. The staffer then comes down into a diagonal UpLeft swing to end.

Left, Upleft

A strafing left swing turns into a fluid head high of a spin around into a diagonal UpLeft to finish.

Preanimated Movements are very "show" like, meaning they give off a sense of flashy showlike animation. They "look" good, but don't necessarily give a staffer a great position or cause more damage. These should be used wisely.

Specials (Sins of a Staffer)

I want to emphasize that the Specials a staffer can do are uncontrollable and really don't give a staffer a lot of advantage. Spammed a lot, they are not considered honorable in a duel and in my own opinion don't show that one has skill, just that they can combine buttons together on a keyboard simultaneously. Nonetheless, I went over them with you all so that you can recognize them during a duel. These are sometimes known as Katas.

Sin 1 - Spinning Kata
Hold Altfire (right click by default), then press Fire (left click by default).

Sin 2 - Blade Barrier
Crouch+Forward+Attack

Sin 3 - Forward Butterfly
Up+Jump+Attack

Sin 4 - Left Butterfly
Left+Jump+Attack

Sin 5 - Right Butterfly
Right+Jump+Attack

Sin 6 & 7 I will not post. I consider them an exploit of the staffer and wish not for others to do them.

With this being the end of the lessons, next week (or the week after pending on the schedule of things) we'll have our Final for Session 4. Stay Tuned...

First off, I'd like to thank Tigerclaw for subbing in last second like he did. It was not necessary, nor was it required of him to do so, but this is something he did volunarily. Before reading the rest of this post, please make sure you head on over to his profile and leave him a thank you if you haven't already.

The alarm was set and I got to bed at a reasonable hour. I woke up an hour before class started and was ready to rock and roll for this weekends sessions of Beginners and Advanced. When I sat down at the comp to get settled in and ready, I noticed that my Cable Modem lights were not all on. Uh oh... is about all I could get out. I tried resetting the modem and router on numerous occassions, and it was about 5 mins before class started that I actually broke down and called the cable company. First words on the message, "We're sorry, but we're currently experiencing an outtage for the Streetsboro area, uptime has not currently been determined yet." At this point I could no nothing but headbutt the closest person next to me, which happened to be my mother downstairs and proceeded to start drinking early for the day. Nothing says good morning like a stein full of Killians....

In all seriousness, I wish there was a way to let you guys know ahead of time I wouldn't be there, but no internet = no internet, so I was in a BOHICA situation (Bend Over, Here It Comes Again). Needless to say, I was still jonesin for some star wars goodness today and did two such things with the world of star wars. I share them now to end my Saturday story for you guys (whether you chose to stick with me this far in this whopping huge paragraph, it was up to you, but for those still with me, thank you).

1) Played the single player Jedi Academy (I got as far as 1 mission into the 2nd wave of missions after Hoth. Having not played the 1 player version before, and I was ready for some JA today, it fit the situation. I missed my staff saber though, all I had was a single medium stance saber until recently. I tacked on Red stance for some variety. With my internet back, who knows if I'll pick it up again, but it satisfied my JA needs (no, beer doesn't satisfy JA needs, beer satisfies beer needs).

2) Being pissed off, I wanted to spend some money. A few friends and I went to Best Buy, and picked up for 20 bucks, "Lego Star Wars The Video Game". With the announcement of the sequel coming out, and hearing nothing but good things about this first one, and since it was a greatest hits, I took the bait. For those that want a simplistic great star wars beat-em-up of lego proportions, this is the game for you. My friend said it best, "Sometimes Simplicity Simply Reigns". The way you use the Force powers and how it tells the stories of Episodes 1 - 3 (Original Trilogy will be the second game) in such a quick fun fashion, it's hard to say, "Y'know what Ryan, this game actually did rock." And I'd stare at ya, tip my stein to ya, and say, "Aye! Told ye so, now get me another brew!"

So there you have it my friends, my adventurous Saturday without the 1nt3rW3b....

What we covered: Basic Combos and dueling each other with nothing but! We also discussed how to chain into a combo if you accidentally repeat a swing.

Combo 1 is your offensive combos and is a repeat of UpRight and UpLeft all the while holding Attack down (Left Click by default). Pick a direction and press and hold attack. As the swing finishes bounce to the opposite direction. In this case, UpRight+Attack(keep held) and as the swing finishes go to UpLeft(you are still holding attack at this point). Upright, Upleft, Upright, Upleft...etc and so forth. This is your bread and butter combo for a staffer.

Combo 2 is more of a neutral combo. You do not advance, nor do you retreat back, but you sweep side to side. Just like above, this is done by starting with either Left or Right and bouncing back to it's opposite. Left+Attack(keep it held!), Right, Left, Right etc...

Combo 3 is the defensive combo and realistically never used in a duel. Combo 1 moved your forward, Combo 3 moves you backwards. DownRight and DownLeft are your directions to bounce back and forth.

I think the above is the best description of what I taught. I just cut and pasted the Combo instruction, but please let me or any of my Padawans know if you need help with these.
Thanks!

What We Covered: Last week was initially the first week, but with a weak turnout and the time change screwing with everyone, I made that a "Bye" week. So, this week we started once again with Half and Full Animations.

Half Animation = One Attack Press + One Direction Press. The Staffer will perform a movement and swing in that direction, but only once. There are 8 Movements and a 9th Stand Still for BA(Basic Attack is moved into this category becauses its technically one swing of the saber, although still)

Full Animation = Press and hold attack and a given direction to repeat it over and over again. What qualifies an Animation to be Full instead of Half is that when it repeats, there is a 'Filler' Animation preprogrammed in to happen to transition one swing to the next. There are only 6 Full Animations. Up, Down, and BA are excluded due to the swings not having 'Fillers' when they repeat.

Once we covered each of those topics, I had the students beat the crap out of each other using ONLY Half and Full Animations. This included not being allowed to jump and focused the staffers on staying on the ground and using what they were taught.

Overall a good class, next week starts us off on Basic Combos.

What We Covered: Preanimated Movements and Specials (aka The Seven Sins of a Staffer)

Preanimated Movements are the combinations of 2 specific directions that trigger the staffer to do a PreProgrammed animation for the staffer. There are Right Side and Left Side Preanimated Movements.

The execute, click attack + the first direction. Keep Attack held down and as the first swing finishes up, change into the second direction used.

Right Side

BA, Right
Up, Right
Down, Right
UpRight, Right

Those above do the same Preanimated Animation but are executed with different first steps.

DownRight, RIght

The famous "Behind The Back" move.

Left Side

DownLeft, Upleft
Left, Upleft

Left side preanimations sort of get shafted in terms of quantity.

Specials were covered in class and will not be written out in description format here.

Finally, I discussed what the Final Exam will entail for next Saturday. It will consist of one duel with me. I will be looking for the students to have the knowledge and be able to use Half Animations, Full Animations, Basic Combos, and Preanimated Movements. Student DO NOT have to win the duel, but demonstrate that they know the subject matter.

Students who've attended 2/3 of the classes or who have come to me and received all the lessons are eligible for the final exam.

List of eligible students for Session 3 Final Exam:
Cobalt
Dathomir

If you have any questions, please seek me or any of my Padawans out. We will be glad to help you out. Good luck and see you Saturday!

You miss it, you miss it, you make it, you make it. It's here on the weekend for you guys, all are welcome, you know how I roll :).

Now that we're done with introductions and I got some free time (thank you TC), here is what we did for Staff Foundation this past Saturday...

Staff Foundation - 3rd Session
Week 1

Attendance:
Tigerclaw
Piccolo
Zuka
Future
Lonewolf
Cobalt
Gameslave

What we covered:
Bringing 2 graduated classes worth plus some new attendees, we had a rockin time!

Half Animations by definition = 1 Press of a Direction + 1 Click/Press of the Attack Button/Key. The result is ONE swing in that direction.

Full Animations by definition = the pressing of the direction and keeping it held while pressing attack and keeping it held as well. The result is the repeat of the same swing over and over with a 'filler' animation in between.

'Filler' Animation by definition = The preanimated/programmed animation that happens in between a Full Animation swing. Each direction out of the 6 Full Animations have their own distinct 'filler' complete with timings and aim.

There are 9 Half Animations Total

Basic Attack (holding still and pressing attack) also known as BA
Up
Down
Those 3 above have the same animation, good for hitting feet from those flying saberists!

Left
Right
Good for hitting exposed sides or following the path of a swing to hit someone in the exposed side.

UpRight
UpLeft

These are offensive in nature and are tough to use as single Half Animations. For Week 2 we'll see them string together to form a Basic Combo

DownRight
DownLeft
More defensive of the swings, respectivly. The DownRight and DownLeft are more for flanking jumpers.

Just a few days and we'll be onto Week 2! See you then!
